Driving manual is so much better. Have you ever tried to peel out or powerslide in an automatic? It's Killer.

I'm a dork. Sticks confuse me or something. I like the automatic shifting.

Ok for normal everyday city driving automatic is way better since in a city you start and stop at lot but outside the city automatics have the problem of sometimes bouncing between 2 gears and it can get annoying if you can't speed up or slow down to stop it also you can do cool stuff like burnsouts with a stick.

My current car is automatic, but I so much prefer manual.

I'm way too lazy to deal with manual.

I don't know how to handle a stick yet. Maybe some day.
EDIT: Don't read any innuendo into the above line, please.
Driving automatic is cheating! Everybody should drive manual and those who can't should be allowed to have a drivers licence!
j/k
...of course*GG* I don't care what ppl use as long as they don't run ppl over :D

Couldn't vote cause I fly to work. I do have 97 Neon and a 3 speed trany on a 1952 Henry J. Very easy to work the clutch. :)

Even though I'm 15, I think automatic would be better for me if I ever drive 'cause I might forget about switching gears. Kinda funny tho, cause when I was 12 I had to show my sister (who was 17 then) how to start a manual... :D

Standard all the way....I recomend everyone learn..even if you don't use it on a regular basis, it's a useful skill.
Sure it's a BIG pain in the ass to get used to, but once you do, you'll apriciate it! =O

Stick drives should never have been invented. Automatic all the way! I will never drive a car that has a stick drive.

Automatic.
I've ridden in manual cars, and I absolutely hated it. It felt so jerky. Knowing how to drive manual is a good thing, but I'm not anxious to learn it any time soon.

It's only jerky when done improperly...
It's one of those things...when i didn't know how, and started learning....I was not happy. The car would stall, it was hard..I didn't like it. Now when I drive Automagic cars, I get really bored when driving in the city...
My left foot keeps feeling for a pedal, my right hand keeps grabbin for a non-existant gearshift...
The only time I miss having an automatic is when I'm trying to eat in the car. =O

erm...improperly in the sense that "properly" is without jerks...it depends on your style...I like the quick jerk of a new gear, but when I'm driving say...my mother, I slow down the gear changes, and smooth it out....
I didn't mean improperly - the car will explode if he drives it like that...

I get what you're saying. It is possible to make the car not feel like that. I feel better.
Maybe I should refrain from car-related polls. I'm 16 years old. The only thing I know about cars is that the gas pedal makes them go.
Red is go. Green is stop.

And the brake pedal stops. A very handy thing to know if you hit another car. I learned the hard way. ;)

Automatic. My Dad tried to get me to drive his stick-shift truck when I was a wee one, but I could never get the vehicle to stop bucking violently when shifting from first to second, and I never made it to third.

I'm already paranoid when I get on the road - trying to remember how to work a stick shift would only make things worse. Might hurt somebody. And even if I wasn't paranoid, I'm still lazy. Then there's the fact that most of my driving takes place in the city, where shifting gears manually would be a huge hassle.
So in short, automatic for me.

Well, I drive automatic, so I like it more then manual, lol. My sis and dad drive manual, so obviously it's pretty cool too. I've driven a few times in their cars, and, though manual is tricky at first, it's pretty nice. But, my sis says that manual is a bit** in heavy traffic because you stop and start ike every other second...that's when automatic is great. It probably also depends on the car. My car, VW Bug GSL, drives like a dream, and has a lot of get up and go to it, and so the automatic works fine with it. It just depends on the person, really!

1. Always shift gears between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm(if you don't like the jerky feeling).
2. Never, EVER, push the clutch and the accelerator at the same time. Only experienced manual drivers know how and when to use this.
3. To stop really quickly (useful sometimes, not always) press the clutch, shift into neutral (the middle section), and press the clutch and brake at the same time.
4. The most important tip is to ALWAYS KNOW WHAT GEAR YOU'RE IN. And know what gear you're shifting to. My friend nearly killed my brother's car by shifting from 2nd to 5th.
Anyone wanna know how to powerslide or to pull a 180? :D

Currently drive an automatic, but much prefer a standard.
I like my automatic, all I have to do is put it in "D" and go! :D And since most of my driving is in the city, a manual would be impratical--I'd wear the clutch out in no time! And since I do most of my own repair work, guess who'd have to pull the transmission?......ME!! No thank you! Although I did have to learn how to drive a manual when I started working, and I can do it fairly well (emphasis on 'fairly'), I still prefer an automatic!

Oh dude, you harsh gotta tell me how! I always wanted to powerslide, but I'm paranoid that I'll blow my car up!
If anyone knows how to do it properly in a manual, please post here or e-mail me! Thanks.

3. To stop really quickly (useful sometimes, not always) press the clutch, shift into neutral (the middle section), and press the clutch and brake at the same time.Just use the brake and then the clutch with brake just before you come to a complete stop. You'll lock your gears up if you throw it into 1st if you haven't waited long enough for the transmission to stop spining.

And since I do most of my own repair work, guess who'd have to pull the transmission?......ME!! I did that a few years ago on my 52' Henry J. because the clutch plate fused together after storing it over one winter. There's nothing like holding a 50lb transmission in mid-air just over your nose when working on the ground.

I agree that having a stick while driving in heavy traffic is a pain. I used to drive a 68 Mustang, and the clutch and stick were very stiff, it would litteraly hurt my foot I used for the clutch pedal after a while.
Automatics are great for when your stopped on a hill. That way you don't roll back when your trying to start driving again.
I drive a 2000 Civic Si and it's a 5 speed stick. God, I have soooo much fun with that thing. For a car like that, I can't imagine having it be an automatic. Where I live, the cops aren't out all that too often so I can get away with speeding on the country roads and I can do all the shifting I want. :) The 180 degree thing is fun to do, but I can't power slide quite yet.

I drive a 5-spd 1995 Honda delSol Si and wouldn't have it any other way... the car is amazing with a 5-spd tranny...
btw, I don't do much powersliding(yes I know how, and there is no "correct" way to do it without future consequences) because I care about my car and the tread on my tires... ;)

I don't know why you guys think you can't power slide or burnout with an automatic. You guys just don't know how to use the emergency brake. (unless your car don't have one or its the type on the ground then you got a excuse.) ;)

Manual. I don't really know why, but they're more fun to drive. Especially once you've mastered the art of eating with one hand, shifting with the other, steering with you're knees, and still being able to hit the pedals. :D
There's just something about a stick, after awhile driving with one becomes a reflex.

You do if you burnout on asphalt.

To burnout you rev then enigine then get it into 1st (note: if your engine is powerful enough you don't even need to rev it before putting it into first) the sudden power to the drive wheels will cause them to spin due to the fact car won't move foward fast enough and the power has got to be spent somewhere. You can do the same thing with a mountain bike by putting it on the lowest gear and having it on slightly slippery surface then quick pedal like mad the rear wheel will spin till it can grip the surface. The reason it is better with manual is it is the clutch (you could slam it from neutral to drive but most automatic transmissions take time to shift) and the fact that with manual it will stay in first during the burnout (unless you shift it) while an automatic could shift up meaning when the wheels actully stop spinning and grip the road it has to shift back down to first wasting time.

Thats Rear Wheel Drive. Front wheel drive you have to pull the brake. If you pull the brake in an automatic rear wheel drive and give it gas you will float to one side.

I voted automatic but why isn't there any choice of something like "I don't care; I just like driving." I can do both so it doesn't matter to me.
