SWEET! Plus we get the Penguin to boot! Yay! :) And I love the Nightwing design.

Is it just me or is Superman shedding a tear?

WOW! Both sketches look great, but I really like Nightwing's design! Way to go Mr. Delaney! If Nightwing ever makes some form of appearance in "Justice League," I hope he looks like that.

Oh, and I can't forget to comment on the Superman sketch. Great job Mr. Delaney. It shows that you put a lot of effort into that sketch. Thanks!

Heh...I liked how Penguin was worked in there...I wonder how "The Penguin" will like it :D

Both of them are cool, but I really like the Superman, between both the lighting and the blank look on his face.

I love the Nightwing design too, and having the Penguin in there is an added treat. The Superman one is awesome, nice depiction. There's just something noble about it. :)

The Nightwing spicture is great and I'm sure that the penguin will love it... ;)

But that Superman. How moving. I literaly gasped when I saw this picture. So beautiful and so moving. The shading is perfect and the layout is great.

John, not only are you a super nice guy for putting in the effort, both those drawings are really good. Superman's tribute is monumental, and your Nightwing is a definite improvement over the TNBA design. I've always wanted to slug that fat bird.

Hey John, great pics, as usual....unfortuneatly, Uncle..from Jackie Chan Adventures was visiting when I saw the pics..and well, I don't think he's a fan =[

Here's a transcript of the conversation..

Uncle: NICKIE!!! (My name's nick btw)
Me: Oh, hey Uncle.
Uncle: What are you doing? It is too cold in this TV Station of yours! You want Uncle to catch cold?
Me: Yeah, I know it's cold, but the electronics.....
Uncle: One More thing, what is that you're looking at? Those drawings are TERRIBLE!
Me: Uncle, those are sketches by artist John Delaney. I think they are very good, as do alot of people.
*Thwack*
Uncle: They are TERRIBLE! Look, man in Black is all out of proportion! He looks funny! One More thing, why is he in his Pajamas!?
Me: That's Nightwing, he's a superhero...he's beating up the Penguin...it's stylistic.
Uncle: One more thing, penguin man is Too Fat!
Me: He's supposed to be fat...look, what about the sketch of Superman, you know who Superman is, right?
*Thwack*
Uncle: Of course Uncle knows who Superman is...Sketch is not as bad as 1st, but still is no good!
Me: What are you talking about? I'm no Superman fan, but even I think it's a good sketch!
Uncle: North America is all wrong! Looks like Jade drew it! One more thing, if Sun is shining to the left of Superman, why is the Earth fully lit? It's Sloppy!
Me: I think you're nitpicking!
*Thwack*
Uncle: Do not Mock Uncle!
Jade: Hey Uncle, Nick, ooh...Cool pics! Who drew them?

Eh, there's no pleaseing some people...but I'm happy....and Jade wants me to E-Mail harley to get Jackie added...*sigh*

Yay! No mullet! :) I'm glad this design worked out and I hope Penguin feels happy that his fav. character finally made it to a sketch. Although I wanted a solo pic of Nighwing with this design, it's still great, and I hope we'll get more beautiful sketches like this and Superman. By the way, that Supes pic is a real cool pic and it's sad we have to see one of his books go. :(

Maybe if they had art like THIS in the book it wouldn't be going anywhere... ;) I always thought the art in Superman Advs. was too detailed for the animated style... just didn't feel right.

You gotta love a guy who putsup with a bunch of whiney fanboiys like us and delievers the best art I've ever seen. This is what was lacking in Superman Adventures and what IS lacking in Gotham Adventures. These are spectacular peices of work John. I'm just surprised that you continue to put so much work into these for us. Thank you very much!

Thanks, John. Your work is so beautiful, and you're so generous with it.

John,

Once again, very cool stuff. I'm especially glad to get Supes. Definitely the best sketch yet.

And the inclusion of Penguin is great- very on-model!

Later,

P.S. Just thinking out loud here, but.... Is it me, or does Nightwing's hair look very similar to Terry's in Batman Beyond? Face seems a bit similar too....

Now THIS is what I had in mind when I put in a request for the comic design over the TNBA look. It's simply spectacular, and a nice looking P. N. Gwynn ( :p ) to boot. And that Superman pic is right on the money, too. Many thanks, John!

WOW, WOW and WOW again! Thanks for the incredible drawings John, being a huge Superman fan I would say that the Superman tribute piece is truly incredible. I also loved the Nightwing piece. Thanks again for all of the amazing art you give us every week John!

I am stunned almost beyond words.

When I first thought of a Superman Adventures tribute image, I didn't dare to hope for something quite so grand...or anything at all. How could I have ever doubted that not only would you pay homage to Superman, you would honor his very name with your talent, care and love. I felt rather selfish after mentionning a tribute image here on these boards, and then rather dumb when Terminatah informed me that I missed the fact that you had agreed to draw an image of Supes for us as well, so I want you to know that if you ever feel we are asking too much of you...please feel free to let us know. Instead of complaining about us or our consistant whining, though, you gave us an image to treasure forever.

Let me tell you, I came into school at 7:30 today, blew my nose in the washroom, only to find it bleeding...rather badly! I spent over an hour hovering over that toilet, pinching the bridge of my nose as I missed my first class. By the end of the whole affair, I had been hunched over for close to two and a half hours - let me say that was definately not fun! What's my point? :p I'm getting there!

Seeing that image on my computer screen did so much more than put a small smile on my face...it showed me that you care..truly care..not only about us, the fans, but about the legends that you draw and they beauty of your art. I am currently studying Fine Arts, and am only beginning to learn about the great masters...but please let me tell you, today more than ever before...

You are an artist to me

I thank you, appreciate you, look up to you, and share in the depth of the emotions which you brought to that image of the Man of Steel...his heart broke...and mine did too!

And Nightwing looks great! Thank you for making The Penguin so happy! Have a wonderful day!

Hey Everybody
I'm just floored by all your wonderful words of encouragement. When I was growing up, reading comics I always wanted a chance to connect with the people creating these amazing works. But the technology then didn't permit it (outside of the occasional letter column) now with incredible sites like Toonzone we all get that chance and I for one couldn't be happier.
I'm so glad everyone ( well almost everyone, eh Uncle?) ;) liked the design of Nightwing. I tried to take the things I liked best about his various costume designs and streamline them into a animatable JL style design. I too did not like the mullet but I did really like the BT bird design on his chest and the more bird-like nose guard on his mask. As was mentioned, I was definately influenced by Terry's hairstyle from Batman Beyond.
I'm so glad that the Superman piece connected emotionally with many of you. I love that character too, and it's always an honor to draw him. I just hope I did him justice(pardon the pun).
Oh, and Penguin,it just didn't look like Oswald was ever going to get in so that one's for you buddy
Cheers kats and thanks2

Thanks so much John :) It really meant a lot to me.

Maybe next week. ;)

I knew it! The similarities between Dick's hair and Terry's just had to be on purpose.. I have to admit, I still prefer the TNBA design overall, but yours is cool for a change. In animation, though, he'd almost *have* to lose the extraneous glove lines, but you did a good job combining everyone's wishes into one sketch, John.

And did I mention that the Superman sketch was amazing? Well, just in case... That Superman sketch was amazing!!! :) Thanks for the generous effort, too.

Can't wait for next week, John!

Great, Great, Great Work !!!

The Nightwing design is FANTASTIC. I don't know... The TNBA hairstyle never really bothered me, and a ponytail would have been cool with this design, too- but obviously not necessary...
He looks great. The Penguin does, too- and I'm glad that our friend The Penguin FINALLY got his drawing.

The Superman is just... ... ...BREATH-TAKING !!!!!
Just Amazing... Stunning... Awesome. Definitely my 2nd favorite so far (the first one of the JL Batman being number one - What can I say... Batman's my favorite, and that drawing rocked !!)

This is so cool, to be able to communicate with John like this,
and to have him absolutely STUN us every time with his work.
As I have said before, we are really getting spoiled...

Thank You, John Delaney, for being an artiste (and yes, I MEANT artiste with an "e") extraordinaire, and a first class guy to boot...

Hi there, I'm new posting here. Long time lurker though :)

Mr Delaney I just had to come out of my lurk mode to say how wonderful your sketches have been. They have just been so great! I only wish Gotham Adventures had art like that. I really enjoyed the art you did in JLAdv #3, very nice! I could sit here and tell you my favourite panels but hey - they were all outstanding :D

Can't wait to see more from you!

Over on the Drawing Board, Batkid had asked me to draw Batman and Nightwing fighting side by side in animated style, but with their current comic book costumes. Once again, I'm no John Delaney, but here it is:

http://members.aol.com/dominousa/images/batmannightwingcolor.jpg

As you can probably see, I used the Greg Land version of the Nightwing costume.

John Delaney

Nice job Domino! Not to nitpick, I may be wrong here but I think Scott McDaniel designed the Nightwing costume.
Good stuff!

I'd heard that it was Brian Stelfreeze who designed it, but it's been drawn differently by the different artists on the book over time. My version is the Greg Land version with the less pronounced compartments on the boots and gloves. I was using a page from Nightwing #52 that I own as reference. That's all I meant! And thanks!

Hey Domino
I think you're right. I seem to recall that Brian Stelfreeze designed it as well.
Thanks
