Help with Game Identification

I need help identifying an old NES game I used to play and it's been bugging me that I can't remember for the life of me what's it called.

I know for sure that it involved a lion (who was white or tanish). I think it was Action-RPG-like, in a similar vein to zelda, where you would travel wide fields between towns/castles.

I want to say there was random battles as well, since I think battle screens came up randomly (or perhaps when you hit an enemy. I'm almost positive a seperate menu came up when you were fighting).

Any help or hints as to what this game is would be appreciated. :)
