Hey Gang,
Editor Joan Hilty recently sent me the first batch of pages for Gotham Girls (okay, they were copies, but still). I gotta tell you, Jennifer Graves is doing a terrific job! You're gonna love it.

I'd just like to say how incredibly cool it is for a creator to pop in with an update like that.
Thank you, Mr. Storrie.
Oh, and Batgirl Adventures #1 by Dini and Burchett is one of my top 5 favorite comics of all time- so, as you can imagine, I'm looking forward to Gotham Girls with great anticipation.

Sorry, Doc. No Zatanna this time around. Maybe, if sales are good, we can do another Gotham Girls series and include some of the other fine ladies who deserve their time in the spotlight.

Just an FYI - Paul Dini will be writing a ZATANNA series (either a 12 ish mini-series or ongoing) for VERTIGOR sometime in mid/late 2002.
So Paul, what character are you enjoying the most in the mini-series?

I'm both anticipating and nervous about that series. Not that I don't have complete faith in Paul Dini (he's earned it), it's just that I don't know why (almost) every series with a magic angle has to be Vertigo these days.
So Paul, what character are you enjoying the most in the mini-series?
Tough one to answer! Babs is a longtime fave of mine, so writing her is a blast. I think my favorite issue is going to be #4, featuring Renee Montoya. Has a real "cop show" / PI feel to it and I'm a big buff of hard-boiled mystery.

So the Montoya ish will definatly be like P.O.V.? Woo-Hoo! I really, really enjoy stories with that angle, which is why I am really anticipating Gotham Central. Coolness...can't wait!
And I asgree about the Zatanna thing. It could be the most tame book DC has eve done, but they'll still put it under the VERTIGO banner. I know it'll be good and all, but by the VERTIGO banner? I see no reason why it won't fit in the regular DC Universe.

Y'know how PI novels tend to be told in the first person?

Who knows? Maybe Mr. D is planning to do a "mature audiences" kind of tale?

Well, mostly I get the inside stuff because I'm the writer on the upcoming mini-series!
Not sure exactly when Gotham Girls will debut, but I'm pretty sure it'll be out sometime this summer.

Don't think you'll have a problem selling this one, Paul. It'd be awesome if this became a regular series, another animated book :) And the cast of characters could go on and on... Batgirl, Montoya, Zatanna, Harley, Ivy, Catwoman, Roxy, Calendar Girl maybe a Black Canary appearance, or Supergirl, Livewire, Volcana, or Lois? Even Baby Doll...That would kick so much a**....

Paul, (I can call you Paul right?) I'm not really worried about the story in Gotham Gals, but since I know very little about Jennifer Graves' work, and also because so few artists lately seem able to accurately draw in the animated style, I would like you do me a favor and make any kind of comparison between her work and other animated artist of today, just to give me an idea of what to expect. Don't worry, I've bought all the Batman Adventures related comics, even if I didn't particulairly enjoy the art, as I am sure everyone else here has too! I am sorry for asking you to make comparisons because as someone who is also trying to become an artist, me, I hate being compared to other people. None the less, just to give me an idea...
Who's art does her animated style seem most similar too?
Burchett? Delaney? Rousseau? Timm? Templeton? Levins?
Thanks bunches man!

DB,
Yup, you can call me Paul.
Hard to compare Jennifer's work to any other specific "Animated Style" artist but I can tell you from the notes on the pages that she's keeping a close eye on Mad Love as she draws (as I did when I wrote). That being the case, I think you'll notice a few Timm-ish influences.
Best thing I can say to put your mind at ease is to reiterate -- THIS STUFF IS GOOD!

Well, as I've been saying -- it's a little early to worry about who's in Gotham Girls II. For now we're concentrating on getting Gotham Girls done and done well. The only way a follow up would ever happen is if the first mini sells extrememely well, so make sure to tell all your friends and relatives to buy Gotham Girls!

I may have stated this before, but the reason why I have so much confidence in this project is becuase Paul has done research and went out of the way to get this project going. Not too many creators will do this. Some are just slapped onto a title. He went out of his way to do this title. That...I like.

Jim,
I appreciate your vote of confidence. Truthfully, though, I bet you'd be surprised just how many comics writers are out there doing the research and pitching series. I just got lucky and pitched this one to the right folks at the right time.
That said, as you have pointed out, I am very jazzed about Gotham Girls on a personal level and I hope that comes across on the printed page.

I think it will. While alot of artists/writers put alot of research into titles, sometimes they don't mesh. An example of ths could be JMS's current run on Amazing Spider-Man. Yeah - he's doing a bang-up job (amazing reall y-- no pun intended), but he's been making some big continuity errors. Personally, the great writing and art allows me to overlook his flub-ups now and again on ASM. It's rare to find the perfect match for a project. I think this could be it. The title where all the peices fall into place properly. I'm really looking forward to this, moreso than the next BGA issue. If a creator is personally jazzed about a title they are working on, it'll show on the book. That's why I think this book will be flawless.
BTW - Is Jennifer doing the covers, too, or will there be another artist. I'd like to see Darwyn Cooke do the cover art. After y'all see the cover to B:GA #50 - you'll see what I mean.

The series runs five issues. There's a single story running through them, with all the Gotham Girls involved, but each issue gives one of our heroines / villainesses her own time in the spotlight.
Issue one focuses on Catwoman. Issue two is Poison Ivy's time to shine. The third showcases Harley Quinn. The fourth is from Det. Renee Montoya's point of view (she isn't part of the webtoons but she was created for the Animated Series and the people doing Batman comics at the time liked her enough to include her right away). The last issue features Batgirl.
