I've just watched MOTP again. And it reminded me to do something I've put off for a while. to ask you guys a question. Anyone know how she does her disappearing tricks?

You know, that's quite an interesting question! I'd just assumed that she had a few magician's tricks up her sleeve. I mean, she always used that smoke thing to maker her entrances and exists. I mean, the smoke didn't clear for a few seconds, and if you're very skilled, you can probably dash off or hide somewhere quite fast. And then of course, there's the fact that it's a cartoon, and the animators can have her do things that perhaps would be quite hard to do in reality...too bad to, it looks awesome!

Yeah, I always had wondered how she did it, and assumed it was due to some tricks she knew...but at then end when she disappeared with the Joker...there was NO way she couldv'e escaped with him. And what ever happened to Joker after that?

Why does there need to be an explination? The whole reason behind her smoke thing was to add to the Phantasm character, in terms of its appearence, mystery, etc. I just don' think it matters, I mean, it's just a cartoon.

Besides, if you watch, there aren't many situations that would be impossible to pull off in real life...

In the comic-book sequel to MOTP they show that at the end of the movie she just disappears into the sewer system - I'm sure its the same sort of tricks she uses in MOTP.

If I recall correctly, she vanished into thin air two feet in front of batman, two seconds before a police helicopter showed up over the edge of the building they were fighting on. The only way she could have beat it in that time would've been to jump off the edge-right into the helicopter blades!

Well you never know. Maybe Batman was looking at the helicoptor and the helicoptor was looking at Batman and the Phantasm jumped off the other ledge or something.

Come to think of it, Batman does his fair amount of "disapearing" in B:TAS. Not with smoke into thin air, but like when no one's looking. The smoke is a diversion.

I just think she's sneaky. Besides, it doesn't matter! :)

Hmm Maybe you're right. I just figured there some hard core explaination for it.

If she disappeared with the joker and he's still alive, then she's probably alive too.

At the very end of the movie we see her on a cruise ship - so she's very much alive.

What are you, kidding me? This is the single greatest Batman movie of all time, and you haven't seen it? That's disgraceful. Don't show your face on the boards again until you go see it! ;)

I think smoke is a distraction. It would be easy for her to just jump away or jump down or where-ever with a huge smoke cloud surrounding her. It's a nifty trick, too. I like it becuase it's add to the mysterious nature of Phantasm.

Congrats! It'll be the best Bats-related purchase you've ever made. :p

Although... I hope we're not hyping MOTP too much. :)

I'm glad you guys are enjoying this thread. :) You should really see it Gyro. Anyways, its a little off topic, still has to do with MOTP, and who cares? It's my thread. :p How did Batman get his name cleared? I dont think it was explained in the movie, and if anyone knows tell me.

How did Batman get his name cleared?

I think that's a very good question. They really don't explain it at all. Maybe Arthur told everyone the truth in exchange for Batman not turning him over... Batman doesn't seem like the bartering type.

Who knows! :)

I think you guys are underestimating her powers - she can do more than disappear. At one point she is running as fast as the Batplane., and in the cemetary, doesn't one the gansters throw something at her, and it passes right through her?

BTW - you're all right. This is far and away the best Batman movie ever made.

What was the comic book sequel called? What happened in it?

I don't think she's running with the Batwing as much as the perspective makes it seem. I think she was just running really fast, but if anything, the 'Wing was matching her slower speed.

And if you look carefully at the scene in the graveyard, when Buzz Bronsky throws the pick at her, there is a little movement of her sillouette inside the smoke. I think it was to intentionally drop a clue to the viewer that the Phantasm was not a "ghost" or anything. She actually had to dodge the pick.

That's just my take on it, though.

It's the Batman & Robin Adventures Annual #1.

Here's a nifty image of the cover, compliments of this site:

I JUST REMEMBERED SOMETHING!!! In the very beginning of the movie, Chuckie Sol takes out a gun and shoots at her. She doesn't even move, and the smoke just covers her legs! And she didn't even budge. Sure she could have a bullet proof vest, but remember she didn't have one when she took the top part of her coustume off when Joker figured it out. Now I dare you guys to explain that, because I have no idea.

Maybe the part of her costume that she took off was the bulletproof part.

Or maybe Chuckie Sol is just a really bad shot. Batman gets shot at all the the time in the show, and never gets hit - Gotham villians seem to have terrible aim.

lol. Too true. :D

I'm actually writing a sequel entitled No Way Out: Return of the Phantasm. Despite the shameless plug (even if you don't read mine, visit the FanFic boards, there's some great stuff there) I encourage you to check it out. :)

Hey, that's awesome, thanks for feeding my addiction to this movie. :D

As for the batman's good name, the only person he really needed to convince was Jim Gordon. Harvey really fubared his attempt to catch Batman, and he probably got into a lot of hot water for it, with Jim and the mayor. So, what if bats just showed up in Gordon's office with photos and an explanation, and Gordon decided to ignore any more of Bullocks bright ideas.(I doubt the mayor would be too receptive to him either, that's twice he's gone after batman gung ho and messed it up).
Anyway, my two cents.

"Chuckie Sol takes out a gun and shoots at her. She doesn't even move, and the smoke just covers her legs! And she didn't even budge."

Well, not to mention that Buzz Bronski hurdle’s an axe handle at the Phantasm that either goes through her or disintegrates on impact.

So my explanation is this, we can assume that the mist that comes off of the Phantasm is something much more than smoke, as Bruce Wayne states: "it’s some kind of dense long-change macromolecular polymer adapt-o-genic..."

Granted whatever compound is coming out of her suit is extremely durable and adapts extremely quickly to it’s principles and surroundings. Meaning not only does the mist act as a counterpart for shadows, by employing psychology to confuse the victims but as well irritates the person(s) eyes, dubbing as an illusion.

So when Chuckie Sol is franticly shooting at the Phantasm he’s shooting at something that isn’t particularly there, and when the Phantasm approaches closer to him the chemicals in the mist become more potent and after she slices the gun, he finishes squinting from the irritation and she’s gone.

Basically there’s a little summery in that makes everything plausible which comes from an abundant about of conversations with friends.

I’d say that it’s pretty likely that the writers had something planed for all the physics of the Phantasm. But they’re always forced into cutting everything that doesn’t further the plot.

Or maybe they didn't. But I’m sure they wish they did now, being that the most common query or complaint.

Hopefully one day, there will be a special edition dvd commentary to explain.

Hee hee hee. Just a tip Dent, you can hit the "reply" button to a post instead of copying, paste, and adding quotation marks around it. I just watched it again, showing how much of a fan, or addict I am. I heard Andrea was voiced by the same actress (her named slipped my mind) as Lois on STAS. So as I watched it, I noticed how similar the voices were.
