For a while, it was unconfirmed by any major media outlet but the L.A. Times now says CBS/Letterman issued a statement saying it to be true.

I remember when Letterman did a fake "tribute" to him that ended with him coming out and saying "I'm not dead, ya bastard!" But I guess we all have to go some time.

He did an episode of Pee-Wee's Playhouse. As well as the 1-800-COLLECT ads.
