From the creator of Rave Master comes Fairy Tail. Fairy Tail follows the adventures of a boy named Natsu and and girl named Lucy who are part of the most infamous magic guild in the world called Fairy Tail. What you may notice when first glancing at Fairy Tail is the art style is very oda-ish. Not only the art style but the theme of Nakama is also very strong in this series. You’d think Oda was really behind this while Hiro Mashima is taking the credit. But really Fairy Tail is really good and worth checking out. While there’s a lot of characters running around in the guild lets meet the main cast thus far.

I just started reading this recently(got interested after you mentioned it to me).
It seems pretty good so far. I've only read a few chapters so far, but I'm definitely enjoying what I've read.
And yeah, very One Piece-esque designs.
It's very "meh". There's just nothing that pulls you in.

Oda-ish is right, one look at Natsu and I was thinking of Luffy.
Might be good, though. If its a newer comic it could hit its stride and do well. I guess if its good, we'll know when they decide to make a TV series out of it.

I've always thought that Hiro and Oda had very similar art-styles. Not only that but the worlds they create and the stories and characters that inhabit them are seem to share many sensibilities. "One Piece" and "Rave" were introduced to me at around the same time, and before I learned more about them I almost thought those two series could be from the same creator.

Looks interesting enough. Is it just a manga series right now? No anime?

The manga just started last August. Typically a manga series takes between 2-3 years before it becomes an anime, with some taking longer. (Okay, Hunter x Hunter only took 1 year, but that type of situation is rare).

No, it runs in Weekly Shounen Magazine.
Still, Viz might have some interest in the future, but they aren't connected to Magazine like they are to Jump or Sunday, which is probably the biggest reason we haven't seen the Hajime no Ippo manga brought over yet.

Me thinks we''ll see Tokyopop picking this one up, and if this series has already caught on and become popular we'll see an anime adaption in two years.

Personally, Fairy Tail has Del Rey written all over it, as Del Rey has become the unofficial American publisher for Shounen Weekly titles in recent years.

Then someone better tell them to bring over my damn Hajime no Ippo! Seriously, how can one of the longest running shounen manga of all time, which has a decent following already, be unlicensed even after 18 years?

The one thing I like is how Lucy has to actualy negociate to her summons in regards of when to call them.
That and she has Plue as a summon.

Ippo doesn't require culture jokes. Kochikame does. (I wouldn't expect anything less from the "Japanese Homer Simpson.")

Didn't stop manga like Dr. Slump from getting licensed. By the way, I thought Kochikame more resembled Fred Flintstone with a unibrow.

No, he is more Homer Simpson than Fred Flintstone.

Like how? Does he strangle kids who make fun of him?
Oh, so he has a logical reason for being in the series.
No, not really. It's explained as a summon, but it's a pretty clear example of him being forced into the series for no real reason. (so far, all he's done is hung out in Lucy's home between arcs)

Well, I've been checking out the first 36 chapters available of this series and I have to say, I'm quite impressed. :)
Yeah, the Shonen cliches are as clear as day but it doesn't make the manga any less fun. In fact, as the story progresses, we get to see some background stories on each of the guild members which really helps flesh out the story.
That said, I'm really liking the cast, especially Erza. ;) The manga balances action, comedy, drama, and fanservice nicely and still keeps one eager to read the next chapter after they're done the current one.
When an anime series of this gets made, I'll definitely be checking it out. I think this could be Hiro Mashima's best work yet. :)

Wow, this topic hasn't been updated in a while. Considered there was a big non-stop battle arc just a while ago, you'd think there would be at least some posts. Anyway, after a dramatic story with Loki, that ends with him becoming Lucy's newest summon, we enter a new story arc that apparently revolves around Erza.
And we see one of the most awesome character designs ever.

I love Fairy Tail and I really like how since that showdown with the other guild You see Jubia continuing to stalk Gray ever since they fought. lol
Jubia is full of win :D
I was surprised in the latest chapter that Ezra is in an actually bikini and not that armor bikini from the omakes ;)
Heh, Mashima has always had a knack for wacky characters.
Almost forgot about this series. They're releasing the first two volumes in America late next month. I'm going to go through Rave Master before picking this series up, personally. Got enough on my plate just reading that.

Chapter 77 was quite interesting, especially the twist at the end.
So, clone, evil twin, or long lost brother? Taking all bets!
Although taking Rave into consideration, time travel is another possibility.

Chapter 79 is out. Here, we learn that the Mage Council has a secret weapon called Satellite Square that can use the Etherion. Etherion? Now where have I heard that before? <_<
It's still a bit too early, but this can be taken as further proof that this and Rave share the same universe.

I went to a Borders for lunch break and read some of the comic. I made it through the first short story where Natsu and Lucy meet and such, and I was quite entertained. I don't collect a lot of manga (just Fruits Basket and Tsubasa and xxxHolic right now) but I got volumes 1 and 2 on the spot, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest.

From what I hear, the translation is good, but they use honorifics, which just plain don't fit in the Fairy Tail universe, IMO.
Also, the following romanizations for disputed character names are confirmed:
Sieglein = Siegrain
Erza = Erza
GWOtaku
03-27-2008, 05:51 PM
Well the translation is done by Del-Rey, and they've always done high quality work. Including and explaining honorifics is standard practice for them, and they also explain cultural references in the back. If you ask me they're quite fan and reader friendly, which is part of why I like supporting their stuff.

So yeah, I really enjoyed the first two Del Rey volumes. Its the same quality as any other manga from the publisher, and Omakes and author notes are indeed included. I really like how a lot seems to happen every chapter, when I read the comic I don't ever feel like I'm wasting time on tedious filler.
Its kind of ironic, I hated Rave Master (the anime, anyway) but this new story from the writer appeals to me. The guild system is rather interesting and Fairy Tail itself is a fun concept, although One Piece is king when it comes to the whole theme of a group of free spirits coming together to realize their dreams. Still, its cool how there's some command structure in place even as the guild members seem usually free to do what they want.
I'll also back off of my Natsu/Luffy comparison somewhat, although Natsu looks WAY too similar when he's got that toothy grin. Other than that, no problem. I see some of Luffy's qualities in him insofar as his ability to be totally carefree at one moment and serious the next, but he's not nearly as extreme and he doesn't act stupid and his motivations are very different. So, no big problems there.
I was worried Happy would just be a stupid mascot, but he's actually involved in some funny gags. Likewise I was worried Lucy was there for fanservice, but so far it almost seems as though she's the de facto protagonist. Other characters take prominence but we're seeing everything through her eyes, which is cool.
No real opinion on Gray yet, although Ezra's pretty cool. Hopefully the whole joke with Natsu and Gray trying to fake being great friends whenever she's around doesn't get beaten into the ground.
So yeah, its good. I see myself collecting this one, although once again I've chosen a manga that will require months of waiting for volumes down the line. Ah well, quality is worth it eh?

New chapter is out, and not only does the "Siegrain = Jeral" theory get more support (though it's possible they just have a one-way psychic connection and Siegrain is unknowingly falling into a trap), but two enemies get turned to the good side. The battle with Jeral better be epic enough to make up for two or possibly more no-show fights.

84 is out, and the remaining enemies are pretty much one-shotted once Natsu gets the chance to attack. What a shame, I was expecting more from the square guy. In addition, at the end, three more new enemies come out of nowhere, and seem to be a strike force called Trinity Skull from some Assassin Guild called the Order of the Skull. Well, at least they look interesting. They remind me of the King's guards in Rave Master; they came out of nowhere the same way.
