With the successful release of "300" and the upcoming release of "TMNT" later this month, there is no doubt that Warner Bros. is enthused about comic book adaptations -just not DC's for 2007. So how about next year?
This is an image from the upcoming Captain Marvel cartoon for WB.

2008 is going to be all Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel. DC will be pushing the character with the animated series and toys. Mary Marvel will have a starring role in "Countdown." The Jeff Smith series will get a huge promotional push when it's collected, and is just the first of a number of Captain Marvel projects with large appeal. Warner believes it can create a movie franchise based on the character, but in order to do so, they've got to get people talking the character up...
Shame they can never actually use the name of the character in projects, or the advertising of such...

Can't wait. glad there also bringing mary marvel in with him

This should be great... if it's done right.

I've always thought Capt. Marvel/Shazam! could have enormous appeal to a new audience today if handled correctly. I think it could be particularly successful as a movie franchise.

It's like Harry Potter meets Superman. What's not for kids to love?

Just be aware that this is Rich Johnston we're talking about and "Lying in the Gutters" is a RUMORS column. This may be true, but he's been wrong before.

Is that a Ben Caldwell drawing...? His unused Legion designs were amazing, glad to see he got his own show!

This actually struck me as a Sean "Cheeks" Galloway drawing. He's the character designer for the Hellboy Animated films. I really hope Caldwell gets a crack at designing an animated series some day though...

Thought it looked good until I saw the flowers on the cape.

Thought it looked good until I saw the flowers on the cape.

They are (or are supposed to be, at least) gold threads along the edge of the cape (as seen here (http://static.flickr.com/31/44929208_7f405d1701_o.jpg)). They were omitted from the good Captain's DCAU design (seen here (http://worldsfinestonline.com/WF/jlu/episodes/clash/17.jpg)) for the same reason, I imagine, the gold "S" shield was omitted from the back of animated Superman's cape; emblems and small details on a cape are hell to animate.

I'm sure whoever drew the particular piece of art displayed at the outset of this thread is aware of this and simply chose to simply the gold threads into an arranged pattern for the sake of simplifying the animation.

This is fake. The guy who drew that art, Jim Zubkavich, posts on another forum I visit, and did it for fun. His other work includes Makeshift Miracle (http://www.makeshiftmiracle.com). Whoever started this rumor removed his signature from the art and replaced it with the logo.

The flowers totally gave him away.

thats an awesome artwork! the rendering of capt marvel was perfect. it was cutesy (and that aint bad imo) and seemed to be influenced by certain anime shows. too bad it was a hoax. i was getting kinda excited for the potential shazam series. whoever this guy is he can give professional animators from the dcau team a run for their money!

Posted on DeviantArt a few days ago. That's probably where they (ie. some fan with photoshop) got the image. In his journal, Jim acknowledges that the drawing had nothing to do with a new series.
