View Full Version : Toon Zone Talkback - "Captain N": The Greatest Video Game Cartoon Ever
This is the talkback thread for "Captain N": The Greatest Video Game Cartoon Ever (http://news.toonzone.net/article.php?ID=16009).
You know, I would suggest making a new Captain N, but then it'd just be focusing on newer games, and thus it wouldn't be as fun. Maybe a Smash Bros. cartoon...

If this is a reference to my Captain N Rant (http://www.forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=136427&highlight=Captain+N) then I am not immused.

I fail to see the correlation :D

Acutally, I had completely forgotten all about that rant until you linked to it just now.
I didn't think up the splash until I saw the Season 2 OP and saw GameBoy.
Duke, everyone knows the SF II anime movie > Captain N.
Oh, and MEGAMAN IS NOT GREEN.

What episodes are the Zelda Team-Ups?

Eh, I never really liked the Street Fighter anime. Never appealed to me.
What episodes are the Zelda Team-Ups?
"Quest for the Potion of Power," where Link pulls a leg muscle and is jealous of Kevin's skills, "Once Upon a Time Machine," where Kevin & Link travel through time chasing cats who have stolen Kevin's Power Pad, "Having a Ball," where King Hippo & Eggplant Wizard steal the Triforce of Power & Courage, and "The Trojan Dragon," where Link & Zelda cameo to help make a dragon mech for the N-Team.

Currently checking out Season 2 of Captain N, it starts off with them getting the Game Boy...

CORRECTION: "Captain N" first aired in 1989, not 1988. Both "Captain N" and "Super Show" premiered at the same time.

I don't think I ever saw this one. Was it made for the season with the different animation studio?

Well it was definitely better animation wise. The first fight in that movie between Sagat and Ryu probably had a higher budget than the entirety of Captain N put together. (It didn't hurt that they had Andy Hug doing the fight choreography)
No way something like this would be possible today. WAY too many licenses and issues.

Well, obviously it wouldn't feature 3rd party licenses like MegaMan and Simon, but if it only included 1st party titles it could work.
'Course, it'd be a Smash Bros. cartoon instead of a Captain N cartoon.
Something about Captain N rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it's the fact they made Megaman green. Or that they call Pit "Kid Icarus." Or that they made King Hippo blue. Or that they made Simon Belmont like... that. Or that sassy "aw hell naw" voice they gave Mother Brain.

And I'd love a Smash Bros. cartoon to death.
They could go about it as a tournament series or they could do a Justice League-esque series with the heroes banding together to stop villians from the various worlds.

In your article, you forgot to mention which character Levi Stubbs plays. For the educated masses who watched the cartoon, they would get it but to those who aren't, they wouldn't.
I also know that people are saying "Gameboy" caused the series to jump the shark but I don't think he really made too much of an impact in the show to actually derail it from the standard Captain N fare. He was more of a background character of the team who was brought in to help every now and then. He stopped being a spotlight whore after the first couple of episodes of the second season. Besides, the second season had some really good episodes such as "Quest for the Potion of Power" and "Having a Ball" so in that way, I'd say the second season was better.
By the way, is Levi Stubbs Jr. still alive?
One more thing, if NBC didn't cancel its Saturday morning block, do you think Captain N would've got a fourth season? :)

Anybody else used to dress up as Captain N?
I couldn't afford the letterman jacket as a kid, but I have one now.
...
No, I don't wear it and pretend I'm Captain N.

They'd better be in it. I mean, they're the Batman and Superman of Nintendo
In fact, there'd be more chance of them making the roster than Snake or Fire Emblem characters.
But as for Capt N, I've watched a few clips recently, and I just don't think I could sit through this show now. So many weird cartoon physics like breathing in space, spaceships without protective covers, etc. Then Kevin keeps pressing his magic "Select" button to solve the most ridiculous problems (How does it help him paint an entire wall at top-speed?) It all just weighs too heavily on my tolerance of 80s cartoons.
Guess I'm too based in modern cartoon physics nowadays, where the only things weird are random super-deformed faces that are supposed to make you laugh :(

He used the Turbo button to make himself go really fast.

Captain N is such a dork, though. It's hard to get around how dorky he is. I bet he made a lot of kids give up videogames, start smoking pot and dressing in cool clothes, because they were convinced that if they were anything like Captain N they would die without ever getting laid.
Actually, I would think most 7-year-olds in the late 80's, early 90's would think Captain N was cool because he could travel inside video games. I kind of doubt kids in those days actually cared about sex at that age.

Which was why only Pit/Kid Icarus and Samus were the only ones to make the cut for the comic book version. Any reason they didn't include Little Mac for the comic book N-Team? I mean because he did appear in the first panel in the "Welcome to Videoland" (Where he's shown Punching-Out King Hippo).

Kevin useing his control pad was the main thing I like about him. That zapper was pretty cool too. And Mario and Link being the world finest is why I think they would not be apart of the show. Big N would want big time money for them or would tell whoever making the new show that those 2 char are off limit.

You're not going to get mega ratings for a Smash Bros. cartoon without Mario & Link. Then it'd be similar to that horrible Avengers cartoon where they couldn't use Captain America, Thor, or Iron Man.

At least it was better than the mario cartoons. Super show was just an endless run of movie parodies, combined with campy live action stuff with endless guest stars (magic johnson, cyndi lauper, roddy piper, sgt. slaughter, ernie hudson, inspector gadget, etc), and i dont know WHAT "club mario" was supposed to be. To be fair, SMBSS at least had an actual Italian playing mario (lou albano), and SMB3 was much better written (did they use the actual koopa kid names or not? I doubt they could get away with morton koopa jr, but iggy, lemmy, and wendy o , which were references to punk/metal singers, might have slipped through). However, SMW was simply mario and friends doing tired stone age gags, the less said the better.
