View Full Version : The tiniest of suggestions for [adultswim]

Now, this is just a suggestion. I don't want a hundred and one flames because it sounds stupid but I think it should be said because it may or may not be helpful.
I go to a lot of anime clubs and conventions and I noticed that a lot of anime fans are girls. And one of the main certain anime like Inu-Yasha are popular is because it has something that appeals to girls, mainly the romance element. Well, I like action anime as much as the next person but I think one of the main reason why anime isn't doing so good on [adultswim] is because all it shows is mostly action. I think, for a change, maybe if a little shoujo or girl-oriented anime like Paradise Kiss, Kare Kano, Fruits Basket, Revolutionary Girl Utena, or Azumanga Daioh were shown, maybe there would be a positive shift in ratings.
...just a suggestion.

Why is she a flamer? I feel the same way!
Shows like: Kare Kano, Revolutionary Girl: Utena and Fruits Basket would do wonderful.

AS has already said that they won't be airing romantic comedy-type shows. Otherwise, Kare Kano would have aired already.

Adult Swim has a very male-oriented outlook. I think most of their shows aim at that male 18-39 range that all networks want so badly, and I don't think they're really pining to get the women watching. Think of Adult Swim as a mini-Spike TV, except better.

Kare Kano is on the FUNimation Channel.

Yeah, I know. I mean back when Kim Manning did that prediction thing with that anime magazine two years ago.

So [as] won't air romantic comedy anime...fine fine. But what's their policy on softcore hentai, huh? :p

That's weird. Then why would they show anime that has a romantic comedy element in it, especially with Inu-Yasha where whole episodes have just been about feelings inbetween the action?
I just don't want [as] to end up with ratings problems because anime is plummeting because their selection is limited and then they have to put on a whole bunch of crap shows to boost ratings while forgetting their original intentions in order to get more of an aduience. *cough*G4TV*cough*
Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating but it is a fear.

Because there is more than enough action in the show to air it. The romantic comedy is just extra.

Aside from a few shows, anime has never done that well compared to comedy shows on AS.

They don't want anything to do with boobies.

And that's why they air a full hour of Inuyasha four nights a week.

Here I figured it was a way to get rid of the series faster...

I agree that AS should be running shows with a strong romantic streak, if not an actual romance series. Guys can be drawn to shows like Fruits Basket or Utena just as well as girls can, although they might not openly admit it.
Alternatively, AS could consider action shows with strong female protagonists. Something along the lines of Noir, for instance. But as long as the male-oriented action anime is doing well enough in the ratings, AS will have no reason to change their approach. (^_*)

Uh... Ghost in the Shell?

Before AS acquired Family Guy and Futurama, action and comedy got about the same in ratings.

As scary as it seems, Inuyasha does have a pretty big male fanbase, at least out of the Inuyasha fans I know the majority of them are male...still scary though. It's a shounen anime, it's aimed at boys/young men.

1. I do get into the romantic comedy series' personally. I loved Love Hina (Not the dub and not the horrible OVAs) for instance. But most of my male friends think they're garbage.
2. They already do. Blood+ and Ghost In The Shell.

My friend and I are both males and both fans of the show. We both watch it and rant endlessly back and forth on how stupid the show is and how ridiculously poor the writing is, but at the end of the day we keep watching it and keep discussing it. So we must like it, despite the contradictory ranting.
Actually, I think he quit watching it around the third quarter of the series when we found out the show had no ending but I keep watching it and we still discuss it.
And the fact that I keep watching it in reruns despite having seen almost every episode of the series in first run is even more pathetic. But then, I watch everything on Adult Swim regardless of whether it's good or not.

Am I the only person who cringes when I hear people talking about Inuyasha like it's the greatest masterwork of Japanese animation? I mean, I like the show but the way some of these so-called 'anime fans' treat it, you'd think they didn't know japan had any OTHER animation.
But, yeah, [as] could use some more female oriented shows (maybe not full-blown shoujo, but you know), because those would be interesting and different.

Most of this board has grown sick of Inu-Yasha and Rumiko in general, so no.
As for Shoujo, Swimtorrent went on a rant last week and pretty much said "Shoujo does not fit with the adult swim spirit." Where does shoujo and romance fit alongside stuff like Bleach and Assy McGee? Honestly? It's a total style clash.

I'm watching every episode too, despite the fact that the only IY products I would ever consider buying are Movies 3 & 4.
However, I only watch the anime most of the time, though I'll probably skip Eureka Seven whenever it goes into reruns. Sunday nights I usually go to bed after BSG and the only comedies I'll watch reruns of are the original AS toons (SGC2C, Brak Show, Sealab, ATHF) and Moral Orel.

I think Fushigi Yugi would be an awesome show for Adult Swim. And it does have a fair amount of action. But, Adult Swim would probably say it's too old.

The issue I see with the action-only policy isn't that it favors guys or girls. It's just simple fact that you don't always have a constant rate of good action shows coming out.
Some seasons are always going to lean heavier toward pure dramas or comedies. We're seeing the results of a year where people went nuts for shows like "BECK" and "Haruhi Suzumiya," which were better than all the action stuff put together.
But because AS can only do action, they wind up showing second rate stuff like "Scryed" when the available shows in that narrow category run dry. And it's even harder now, because they actually have competition for the titles.

I think Utena would be good for [adult swim] since it has action and romance but then again everytime I see I get the urge to stand up and yell "lesbian power!" randomly so there may or may not be issues there. o_O
I also think Azumanga Daioh would work since it's funny. Rose of the Versailles is a girly action show but they'd probably say it's too and "what the heck is that?". Magic Knight Rayearth is shoujo but it also has action, but it may or may not be too old: considering how [as] defines old.
And just to put it out there: Slayers, which may or may not be too old.
I also think Azumanga Daioh would work since it's funny.
Torrent threatened to ban someone who suggested Daioh, claiming the Adult Swim spirit as his defense.

I'd like to take this opportunity to come out of the Shoujo closet. It is a cramped closet, several doors down from the one with Cruise, Travolta, and R. Kelly, but nevertheless nicely adorned with lace curtains on the non-existent windows. Now, in spite of the fact that we just got new carpeting, I'm stepping out, leaving that closet behind me.
As for Shoujo, Swimtorrent went on a rant last week and pretty much said "Shoujo does not fit with the adult swim spirit." Where does shoujo and romance fit alongside stuff like Bleach and Assy McGee? Honestly? It's a total style clash.
Personally, I think that's Assy McGee's problem... and it wouldn't be the show's first.
But "Adult Swim Spirit"? Seriously? This is the block that has airred a variety of shows ranging from Futurama and Cowboy Bebop to Chunk Norris Commandos and Super Milk Chan. And Saved by the Bell. And PeeWee's Playhouse. And Reign. And The Smoking Gun. And The Groovenians.
Two years ago live action shows would have been against the "adult swim spirit". That spirit is a very fluid idea — one that should not be the basis of an argument for or against a show or genre's inclusion in the block.
So far as the question of fitting the shows into the scedule: that kind of depends on which shows you're talking about. Bleach and Assy McGee wouldn't exactly transition well into one another, but they both have places on the block. The same is also true if the discussion were restricted to only the anime: there's a reason that Trinity Blood didn't, and now Blood+ doesn't run straight into Eureka 7.

Maybe you should ask Lifetime or WE or even Oxygen to air some of the shows you suggested. Lifetime destroys everyone with the female audience they have.

I originally thought Logo.
And also: spirit? SPIRIT? Adult Swim's spirit changes every year! The first time they aired, they were just about cartoons for mature audience. Then it became a more mature version of Toonami. Then it became the action block. Then it became the anime and action block. If Toonami can air something like Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura what's the big problem with adult swim then?
And as for fitting in, a lot of the adult swim shows clash if you ask me.
Let's run down the list:
several 15-minute long bouts of insanity both humorous and completely stupid, a sci-fi show that's been stuck in repeats for gods know how long, a syndicated show that can be called a more adult version of the Simpsons, really old shows that used to air on Toonami or Adult Swim a long time ago and their age is starting to show a little, action anime featuring vampires because someone in the writing department wasn't feeling creative to do something different, an anime that is pretty much YuYu Hakusho with more women and better animation, and oh, yeah an anime that has annoying fans, an anime by that guy who made Cowboy Bebop but wasn't as interesting, a show where the characters wiggle like there's something wrong their muscle controls...must I go on?
If you ask me, that's a lot of variety where you can easily plug shoujo in.
