View Full Version : Food for thought about JL

I've seen the Batman and Superman series, and I think they're done very well, but I also think that JL is pretty good, too - just different.

I don't know who the animators are per se, or what stock footage came from where, but I do know how something makes me FEEL. Watching Paradise Lost made me, as a WW fan, ecstatic to see Diana on screen again, and being a strong character.

I've seen so much of Superman and Batman especially that I don't really get bothered if they're powered down. I want to see Diana used to her potential. She's supposed to be one of the "BIG THREE" of DC Comics (and if you read issue #177 this week, you'd know why she is). She deserves to be given strong scripts and deep characterization.

And if the writers mess with continuity? big deal ... her lasso not able to evoke the truth? we'll get over it ... her mother's hair blonde? oh well .. at least we saw Hippolyta and she was amazing. Her origin tampered with? welllllll, here I would have loved to have seen a tournament against other Amazons, but maybe we will see other things in the future.

I just want to see Diana shown WELL. :)

End of my $.02

Themysciran,

I think that the way Wonder Woman has been portrayed has been done wonderfully. And, I love her voice, her stamina, her emotive tendencies (subtle, but there nevertheless), and her charm. ;)

I have a couple of questions--

I've read a couple of posts that disagreed with the way the mythology has been handled (e.g., not getting it 'quite right'). IYO, do you believe it has to mirror what the texts say? And if not, why not?

Secondly, what are Hippolyta's powers? I watched Part 2 of PL a third time, and I'm still trying to decide what she's got (and what she doesn't necessarily have). Any ideas?

Hippolyte is an Amazon which makes her an excellent hand-to-hand combatant, after all, she's trained for 3000 years. She has no special "powers" - only Diana was gifted by the goddesses with unique abilities.

As far as mythology, Diana's mythology/continuity has followed Greek mythology since Perez brought her back in 1986. Occasionally, writers tweak something that doesn't wash well, but I think with JL, the writers tweaked a bit much (regular lasso, Herakles not Hades was Hippolyta's love interest, etc.)

Poetic license, I guess. Just don't mess with the basics and I will be okay. :D

I have to agree with Themysciran on atleast one thing. I like to see ALL characters done right. It really messes up a show when people with big money and little character knowledge don't get things right. Also, I can't stand when ashow gets such good ratings, they come up with *stupid* episodes just to continue it. Not to say that happened here.

"Paradise Lost" has improve my opinion on WW in the show. In the begining, I never liked her charecter and the voice work was weak compared to the others. After watching this episode I've noticed the voice work was much better and her attitude had fire.

I have to say I miss the lasso of truth. Without she seems like a female Superman. In the comics they make a big deal and Diana herself being a "Spirit of Truth." (See recent JLA) And the title of the recent Alex Ross Wonder Woman book? Spirit of Truth.

I too am impressed with the job they've done on Diana.I miss the lasso (why get rid of her coolest toy?) but the show has managed to do what the comics have failed at-making her relatable. I actually sympathized with her here, whereas no matter how many times I try (and re-try) to get into the comic, I can't seem to care about her at all. I heard they were shifting the comic (again) so maybe I'll try to start picking it up (again) but I fear I'll be dissapointed...

Overall I have not been to concerned about the lasso not following continuity - I mean if we're going to question that, then where is the invisible jet? Granted it is a fairly important part of the character but Diana can still be the Spirit of Truth without the lasso - I mean in the show Supes is no where near as strong as he is in the comics and the animated universe has wavered from the comics quite a few times. Besides, has anyone thought that maybe the truth part is a latent ability within Diana and it's just focused through her lasso. Maybe after working with the Martain Manhunter she'll have developed this latent ability and be able to channel it. I'm sure I'm going to get nailed on this post but I don't think that just because something has shown up yet doesn't mean it won't show up later. (I mean which scene was better - Diana getting Deadshot to talk or Bats with Superman telling Diana she didn't want to know what Bats said to get him to talk? That's what I thought, plus in the comic she doesn't always use the lasso to get the truth out of people - it's a weapon she can choose to use or not use.)

Just my 2 cents.

I found WW really hot in Paradise Lost pt 2. Is it wrong to find a cartoon hot?

To be perfectly honest, yes. A little bit wrong. But you're far from alone I'm sure.
