I was thinking about purchasing all the dvd's for dragonball, dragonball z, and gt when I realized they only sell edited versions of dragonball online. Is there any chance that unedited versions will be released or will i have to contend myself with purchasing a completly butchered childish version?

The only episodes of Dragonball that are edited on DVD are the Pilaf saga. The other episodes are all uncut.

With the exception of the previews. The Pilaf arc is available uncut in Australia from FUNi. I think that there is some rights issue that's kept it from coming out over here.

Yea, Kidmark/Lions Gate has the license to the early episodes forever, and even though FUNi keeps bugging them about allowing the uncuts to be released, Lions Gate doesn't really care and is virtually ignoring FUNi.

How did you find that out? I thought no one really knows what the deal is with FUNimation's relationship with Trimark about the early episodes. All I know is that FUNimation produced their own version of the entire series that's run on Cartoon Network and the FUNimation Channel, and FUNi has the North American DVD rights to all the epsiodes except the first 13, because Trimark/Lions' Gates still has those rights and has their own DVD of the first 13 episodes they produced in 1995. But it looks like all the DragonBall DVDs are going out-of-print, and I don't think it'll be long before FUNimation gets to sell their own version of the entire series to Americans.

It's been stated about 3 or 4 times in the Ask a FUNi Rep thread.

Any chance of FUNi getting them before HFIL freezes over? And why could LG have them here and not overseas? Ooey dooey somethings screwy.

FUNimation paired up with Kidmark when it dubbed the first 13 episodes of Dragonball and the first movie. When Dragonball failed in the ratings, FUNi then partnered up with Saban for Dragonball Z while Kidmark got gobbled up by Lions Gate.

You know, this is getting ridiculous. It's been more than 10 years since the Saban Dragon Ball and we still can't get uncut DVDs of Pilaf saga? How hard is it to negotiate over 13 lousy episodes and one movie?

Saban had nothing to do with the original Dragonball.
And it is rather hard to negotiate with Lions Gate when it seems like they're ignoring you.

The '95 13 episode version?

Which is boggling considering that FUNimation is a well established company.

Yeah, well in Lions Gate eyes, they aren't.

There are OTHER, less FAVORABLE ways to get those episodes in Japanese. That's what I did, but in respect for this boards rules, I won't say WHERE I've obtained them FROM. Not that it matters, I bought the last copy they had, and I haven't seen them anywhere else yet.

But in the televised version, didn't Saban's production logo appear in the end credits? If it did, he must've had some input into how the show originally aired in '95. Possibly wanted more edits done!
Yeah, well in Lions Gate eyes, they aren't.
Isn't FUNimation willing to pay though? You know the old saying "Money talks".

I don't think so. But, I believe DiC's logo appeared.

Well, you could just import the boxset from Australia, though your DVD Player would have to be set up to play Reigon 4 DVDs.

If it did, we would've seen them released by now.
I guess FUNi could throw an exuberant amount at money at Lions Gate, but that's not very good negotiations.

Well, DB is not quite as profitable as DBZ, so I doubt thtat FUNi is going to burn that much money on it.

No, Saban's logo did not appear.

Saban was involved with seasons one and two of DBZ. That is all. Thankfully.

Well, anyhow i still want to purchase them uncut and in english dubbing though. I know very well where i can get them in japanese, w/o english dubbing, but could someone tell me where i can buy them in english. Since they were released in Australia, would i be able to buy the pilaf saga from the Australian Amazon, and is there a complete box set available?

No, you must be thinking about Sailor Moon.
If it did, we would've seen them released by now.

So what does FUNi need to do to get Lion's Gate's attention? Go march over there to the head office and throw a sack of money at the president's face?

If your DVD player can handle Reigon 4 DVDs, then you can just import them from whatever legit site sells them.
I don't believe there's a complete boxset, though.

It's region 4, but there're the first 13 episodes and the first theatrical Dragon Ball film. Uncut except for the previews. With the original Japanese version and the FUNi dub, if that latter is your thing.

Yes. And I doubt that a company of their size has that much money to burn. Lion's Gate are notoriously...well, I can't think of a word that's approbriate for TZ, but I'm told that they're hard to work with, let's put it that way. And...
