View Full Version : Is the Dreamcast Really Making a Comeback?
I don't know why, but I like to look up articles on Wikipedia (taken with a grain of salt) and I was reading the article on the Dreamcast. And it was very interesting, like so (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast) (return of Dreamcast)...
I find it very interesting that some of these older consoles aren't just fading away. Anyway, I was just curious, how right/wrong is this article. (Cuz, you know, I could sell you my Dreamcast... J/K.)

I highly doubt that.
I don't mean anything major by comeback, just like a resurge in popularity... Something akin to cult favorite thing.

Highly doubt what? All of the things mentioned in that portion of the article are true. Just poke around play-asia.com's Dreamcast section to see some of the more recently released DC games. Most are Naomi shooter ports, but still, the Dreamcast has always had a decent fan following, and is receiving somewhat of a revival, now.
It probably won't ever be put back into production, and we probably won't see much in the way of original games (instead of seeing continued ports from Japanese Naomi-based games) but still, it is a revival, nonetheless.

Dreamcast couldn't make a comeback if it tried.
It was nice back in the day, though.

I'd say it's been enjoying cult status for a while.
I guess...
Still, I am curious if those guys are actually going to release that game in April (I think it was...).

I understand the economic reasons but I wish that old consoles could get new releases, too. I'd still buy games for my old systems if they were fun. Some people act like graphics are all that matters.

So, yeah, more proof that Dreamcast was one of the best consoles.
From my experience, half of the Dreamcast's fanbase liked it mostly for purposes that it wasn't meant for. Otherwise, it might not have died as quickly as it did.
Purposes it wasn't meant for? Could you elaborate a bit on that, I don't quite get what you mean/referring to.

"It's my turn to use the sex box!"
"It's my sex box. And her name is Sega!"
Ew. Is that from Family Guy?

The Dreamcast seems to have a bit of a reputation of being popular mostly for that stuff, but honestly, I think that status belongs more with the Xbox which had a much stronger homebrew scene and far fewer worthwhile exclusive games. Honestly, I'd never give up my DC for all the excellent exclusive games, yet I'd probably never use my Xbox if it weren't for homebrew like Xbox Media Center.

Yeah, the "Merry Freakin' Christmas" episode.
Ew, I can't believe I got that right. Ew... *shudders*
Thanks E-Pilot. Never realized my DC could be used in such a fashion (assuming I had/have all the right stuff). Guess I am ignorant. :)

That, and IIRC most of the DC homebrew stuff didn't really take off until after Sega had abandoned the system, it's not really accurate to cite it as a reason for the system's death.

Yes, but the main difference is that anyone who felt like it could illegitimately obtain Dreamcast games. The Piracy was a major problem for the system, even then.

Hey, it never left for me. I've still got it sitting in front of my TV. I admit, however, that the emulation scene plays a big part in that for me. I've never pirated a Dreamcast game, but I do have NES and Sega Master System emulators.
Dreamcast is a much pirated system, I admit, but you can't blame its downfall solely on pirates. The pirate's paradise PSX survived them.

I thought for sure it was Sony?
Funny, I was thinkin' it was Sony too. I assumed s/he changed it to be more relevant.

It was Sony, but I think it was a joke. You know? Someone said purposes it wasn't meant for and he posted that, which isn't a purpose it wasn't intended for (at least, I hope not...). Humor. Haha.
But no. Dreamcast died in 2002, and it's been dead since. Some people still make minor games for older consoles from time to time, but that doesn't mean full blown support for it is gonna up and come out of nowhere.

The original Jet Set Radio for Dreamcast is one of the best games to this day, which I still play religiously for the soundtrack alone.
That's why I clarified "comeback" as in "cult favorite" (3rd post). I did mention that he was trying to make the quote relevant to his joke.
I do wonder though, if the DC had succeeded, would Nintendo have been the one to bow out of the next gen race? That Gamecube thread got me thinkin' about it. And no, I DON'T mean go out of business, but focus on publishing (or the handhelds) and then try the console business again.

And I mean activity as in real commercial releases, not those pirated Atari or NES cartridges or roms that show up all over the place.

Nintendo was in a much better financial state than Sega was at the time, I believe, so while Sega couldn't financially afford to research, develop, and release another console, Nintendo probably could have almost regardless of how bad they tanked. Sega was staking the last they had on the Dreamcast, but I don't think Nintendo has been in that position as of yet.
