Ok, this really did come out of the blue.
Anyways, Moonphase recently started listing this over on their site, expected to air on TV-Tokyo this April 2nd at 6PM. I did a little research, since there's no real information on the site, and I can say this doesn't appear to be a 4Kids series. The series is listed as being a CGAnime (Which can either mean Full Blown Computer Generated Anime, or a mixture, similar to what Gonzo has done. Might be the first...), and from what I could tell, it doesn't appear to be related to the 4Kids series...
Take this as you might...
(Note: At this time, no studio or anything else has been announced. I'm suspecting Gonzo, but typically they announce this stuff in advance.)

Thrilling and interesting news... perhaps.
I smell Gonzo.
Unfortunately this will surely be on 4kidsTV at some point because they more or less own TMNT besides the comics.

Well that will suck. Unless they pull of a miracle and find a voice cast worthy of the last two.
*pause* I must be letting the worms chewing on my brain too long. This is 4kids we're talking about!

Isn't the TMNT movie also debuting in Japan around that time?
If so, maybe this is like a prequal to it?
4kids' TMNT cartoon doesn't air in Japan, does it?

Potential yes. Any good source material has potential. Take Shakespeare for example. One could, in theory, make a far future version of Julius Caesar anime akin Reign in some respects. But is that a) honestly how one should go with it and b) the actors/scripts/participants involved being worthy?
Just pointing out the pit falls.

I'm sure if 4kids does get it they'll just the cast they already have. Though Sam Regal might be replaced because he sorta does TMNT long distance and having to do ADR work might be the hump to break the camels back so to speak. Hopefully they could find a decent replacement... Or they might opt for using the movie cast.
A prequel is possible in relation to the CGI movie but a sequel is just about as likely I'd say.

I'm getting good flashbacks to how Galaxy Force was the best Transformers series ever.
It probably won't be another parody of the Turtles this time (PARODY. PA-RO-DY) so movie continuity for all!

Color me highly skeptical for now, we've been here before. Then again, its probably impossible to do worse than this (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4107).

Just...how popular is Ninja Turtles over in japan? Do the kids there like it? hate it? meh to it?
Personally, I would like to see this anime (CGI or otherwise) do Eastman and Laird's story in the true vision of their original comics, violence and all!
I know the 90's TV series wasn't all that popular.

What? You people don't like the TMNT OVA? I LOVED that show! I wish it had been a full series instead of just an OVA.

You mean the OVA? I don't it made any waves... Not even really a blip on the radar. It was only made to sell some of the toys (we got those toys here but not the anime officially).
Perhaps you mean Next Mutation. It did pretty well ratings wise I hear but FOX didn't keep interest and wanted to focus on Power Rangers (as usual).
But if you mean the 90s seasons of the original cartoon... Bite your tounge. I do believe it was quite successful on CBS until they dumped it for education programing.
I meant in Japan. TMNT didn't seem to make a dent in the market there.
I liked the OAV, but I liked this one website (which unfortunately I don't have the link to now) that made fun of it even more.
How can you not like a TMNT where they spend hours climbing a wall, only to go "why don't we take the stairs?"

It must have, at some point. I mean, they got animation produced just for the Japanese market with the OAV.

If there is a new anime series based on TMNT, I personally think that would be awesome! I'm a big fan of the original cartoon series and also enjoyed the anime OVA series. I wish, though, that people would actually watch the OVA series before criticizing it based on screenshots. If you do, you'll see that it's intended to be a parody of not only the original cartoon series, but also some anime cliches in general. It's not meant to be taken seriously as some "Saint Seiya" interpretation of TMNT or something. Although maybe you have to be a fan of both the original TMNT series and anime to find it entertaining, I don't know. Anyway, interesting news, and I hope this turns out to be something good!

I still find it odd why some information was calling this CGAnime though.
Well, whatever. Guess there's no point this topic anymore...

Is it normal for it to take almost 5 years? I know the Italian dub was running parallel to the US version, give or take a couple episodes.

I guess it depends on the series.

You know what would be cool, that wouldn't interfere with the new show so much? If that really where a CGI Anime series based on the old show. Most of the folks here won't see it for years till it's dubbed anyway, and Pete can have a somewhat more action packed version of the old show that he can respect a bit more :).

Yeah, 4Kids does just fine when it comes to their own work; it's when they're adapting an existing show (ie, a dub) that you have to worry.

I wonder if this will give rise to the turtles' popularity in japan? It would be interesting if it would. After all, ninjas are considered cool and turtles ("kame") are considered good luck in japan. :)

Okay, so apparently, the Japanese dub will feature a new opening, like so (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=19083). As usual, the info comes from less-than-totally-reliable sources, so I reserve the right to be completely wrong. If it is true, how common is this? How many dubs get the full, "OP done by an actual semi-recognizable group?" treatment?
In any case, I have to say that I am ridiculously interested in how it works out. Japan dubs a 4Kids' cartoon: it's like Bizarro World.
Random question: does anybody know if the Kanji the series occasionally uses is accurate? That might not go over so well in a place where people can actually read it. Perhaps they'll even have to--GASP!--digitally erase it!
EscaflownePilot
03-24-2007, 01:14 PM
I don't think it's too uncommon for the OP to be replaced with a Japanese single. The original TMNT had several different Japanese EDs, some I think by real artists, and PowerPuff Girls had some Japanese single OPs when it ran on TV Tokyo.
Although, I've never heard of The Inazumi Sentai, and I'm somewhat heavy into the JRock/JPop scene. Doesn't mean they aren't popular for all I know, though. The song is really good, though!
And yet, for as much as I love the song, probably as much as "Turtles Count it Off", I'm not entirely pleased with all the bashing our op is getting now that everyone's hearing this one.
I just hope I can find raws of this when it airs. I wanna' see how it turns out.

Perhaps in a ironic twist, the Japanese dub will completely butcher the show. Now Shredder is called "Spike Dude", he has sent Hamato Yoshi to the Shadow Realm and April is given a random Japanese name. Plus every episode with Stockman is cut out, so they don't have to deal with the whole "losing body parts" issue. :D
Seriously isn't ironic that TMNT has more Japanese content then any of the animes 4kids dubs?

Not really when you consider Peter Laird has just as much control over the show as 4Kids.
So the opening has been posted on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGHmuRyOh7M). Not bad--they did as well as could be expected, given that they couldn't exactly create new stuff for it, and that they seem to have limited themselves to Season 1 stuff for their footage selection. I do wish they had stayed away from the official TMNT art--that stuff is damn ugly, and its jarring to see the original art combined with the newer one--and had instead gone entirely with footage or done what the creators did for the turtle-specific parts of the second American intro. Particularly amusing are the two shuriken in the logo (Naruto, anyone?) and the fact that they left in the original intro's Akira homage (Raph in the motorcycle). In any case, I'm interested to see what they'll come up with in latter seasons, when the show expands beyond the Turtles/Foot thing (Season 5 should be interesting) and they have better stuff to work with.
On a completely different note, it seems the dub is already being described as anime, which amuses me to no end. Silly internet.

TV Tokyo now has a site up for the show, complete with a trailer, for anyone who's interested:

I think I like Raphael's voice, but at the same time it seems a bit too overdramatic.
At any rate, I really hope the raw for this "becomes available", because so far it hasn't turned up in any of the usual places.

Does anyone know when they're getting the movie? It does sound like maybe they held off the show in Japan to be released closer to the movie. My guess is it'll be later this year- I know Meet the Robinsons is being held off until the weather cools over there.

I thought the movie was coming to Japan in April but I could be wrong about that.
I watched the first episode and that was definentily an interesting experience. Because internet goer seem to think it's a new anime it might even get fansubbed and I'd like to see that happen because it's easy to tell most of what they're saying isn't a direct translation (they have to match the lip flap afterall). The use the original BGM which is interesting to hear behind Japanese vocals. Leo and Don sound good, Raph sounds kind of like Zoro from One Piece (in Japanese) and Mikey uh... yeah... pretty wierd sounding. Splinter doesn't sound right to me either. But ya know... for some reason I prefer to hear random thugs in Japanese. They're no doubt being as cheezy as they are in the original but it doesn't sound as cheezy to me so I like it better.
The opening is pretty good but the ending is boring. Still... more interesting than the very short original ending. Strange to see Kahn's name listed during a Japanese broadcast though. And in English I might add.
I think I'll watch some more if I can because it's a slightly new and fun experience to hear the Turtles in Japanese.
Also when Eastman and Laird cops showed up and Eastman cop says that green guys just gave them money all Laird cop says is "baka" which really cracked me up.

Also when Eastman and Laird cops showed up and Eastman cop says that green guys just gave them money all Laird cop says is "baka" which really cracked me up.Lol. Yeah, me too. I forgot, what he say in the English version of that scene?
I forgot, what he say in the English version of that scene? He says "Rookie." Speaking of changes, I find it interesting that the Foot Ninja are renamed "Foot Soldiers" here, at least going from the website. OMG! They're changing everything! They're taking away references to Japan! They're butchering our show! ;)
So far, I'd have to say that Leo and Donny have the best voices, followed by Michelangelo. Raph and Splinter need some getting used to, but they're not horrible. Unfortunately, I didn't get to hear Saki (stupid 56k modem). Is he any good?
Sketch: Because internet goer seem to think it's a new anime it might even get fansubbed and I'd like to see that happen because it's easy to tell most of what they're saying isn't a direct translation (they have to match the lip flap afterall). And then, when the people who think it's an anime see the English version, they'll whine and whine and whine about how the English totally doesn't match the Japanese and we'll all be very amused at their ignorance, or at least I will, cause I'm an ass. By the way, am I to assume that you're Ninja Tittup from the Technodrome forums?
The use the original BGM which is interesting to hear behind Japanese vocals. Now that you mention it, it'll be interesting to see what they do with Season 2's two vocalized songs. Will they simply translate the lyrics, or will they add entirely new songs? Will they change it at all? The mind boggles.

Is there any way to find out ratings of the first episode in Japan? I'm curious as to how well the show is being received over there.
I know the original TMNT cartoon was a hit over there so there are plenty of fans over in Japan, but that doesn't mean much for the new toon.
After all, the original TMNT cartoon was huge in the U.S. but the new 2k3 cartoon barely made a dent in the popularity the old toon had. Its really a shame that the new show never became that popular, so I'm wondering if its fairing better in Japan.
So, Japan is only halfway throught the first season (the Notes From the Underground arc), and the series already has new opening and ending themes. I'd complain about how it took 78 episodes before the States got a new opening, if it weren't for the fact that the new one isn't very good. While the song ("Permanent Vacation") is about on par with the previous ones, the visuals are for the most part uninteresting. The ending theme, on the other hand, looks decent, even if the song doesn't fit the turtles at all.
