View Full Version : Would you forgive Superman?

OK, I know we're all fans, but pretend you're an average joe in the DC animated universe. First Superman vanishes for a month and returns leading an army against Earth. (Legacy) You hear something about how he was brainwashed, but still. Then he removes all of our nuclear weapons, clearing the way for a second invasion. (Secret Origins) I'm not sure how I'd feel.

It would be hard for him to win back the public's trust, since much of the good the League does is completely out of the public eye. No one saw them disarm the Atlantian Doomsday machine, save Green Latern from a bogus charge, or send Hades back to the Underworld.

I agree that it would be very hard to trust Big Blue after everything that's happened. That's the only part that bothers me about huge, continuity altering storylines - At least take the time to show their aftermath and explain how they altered everything! Great stories that just end without a follow-up really bug me...

Let's see a Superman Adventures mini-series following "Legacy"!

In the case of Legacy I'd gather that it took a few years actually for him to win back the publics trust, probably the entire duration of time between Legacy and Secret Origins.

In the case of Secret Origins though, I have no doubt that Jay Carters identity being revealed as an alien made people feel much more betrayed. After all, they were just as much fooled by him as Superman was.

While much of what the JL does is out of public eye, Superman is an extremely public hero. They've seen him do everything from saving cats from the perilous heights of trees to helping the city against the Intergang mob. And usually what they don't witness for themselves, Lois or Clark have it written in full detail in the Daily Planet. Except for Luthor, Turpin (originally), that Army general guy, and whacked out supervillains, everyone held Superman in the highest regard - I can imagine ex-criminals tellings stories to their kids of the time Superman changed their lives, or shook hands with them or something. I think its completely possible and probable that they could get over Legacy.

Secret Origins, however, is another story. Not only did he disarm the nukes, but he ran away after the aliens started attacking! Knowing Superman is an alien himself doesn't help either... I'll admit, I can be pretty fickle, and no amount of past good publicity could make me ignore that.

Yes, but once he comes back with the other heroes in tow then it becomes plainly obvious to the public that Superman went for help.

Granted, you would have people who would still say that he ran away. You'd always have that one guy on Chris Matthews Hardball *****ing about it and people like him would doubtless be backed up by guys like that general who just seems to hate the League anyway.

Still, I think the majority of the public can see the situation very clearly. Of course, you'll have your cynics. Most cynics will tell you the glass is half empty even when its spilling over the top. They'll say the excess water is a conspiracy. :p

This was a two-part episode of the animated show, right? I haven't seen it, what happened? And were the episodes based on a comic book storyline? In No Man's Land, Batman referred to Superman trying to take over the world. Same story?

No. In the comics, Superman was fooled by Dominus to do weird stuff (like temporarily droppping his secret Identity, trying to protect the world 24/7, ripped off the top floor of LexCorp; after Lutohr left). In the cartoon, Darkseid brainwashed Superman into attacked Earth. When Superman broke freeoff the mind control, he was ticked to the point to the point of attacking Apokolips, going after the people who brainwashed him (shocking Granny Goodness with her Rod and the device she did the brainwasning with, knocking Lashina, Stompa, and Mad Harriet out of the fround when they followed him via hoverdisks, and fighting and injurying Darkseid in hand to hand combat).

Was he acting along in this, or did he have some kind of army behind him (to accomplish the 24/7 protection).

He had an army of robots built to help do that.
