The title says what to put here. Say your top two with some supporting evidence. Please, don't say something just because it's popular (ie, don't say N*sync or Blink-182 just because they are your favorite.)

For me, the doors. Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger, and John Desmore, one of the greatest super-groups ever made. Krieger was a genius in his own right; some overlook him and go straight to Morrison. Krieger wrote "Light My Fire", "Love Her Madly," and a good chunk of the doors' reportoire. He is a kick a-- guitar player. Morrison wrote the majority of songs including "The End", "The Soft Parade", and "Celebration of the Lizard". Jim never planned on singing; he was just going to be a writer and Ray was going to be the singer. Ray persuaded Jim to get up on stage. Jim Morrison is the only poet I can really read. I can hear unwritten music in my head when I read his stuff. Morrison was a true poet.

Cream was fantastic. Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, and God himself, Eric Clapton, three of the greatest musicians of their time. "White Room", "Badge", "Sunshine of Your Love", and "Tales of Brave Ulysses" are required guitar player songs. All three were considered prodigies in his field. Clapton is what every guitarist wants to be. As Clapton raged on lead guitar, Bruce did bass 'solos' at the same time. Baker inspired many, many drum players that learned in 1960s and the 1970s.

Led Zepplin and the Who are close to the top of my list as well, but the doors and Cream get my vote.

Your turn.

I Have to say Queen... BECAUSE THEY'RE MY FAVORITE! ;) : Also:

It's hard to find a band with a more distinctive sound. Unlike the Beatles, they're sytle could not be easily duplicated. All were surprisingly strong singers who harmonized perfectly to create true Rock-Opera's; pwerful and artful. They are also notable for being one of the pioneering bands to do movie soundtrack work, before it became common practice.

I'm gonna toss in Pink Floyd's hat into the ring here. For no other reason than they made some great, great music.

The Ramones - They revolutionized punk rock. If there were no Ramones, then there would be no blink -182-, Sex Pistols, or Green Day!

My personal favorite is the Doors, but I have to say that Led Zeppelin was the greatest rock and roll band ever. They influence everything that came after them. I pick them over the Beatles cause I just love that meaty sound they had.

I pretty much agree with all the bands that have been listed and I'll throw a few in as well;

The Beatles - no band has ever inspired more people than this one...

Kiss - another inspiring band, without them a lot of the heavy metal bands that came up during the 80s and 90s would not be here...

Van Halen - this band houses one of the greatest guitar players that ever lived as well as being a killer band...

Let's remember that favorite and greatest are two different things.

The greatest: The Beatles, without a doubt.

My favorite? Maybe the Beatles, maybe Led Zeppelin or Nirvana. It's hard to say.

Considered to be? I didn't know there was a definite ordaining of the "greatest rock band of all time."

Well, except by those rabid Beatles fans. Yikes. :p

Radiohead and Pink Floyd. I always go into some sort of trance while listening to "Echoes" by Pink Floyd.

I have not. Please, tell us something about them...maybe a song that one of us might have heard.

Oh, it would be real easy for me to throw out a bunch of bands that have come to be as of recent, well, one of them will be and I know I'll catch some crap for it, but here I go....

311- who can think of a band that's got a sound like theirs. lyrics like theirs, and the energy they've got? Not very many...

And to stick with the "progressive" type music, I'll say Yes. Again, an awesome sound not very often duplicated since their time, and they're still going strong to this day... :bosko:

Yes they are truly awesome. David Lee Roth or with Sammy Hagar. With Eddie On guitar, Mike on bass and Alex on drums. You can't get any better.

That was my point. Personally I like the Doors, but I thing Zep did more for Rock and roll. I just don't think the Beatles were as influential as Zeppelin. They surely weren't more influential on what has become Rock and Roll today. Elvis, Chuck Berry and even Robert Johnson have them beat on that.

I guess I just don't get the whole Beatles thing.

I think Meddle is the best Pink Floyd album. Echoes is great, so is One of these days, and the rest of the songs. Next I'd have to say is Dark Side of the Moon, Wish you were here, Animals, Piper at the Gates of dawn, and the Wall. I put the Wall at the end cause I've just listened to it too much.

It's cool to see that someone gets into Floyds earlier albums! Have you listened to Piper? Astronomy Dominae is awesome!

OK for three posts in a row from Croc.

Yeah, they are great. Not only do they have a lot of good songs, the diversity in they're work is incredible. It's hard to believe that Death on two legs, Lily of the Valley, and Crazy little thing called love all came from the same band. Also, I've heard a concert recording of them doing some really trippy Pink Floyd type stuff. Kind of a space thing.

Oh yeah, and another great band that lots of people haven't heard of is Hawkwind. They're like a cross between Iron Maiden and Pink Floyd, except with Lemmy Kilmeister of Motorhead on bass. They never got very popular cause Universal did a crappy job of marketing them.

Motorhead is pretty popular now. At the moment they are doing the wrestler Triple H's theme. It's on the CD WWF:5.

The Beatles had more talent than any other group with three great songwriters and singers. In particular, John and Paul had a strong grasp on wide variety of instruments as well as great studio skills in addition to their singing and songwriting. The Beatles continued to push their music forward with incredible development of their songs from the beginning of their career to the end. They had a lot of releases in a short span (13 albums from 1963-1970), yet show consistency at a high level. With the Revolver album, they accomplished something greatly different than what had been heard before. Revolver, along with Sgt. Pepper, had huge influence. They had a competitive spirit not just with other groups, but with each other, continually pushing themselves to be better. And of course, there's also the high number of number one albums and hit songs, as well as very positive reviews from critics. The Beatles had both popular and critical success to a very high degree.

I think the combination of all that, of the things they accomplished, the strength of songwriting, their ambition, their talent, the way the perfectly matched one another, their success...all that puts them above other groups. I'm NOT saying this is music everybody should love. I'm NOT saying everybody should love the Beatles or even like them. I AM saying that they had an incredible impact on music. Taken together, the things they accomplished are staggering.

Yes, I have listened to Piper... and Astronomy Domine is awesome! Understand the thing about "the Wall" -- I have also listened to it a bit too much. It's a great album none the less.

Currently I'm getting into Animals. And I love "Dogs"... it's amazing on how some band could create such great music.

Yeah, it's freaky to think about how they took instruments that had never been used to make music before and figured out how to make something so great to listen to.

Then on the other hand they used some of the same old instruments and made them sound like they never had before.

I saw a documentary thing on them and David Gilmour is playing around with a moog and is like "I just figured out we could make it do this sound." Then he went on and made music from it.
