Saw the trailer during last week's heroes and been watching the 2 trailers over at apple.com/trailers (in HD). Man, this movie looks sweet. Epic battles and eyecandy up the wazzu. Gladiator meets Matrix? maybe, but it looks hella sweet. Anyone else psyched? and anyone can tall me about the Frank Miller comic behind it?
Only thing I find wrong with it is the name...they should have named it "Sparta" or something similar.

As a History major, I want to see it out of interest in the topic alone. Thermopylae has long been one of the most legendary battles in the history of mankind, and for good reason. The basically ridiculous premise of a mere 300 or so Spartans standing up to a Persian force hundreds of times larger than their own for more than 3 days is something worth making a movie out of.
Of course, with Frank Miller, it's bound to be heavily stylized and not to care much about historical accuracy, but the fundamental basis for the story makes this a movie to catch.

I'm looking foward to see it in the theathers. I think it would be great. They are using the same filming techniques they have used in Sin City.
I've read the comics. It's genious. The one thing I like about Frank Miller is that he reuses a lot of his previous works in other comic books without getting repetitive. The Persians, for instance, are very similar to the The Hand Ninjas enemies of Elektra.

We saw the trailer during heroes as well and my roommate put it best: "is that a game or a movie?"
I love the art direction for the film and hope I get a chance to see it in theaters.

Gladiator meets Matrix?
Closer to Gladiator meets Sin City... it uses similarly extensive digital technology to replicate an artistic "graphic novel" feel.
Only thing I find wrong with it is the name...they should have named it "Sparta" or something similar.
The number "300" is in reference to the number of Spartans that, according to legend, took part in the Battle of Thermopylae. Frankly, it's a much more interesting title... this is not a literal movie, it's an artistic one.
As a general FYI, 300 will be released in IMAX theaters on the same day as its wide theatrical opening.

It's also loosely based on The 300 Spartans (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055719/). While still quite a departure from either that movie or actual history, I think its closer to the former than the latter.

Except "Sparta" would not be an interesting name at all, and "300" gives it a slight vaugeness that makes any moviegoer who doesn't know about it go "Huh, wonder what that's about" before seeing the rather large Spartan man on the poster.
The Persian/Peloponnese conflict is one of the most interesting wars of the ancient world, and ever since studying Greek History as a sophomore, the one I was most surprised no one ever turned into a film.
I see my Greek professor having a fit, but the movie looks great.

It looks gloriously self-indulgent! I just hope the story is worth the visuals. I'll be seeing it one way or another.

If I recall correctly, the 300 Spartans were backed up by a thousand or so soldiers from Thebes. Didn't really matter though, as the Greeks still faced a force of 500,000 soldiers. The fact that small of a force managed to hold Theroplaye, and probably saved Greek culture, is worth making a movie.

Just saw the trailers...AWESOME! :anime: :D
Beautiful imagery, and the portrayal of these Spartans rock! From the trailers, the Spartans look and seem tough. They ozze strength, almost invincibility and being the ultimate soldiers. Yeah, its not histoically accurate, but who cares? The imagery is powerful and one just knows why you didn't mess with Sparta.
Most people that do something manly don't get remembered for it after a year, let alone two millenia.
I think it's the obligation of every man to see this movie.
