View Full Version : Dr. Slump on Toonami...

I have noticed that recent topic of conversation on this board has been about the "new additions" to the Toonami schedule. I have also noticed that a few people get nervous when it mentioned that the "Akira Toriyama cash cow" (Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z) is running dry. Solution: Show Dr. Slump. Granted, it might be a bit dated (the show itself is about 20 years old, and the manga is even older) and in need of a little editing, but would still fit in the Toonami lineup pretty well. It's obvious that Mr. Toriyama's works are hot right now, so why not capitalize right now? Besides, they can always link it to Dragon Ball Z. They do happen in the same universe, after all.

Even better... much better is Dragon Warrior which was began here in the US but never finished.
Characters look alot like the DBZ heroes and it's definately heavy on the action!
It's about as dated looking as the first season of DBZ.

If I remember right CN would have a problem with Dr. Slump because isn't one of the characters a talking piece of solid human waste? I know Comedy Central lets South Park have a similar character but that's on a TV-MA 'rated' show.

I think that "South Park" recieved the TV-MA rating due to plot points other than Mr. Hankey. If they can edit "Dragonball" for content, they can probably edit Dr. Slump.

Well, if worse comes to worse and they'd have no choice but to edit the fact that the show's cast includes multicolored talking crap, go the Digi-way.
Call 'it "Sludge".
On a side note, I second the notion to bring Dragon Warrior (or, maybe, I dunno...a Chrono Trigger anime? Blah, I'm kiddin' myself :p :p :p )

umm...ok, the south park mr. hanky episodes are the WORST episodes. I hate them. Gross out humor is for three year olds, and i'm being lenient there. I have to say I agreed with cartman when he said:
"talking poo is where I draw the line"
Talking pigs, cats, and unidentifiable animals is fine, but Toonami does not need a show where a major character is another mr. hanky. There are a million other action cartoons out there, there are options.

But you've gotta admit, that first Mr Hanky episode had a great moral to it.
Oddly enough, a lot of South Park episodes do. (The early ones, anyway; haven't seen it much recently.)

[indent]How much action does Dr. Slump have?

Not as much as DRAGON WARRIOR!!!

[indent]Is DW based on any of the specific games? Back in the NES days those were by far some of my favorite games.

Doesn't Dr. Slump have a lot of "dirty jokes" in it? And they could easily call that talking waste a "Talking mudpile" or somethin' unless he looks like an incredibly detailed piece of feces then...I...can't really think of a way to end this sentence.
Plus is it an action show? That might help determine if it can be on Toonami at all, ya know.

Nope, not an action show.... but DRAGON WARRIOR IS!!!!
Fine, fine, I'll make my own Dragon Warrior thread.. :b
As far as I know, the Dragon Warrior anime was based off Dragon Warrior III.

They should make a new Legand of Zelda cartoon. Of course it would more than likely be anime though. But it would so cool if there was a new Zelda cartoon!

AHHHH! NO! NEVER, EVER mention the Zelda animated series in my presence again! The entire show is just Gannon shaking his fist and yelling "Damn that plumber! Er, I mean, Elf-thing!" and then Link saves Zelda, tries to suck out her tonsils, but is always interrupted by a little fairy, whom Link presumably killed in a fit of drunken, hookshot madness, cutting any hope for future episode productions.

Ehhhhhhhh how about no on the animated series based on video games. Most of them have become or already were too hokey to be any good. The Zelda ones always had the princess nagging on Link, the MK ones seemed really dumbed down in terms of violence, and the Game Master ones were as bad as the Zelda ones. The only semi good ones were Street Fighter and the Mario brothers ones since they seemed to stay a little truer to the games. The CG Donkey Kong Country always seemed to be missing something (namely how strong King K. Rule(?) is versus how strong DK is, lack of Dixie Kong apperances, too much Diddy and Donkey, you get the idea). Not too sure about the status of Dragon Warrior but it can't be that good.

Dixie Kong DID show up in the animated series-she was so horribly redesign it barely looked like her (Ponytail...too...SHORT!)

Plus, it was on Fox Family. Fam-freakin' tastic. They sang a lot of songs, and K.Rool was by any account as I could make, homosexual to the extreme! That entire channel is hell on..networky wheels. The Olsen twins...*shudder* However, there was one thing good to come out of that network. A little show in which a kid has a zombie for a father. Or something like that.

[indent]Just because it's based on a video game does not mean it has to be bad. Dragon Warrior should have a chance to stand on its own. I actually liked the Zelda cartoon. Gannon probably wasn't as strong as he should have been, but they had to use him a lot since it wasn't like they had a lot of villains to choose from. As for Captain N: The Game Master, sure it was a little cheesy, but it was cool seeing all those video game characters in one cartoon. Basing a cartoon on a video game is about the same thing as basing a cartoon on a line of toys and there have been plenty of great cartoons based on toys. Finally, ZorakFan can we please due without homosexual references used in that way?

Yes, I do agree that most video game based cartoons (or movies, for that matter), suck. There is, in my opinion, a couple of exceptions. I am one of the ten people that actually enjoys the "Pac-Man" show from the 80's. Also, the "Night Warriors" and "Fatal Fury" animes were really well done.

Only good video game to cartoon/anime was the Fatal Fury movies and the Sonic SatAM series. Everything else is either mediocre or just plain bad.

On my list of good video games turned anime well there's.....
Dragon Warrior!!! (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18510)
Wild ARMs
Darkstalkers
Street Fighter II the Movie
The Fatal Fury Movies
Captain N
Street Fighter II V
And I think that's about it....

You LIKED Captain N? I'd rather watch the American Mega Man/Darkstalkers show from the mid-90's than watch that. And that is pretty bad.

Oh and I forgot Arc the Lad. That's a well done video game to anime series, too.

Actually, I'd take Captain N over the American Mega Man series and American Darkstalkers in a nano-click.
Captain N was a bit wack and wonky at parts, but it had a lot of cool and fun ideas carried off with a nice bit o flare. It gave big ups to Nintendo fans concerning all the games, not just one. Only cool episode Mega Man had was when X showed up. Captain N had it's first episode, the one where he battled through Megaland and fought big-eye and the super fun Zelda Crossovers.
Every video game fan's wet dream!
I haven't checked out Arc the Lad yet... is it really good?

The game or the anime? I haven't played the game, but the anime is pretty good, IMO. Not one of my favorites, but a fun watch. And the fans say that it was a perfect video game to anime transition so I guess that's a big plus, too.
