John Delaney's Sketch of the Week #5

Welcome to "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"! Out of the kindness of his art, John Delaney is doing something big for the fans - an exclusive weekly Toon Zone sketch! Every week, John Delaney will draw up a new picture based on the results of the poll above. That means that *we* fans choose what the picture will be! The contest will begin every Monday, and end at 5pm the following Friday, giving fans a solid five days to choose. You can only vote ONCE ! Delaney will then draw the sketch over the weekend and we'll present at the beginning of the following week. The characters must be DC characters drawn in the Animated style, and if you have any requests for future polls, send me an email with your ideas! Sound good? You can also post your thoughts on the poll in this thread.

Aztek is a character that was created by Grant Morrisson and had a promenent role in JLA for a while. This was, in my opinion, one of the most underrated characters ever to have a comic series and was actually an awesome book to read.

Howdy all,

OK, totally not fair putting STAS Supergirl and the Scarlet Witch in the same poll. Just needed to get that off my chest.

That said, I had to pick the redhead. And because she's cool and underexposed (meaning she doesn't show up and do as much in the comics as she should...get your minds out of the gutter!) and might have a bit of the Zatanna halo effect going for her.

I fully expect by the end of the week that Wanda will have exactly one vote for her (mine), but that's OK. Go for the underdog.

I agree with The Dark Knight, Darkseid is the best choice on there. He would make a very interesting sketch, whereas characters like Supergirl and Nightwing have pretty basic, simple designs. It's important to vote for characters that will make good sketches, and if you dont like it, ey-- tell it to the Pope!

Twilight, I love the Adora picture, and now that you've mentionned it, I am going to ask Harley to put She-Ra on the list as well!

Ok, I guess I can't complain too much with Supergirl currently in the lead, but cmon, people! Vote Darkseid! Hey, even if we only get a tie, we might be able to convince John to do an "in battle" sketch of the two characters!

I just wish I could count on one poll where neither Batman or the female characters won. I know, last week was a tie, but admit it, the only reason Ivy won was because she was female. In fact the only female in the poll, if memory serves...

I also have to ask, why Nightwing? I love Nightwing, too, but his design is so limited it doesn't make for very interesting sketches. John's JL highlights might add some detail, but Nightwing's design might look weird with them on it. Again, I'm not bashing Dick, I loved the character and the design, but I just don't see many possibilities with the sketch. Besides, who cares about Batman-related characters anyway? ;)

Again, VOTE DARKSEID!!!!!! PLEASE! Harley has to be getting tired of my whining! :) Think about it..... Omega Beams..... flaming pits.... boom tubes..... And John's JL highlights are already built in! :D

I feel like singing, don't ask me why! I'm sure Superman will get his sketch pretty soon, it's just that since this whole Delaney/sketching poll only started a few weeks ago, people are much more ravenous to get to see the characters that don't get enough spotlight in the animated style.

Personally, though, I think it would be awesome to see John do a farewell Superman sketch the week of the last "Superman Adventure". I'm really going to miss that title.... :(

I too am sad to see the Superman Adventures go. My all-time favorite work I've done in the animated style was the Superman Adventures "Superman vs Lobo" one shot. If you haven't seen it yet, please pick one up. Mike Manley inked it and he is one of the finest animated style inkers out there. He really gets the thick n thin style down and it was an absolute pleasure to work with him and writer David Micheline. I still enjoy looking at that book today.
So as a farewell gesture to a great comic I would be happy to do a drawing of the Man of Steel as an extra. I'll send it along with this weeks winner of the poll.
But c'mon let's try to avoid a tie, three drawings *whew* ;)

Next week, the final issue of Superman Adventures ships in, and I think it would be great to see Supes win the poll so that John could draw a tribute image. Now, I can tell you're getting tired of not seeing Penguin win, and I would like to help you, but I just feel that it would touching to see Clark fly again...one last time...through Delaney's artwork. Truth is, I've never even voted for Kal-El in this poll, but somehow this feels like something we owe him...a sort of thank you for 66 amazing issues.

Here's what I propose: I'll vote for Penguin in the poll after next weeks' one, and do my best to muster up some support for your cause, and was wondering if you'd do the same for Superman next week. Sound good? That way we all win!

Mr. Delaney, if Nightwing does win, can you please not draw the mullet? I really don't like the Nightwing design on the TNBA show. I'm sure the majority of the people here will agree with me. If he does win, please make him like the comic book version. Now that's a Nightwing that looks cool! :D

Arright, I have to say that the comic book design for Nightwing is a piece of junk. I never have liked it. The design for TNBA is a very good design for animation. It's sleek and stylized, and easily animated. That said, its lack of detail doesn't do much for me in a single sketch. In animation, the design is magic- but it needs some more detail for still sketches... In comparison to the comic book design, the TNBA design looks like gold.

If we have to have Nightwing, I hope John does a TNBA design with added JL highlights. Then again, the highlights could be better kept to a minimum, as Nightiwng's sleek design could be marred by too many highlights.

John- do what you normally do. You seem to have the magic!

What do you mean Darkseid has no chance of catching up? The last poll had 125 total votes, and so far only 97 people have voted. All Darkseid needs is 9 votes, so don't give up.

To try and make things good for everyone, if Nightwing does win, can you at least not put the mullet, but the comic hair, and everything else, if you want, just like the TNBA design. Or, you could make your own version of the Nightwing in this pic:

On a side note, at this point there are 99 votes, if the total climbed up to about the number last week, and The Penguin got most of those votes then he would win. ;) It's very likely but it could happen.

Dude you need to relax! If I come into a thread and there are 4 or 5 pages I don't have time to go back and read them all.So don't contribute to the thread. Wait until you have time. I don't think it's too much to ask. I don't want to be a monster about this, I just think it's frustrating and it shows a lack of respect to all the people who made earlier contributions to the thread. Don't you think?

Now let's all come together in harmony and hoist Darkseid above the rest. If ever there was a week in which Darkseid should triumph, it should be the same week that Superman makes an appearance.

It may surprise you to know that I do read all of the posts in the thread before I add my two cents in. I was unaware that Delaney had agreed to draw an extra Superman picture for us, but I don't think that means I show a lack of respect for anyone. Some newcomers come to these boards and ask questions to which B:TAS provides obvious answers, but we don't bite their heads off. I'd appreciate the same courtesy if I happen to miss one development in this thread... :rolleyes:

As for Darkseid, I posted that comment earlier on in the week, when it seemed he and Supergirl could possibly go head-to-head. I never said that he had more votes. If you think that was a silly comment for me to make it was only because you took it out of context. I'd be more than happy to give Darkseid, and you, my vote in an upcoming poll, but your attitude leaves something to be desired! Preach what you practice man!

That's like looking both ways before crossing the street and still getting hit by a car.

When you posted that, Supergirl's votes doubled Darkseid's, so I don't know how it seemed to you like they might go head-to-head. Well, I finally voted...and I voted for Cap.

1) It would be cool having both Superman & Cap. The two American Superheros, Side by Side..(well, probably one above the other, but maybe Harley could post them side by side)
2) I've said it before, I'll say it again..if I wanted to see Nightwing, Supergirl or Darkseid in the Animated Style...I could watch the show. I personally want to see chracters I've never seen, or rarely seen. I enjoyed the Batman vs Joker, cause it showed them both bloodied & brused, something you wouldn't see on TV. I enjoyed the two Batgirls, especially #2, cause she hadn't been on the show.
The Question, while I didn't vote for him, was another good choice, as he also didn't apear in the show. You see where I'm going with this? John's already doing a Superman sketch, so he's not going to be putting in the time he did for Batman or the Batgals...so why not choose something new. Vote Smart, Vote S-Mart...er Cap.

That he did, but the Joker wasn't the main part of the picture. He was added in (like Penguin in the Nightwing pic) so it doesn't count. And I can only wonder who'll be left in a year...
