Someone w/ a good memory, help me with an old Gambit issue

I need help from anyone who read and remembers or has any of the early issues of Gambit, particularly the one in which he and his cousin are doing some sort of Thieves Guild initiation thing and they run afoul of the blob-looking animal who keeps kids hostage. Remy and his cousin are able to escape the lair, but the cousin drowns. To further clarify, this was the issue in which Gambit starts using cards as his weapon of choice and he puts the blob-monster's eye out. In a later issue, this same blob-thingie wants a little boy mutant who secretes mind-numbing gas, whose sister is part of the Japanese branch of the Thieves' Guild. Gambit saves him and uses the little boy's mind-numbing gas to hypnotize the blob into walking off the cliff.

OK. What I need to know is the cousin's name (It was Etienne, but for some reason, I don't think it was Etienne LeBeau. Could be wrong). I need the specific name of the initiation rite they were doing (Etienne had to steal something and bring it back in order to be annointed a true thief), and I would like the name of the blob thing.
