For me, it was the pilot episode, The Price, and Shadows of the Past. The shading and design work in them are incredible, and the characters consistently look proportional when moving. ;)
While watching them, I couldn't help but wish they got the better animators to do the story arcs. City of Stone, while being a superlative story, suffered from very average animation IMO.
Since I don't have the DVD handy, I can't give any of the later episodes a second look...so I don't remember if The Gathering or Hunter's Moon had any standout episodes visually...

Sending an entire story arc to an A studio like Disney Japan would have been incredibly expensive.

Agree. Would have been happy to have the first and last episode of each arc to be done by Disney Japan..wishful thinking I know, since that's not how they divide up the duties.
I guess the best thing you could say is that the story arcs were at least visually consistent in every episode...consistently average that is

The Mirror had some great animation, it was very well written and set up quiet a few things for later on in the season.

I remember Hunters moon having some dynamite animation. Especially that part where the hunters blow up police headquarters.

I was really impressed with the animation during the Elisa/Special Ops chase in Awakening...I think part 4. But maybe 3.
Also the fight between Xanatos and his son in the Future Tense episode was a fun dip animeish energy fighting.

The one with Hagen and the other dude's ghosts in Scotland, Future Tense, and Reawakening.

Really? You could get past Demona's overly cartoonish gestures for the first half of the episode? =S
