Am I the only one who thinks Superman should've kept the beard?

A friend pointed this out to me and I have to agree it begs the question...

How does a razor work on Superman? Is he invulnerable except for his hair? Would that mean he never needs a haircut either?

That never made sense to me. I mean, how can he shoot his chin with his heat rays? I mean, try to look at your chin. You can't do it.

If I recall correctly, Superman used his heat vision against the mirror and reflected it onto his chin. I can't remember why the mirror didn't melt though.

That's right! I remember that scene now about the heat vision and the mirror. I haven't seen that episode in a long time but it's good the creators were meticulous enough to give us a little glimpse of small things like that.

Yeah, it would be extremely suspicious if superman and kent both showed up with beards at the same time. The only way he could really pull it off was if he wore a fake beard for awhile (like a few months), and then had Kent gradually grow one in after that. Then they would have changed hairstyles at different points. But that's a whole lot of hassle to go through to try out a different hairstyle.

It worked for the episode, but it wasn't a good look for Superman. Plus there's the whole issue of Superman and Clark suddenly deciding to have beards at the same time that opens all sorts of problems for the secret ID thing.

I think in the Byrne Man of Steel run, Superman used a piece of metal from his Kryptonian ship to reflect his heat vision onto his face. What I want to know, though, is how does he trim his hair and cut his nails.

In the pre-Crisis comics, Superman's hair and nails didn't grow at all while under a yellow sun, thus he usually didn't need to shave or trim his nails at all. (One occasion had red kryptonite make his nails and beard grow heavily, requiring Supergirl and Krypto's combined heat vision to cut it off when his own wouldn't suffice).

Post-Crisis (and S:TAS), Supes' hair and nails do grow, requiring him to shave via using his heat vision. The comics had him use a piece of the rocket that brought him to Earth to bounce the heat vision off of; presumably in the "Mxyzpixillated" episode, Supes could've installed some special heat-resistant mirror in his bathroom (or has tons of them in a closet somewhere).

(Imagine the requirement to shave was part of Byrne's "make Supes more vulnerable" makeover.... which apparently came with his showing Supes as looking hairy chested vs. smooth-chested in earlier comics; never liked the hairy-chest look on Supes...).

Superman's hair is invulnerable as is the rest of him, thus ordinary razor blades won't work on him---there's various scenes over the years of Lois or someone trying to cut Superman or Clark's hair with scissors only to see them break in two.

Thanks, Brainatra, that was a very helpful summary of the different takes on Superman's hair. I guess the old Supes was kinda like a Dragonball Z Saiyen, whose hair "supposedly" never changes since birth.
