View Full Version : FOX wants Conan O' Brien?

This is quite a disconcerting article. DON'T DO IT, HAMMER! .. I mean, Conan.

Remember the Keenan Ivory Wayans show? That only lasted 3 weeks..

Hopefully Conan knows that at NBC he has a future, but at FOX, he wouldn't last very long.. and then he wouldn't be able to go back to NBC either. I doubt he'll take the offer.

FOX wants Conan O'Brien to host a late-night talk show, according to TV
Guide. Fox execs are "all over" the 38-year-old O'Brien, whose "Late Night"
deal reportedly ends in September, the magazine quotes an NBC exec.

The TV Guide report that Fox is trying again to push into late-night TV
will be published in its issue on newsstands Monday.

Fox hasn't had a late-night talk show since the expensive "Chevy Chase
Show" crashed and burned in 1993.

Fox, which reportedly settled on Chase after pursuing then-"Late Night"
host David Letterman - who bolted for CBS instead - feels that it's in a
better position now than it was nine years ago.

And it also knows the financial windfall from a successful late night talk
show. CBS' "Late Show," for instance, earned $150 million in ad revenue in
the first nine months of '01.

"We're an infinitely stronger network than we were when we went after
Letterman," a senior Fox exec tells TV Guide. "It's no secret that we want
a piece of the late-night action.

"And CBS has surely shown that the way to get in the game is to pay a lot
of money to somebody who is already a success."

"Negotiations haven't heated up yet, but we know Fox is all over (O'Brien),
" an NBC exec told TV Guide's Max Robins, who dishes about his scoop on
tonight's "Extra."

TV Guide reports that Fox could offer O'Brien far more than the $2 million
a year he's reportedly making at NBC.

And Fox could also offer O'Brien an 11 p.m. timeslot - virtually
guaranteeing him a larger audience than he gets in his current 12:35 a.m.
timeslot on NBC.

"NBC is committed to Jay Leno hosting 'The Tonight Show' for at least four
years," one insider tells TV Guide.

"With us, Conan gets out of the after-midnight ghetto and potentially
(draws) a much larger audience."

O'Brien is at the top of Fox's wish list, but other names being bandied
about are "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart and "Politically Incorrect" host
Bill Maher. Their contracts are up by the end of the year.

Letterman, whose "Late Show" contract reportedly expires in May, is
considered a longshot possibility.

"The Chevy Chase Show" was Fox's second stab at a late-night talk show,
following "The Late Show starring Joan Rivers Show," which aired on Fox
beginning in 1986.

I hope he doesn't, cause I sure as hell don't want Carson on after Leno (although, then I could watch Kilborn...what am I saying!!

I work for an NBC Affiliate, I want him to stay..and..uhh..I work AMs now, so i don't get to watch late night TV anymore (8pm is when I "should" be going to bed...)

Yeah, I remember hearing about those. Big, big flops....

However, I've read some published reports in my local newspaper, Newsday, that FOX may be looking to expand to 11:00 PM. With them recently buying several Chris-Craft O&O, they're considering shifting their local 10:00 PM newscasts to the other FOX O&O, in cities with duopolies (NY included). Not exactly sure if anything has come of this, really...

If Conan's smart he'll stay put. FOX is a deathtrap that swallows TV shows whole.

I don't know why you are all dissin' Fox here. Fox has shown it can compete against a powerhouse like SNL with Mad TV. (and Mad TV is often way better than SNL, IMO.) I agree that they are in a stronger position than they were 9 years ago, but it would take a Letterman or a Leno to really turn it around for them. Conan is popular, I know, but I cannot see him going up against Letterman and Leno. No way. I think Conan has a very good spot where he is at right now.

Personally, I think Conan is WAY funnier than any other talk show host. His monologue and skits usually aren't the best, but his interviews and all the unscripted stuff he does is just hilarious. I've pretty much stopped watching Leno and Letterman. I just stay up and watch Conan nowadays. If he moved to FOX, he'd be taking a risk because they're not as established as NBC, but he would probably get a fresh start with new writers and a wider audience. I don't really care what he does just as long as he stays on the air!

CONAN ROCKS!!!!!!!!!

Why would Conan ever get new writers? That would be as dumb as moving to Fox in the first place.

I agree that Leno isn't as naturally funny as Conan, but you're selling Dave Letterman short. Dave's cleverness clearly shows during interviews, just like Conan and the great Johnny Carson. Leno's humor, on the other hand, relies mostly on his writers and the stupidity of others. But he's pleasant and familiar, so people watch.

I don't think Conan will jump. And it's not because it would be on Fox.
Think about it. Think about Conan's main audience. To whom does he appeal? A good part of his audience are intellectuals in their 20s and 30s who love his style. Now, what other late night show appeals to these same people, and has yet to be mentioned in this thread?
Nightline.
That's why Conan will stay where he is (for now...)

I can't stand Leno and his lack of humour. He's just terrible IMO and lacks the smallest ounce resembling whit. Letterman is allright but doesn't really compare in humour to Conan. Sure these are my opinions and I dunno how they would translate to ratings. I think FOX could do an OK job with him. I mean this is not just a name they are hiring, but an established talk show host and does NBC have another contract waiting for him? Most probably. Still I think as long as he has a show I'm happy.

I love Conan, and I stay up to watch it whenever I can. I can't picture him on any other network, frankly. "Next up on FOX: The Conan O'Brien Show." It justn't doesn't sound right to me. He's a really funny guy, always doing something crazy :p

One advantage I can think of that Conan might have in some markets, such as here, is that there are NBC and CBS affiliates who's news goes til 10:35 (or whatever time zone you are in). Our Fox affiliate ends their news at 10:30. That would give Conan a five minute advantage over Letterman and Leno, which would be very important in the ratings war. Of course, I don't know if that's standard among all the affiliates across the nation. It is in Kansas City, and in Minnesota, too.

NBC Starts the Tonight Show @ 11:35 pm (10:35 central)
Conan Starts @ 12:37am

The Fox affiliates I've heard of, try to do an hour of news between 10-11 (9-10 for us Central stations), giving them a full 1/2 hour Jump time...

Of course, @least in my Market, Fox is barely pulling a 1 rating with the "Fox News at Nine" tagline, 'It's news at nine, at Ten, it's history"

Heh, we kick their ass, it's funny.

If Conan were to get a show, it would have the same Timeslot as MadTV does on Saturday...and, you might find a number of people watching the 1st 1/2 hour of Conan, then switching to Dave of Jay. (Also, that way, you get more jokes, less interviews..w00!)

I hope it doesn't go down, cause I think it'll be bad in the long run for Conan..and might hurt all Late Night.

So that is pretty standard?

I know each Fox affiliate does their news differently. Here, in central time, they have news from 9pm til 10:30pm. At 10:30pm they air syndicated sitcoms, currently Third Rock From the Sun. I think starting Conan a full five minutes before Leno and Letterman would be good, but it would be even better if they had him start a half hour before Leno and Letterman in other markets. At least for the first half hour!
