I've noticed that in a lot of really good anime...actually, just about all of it, there are spots in the credits reserved for the Japanese "Planners" and "Planning Staffs".

My question, of course, is what exactly is a Japanese Planner responsible for. Are they responsible for visual and literary strategy, the look and feel of a project, the way a project is "handled" (i.e. branded), strategic marketing, production values, producing? In other words, what are their responsibilities and what do they do? Anyone here who works in the biz know anything about this position? And more specifically what seperates these positions from their Western counterparts? I've noticed that in anime, they have a different way of crediting staff than Americans do. What I'm asking is what exactly is the difference in what they do? It seems like a very prestigious, mysterious and elusive title, far as Eastern studios go. Figured I'd like to ask considering there are people who work in animation who post here that might know about this, dealing with "localization" and whatnot. Thanks for any insight you people might be able to provide.

I'm hoping it has something to do with the balancing of filler and canon material.
