Class of 3000

Every time a Looney Tunes character broke the fourth wall.

Raimundo: Where have I heard that before? Oh yeah. Previously on Xiaolin Showdown. *Xiaolin warriors give thumbs up to the camera*

I don't really count the shows that do it on a daily basis like Animaniacs and what not, but they still had good ones. The first Slappy episode where Skippy tells her that Doug the Dog is going to beat her up because her old adventures were cartoons and this is "real life", she looks at the camera and says, "Don't tell him. He might crack."

Meowth: I have a pain but I can't say where 'cuz kids watch this show!

An episode of Garfield and Friends where he finds himself in an action scifi cartoon.

Garfield: Garfield Seal of Quality. No giant robots, or annoying little blue people.

In the first episode of FLCL where several charecters are sitting in a screening room commenting on the difficulty of the previous scene.

In the resturant scene of the Family Guy episode "15 Minutes of Shame" Meg angrily shouts at the film crew, they're being filmed for a reality tv show, to shut off the cameras and Chris starts to panic and shout "You're breaking the 4th wall".

In the Family Guy episode "Saving Private Brian",when Stewie shoots and kills the vaudeville guys.

"They're dead, okay? We won't be seeing them anymore."

Two moments from Family Guy come to mind. The first one (can't remember the episode) is where Peter says something negative about television, then realizes what he said, looks at the camera with a smile, and says, "Except for the fine programs on Fox."

In a more recent one, the opening title sequence is altered to feature Peter falling down the steps and lying in pain on the floor. After a few moments, Stewie walks towards the camera, climbs up into frame, and says something like, "Yeah, you might want to go ahead and cut away now."

James: "Rats, we wasted this episode cheering the good guys!"

Team Rocket: "We want to capture Pikachu we hope to do it soon. And when we do we'll be the new stars of this... CARTOON!"

Agreed! I expecially like the ones when one would see a shodow of an audience member get involved. My favorite instance of this comes from "Haor-Raising Hare."

Whiele being chased by the monster, Bugs Bunny stops & asks if there is a doctor in the house. A silhouette pops up at the bottom of the screen and says, "I'm a docior." Bugs pulls out a carrpt amd asks, "Whatus up, Doc?"

It plays funnier than I described it.

I think it's harder to find an episode of Garfield & Friend that didn't break the 4th wall.

"Don't get too attached to him, kids. It's the last time he appears on the show."

I can say the entire first season of Duel Masters alone, broke the wall too many times. Espiecally the Cable Guy episode.

That was due to the english writers of the anime. I'm not sure if the japanese version broke any 4th walls.

Well the original version had episodes that were like 5 or something minutes long, so they stretched it out with crazy gags.

That's what I heard at least.

The original TMNT cartoon had some good examples:

(SHREDDER describes the function of a particular weapon)

KRANG: You don't have to explain it to me- I invented it!

SHREDDER: I wasn't explaining it to you. (points straight at the camera) I was explaining it to them!

---

LEONARDO: Let's go, Turtles- we're the only hope the world has!

RAPHAEL: (aside to audience) Don't you wish you could deliver lines like that with a straight face?

---

DONATELLO: We've got to find that bomb! And we've only got eight minutes to do it!

RAPHAEL: Excuse me; is that including the commercial?

Ed Edd n Eddy did this a number of times.

KEVIN: This show needs subtitles.

---

EDDY: It was all Ed's fault, and Kevin's as usual.

EDD: But Kevin isn't even in this show, Eddy.

---

ED: I remember it as though it were only second season.

They've even devoted an entire episode (One + One = Ed) to deconstructing the world around them.

I liked it when in the first part of the who shot mr burns story in the simpsons Doctor Hibbert said the following

Hibbert:Heh heh heh. Well, I couldn't possibly solve this mystery. Can...you?

Then he points to the camera, as if to suggest he's asking the viewer, however in reality he's asking Wiggum.

Wiggum: Yeah, I'll give it a shot, I mean, you know, it's my job, right?

They did it in that one where Homer gave up beer aswell.

I Love forth wall faux passes.

They did something like that on the "Jimmy/Timmy Power Hour 3" with Sheen doing the exact same thing Hibbert did, only he was talking to Libby.

I'd have to go with another FLCL episode called "Brittle Bullet"

(Haruko is dressed like Elvis, her bass in hand)
Haruko: HARUKO'S MASTER THE GUITAR IN ONE MILI-SECOND CLASS! YEAH!! SIRANAAAAAA!!!
Naota: (While looking back towards the camera) Do you find this difficult to understand?

Haruko then fires an uzi at Naota. Utter insanity.

Then there's another in the next episode called "FLCLimax"
(After the Manga scene is ended by Kamon, everybody is catching their breath)
Kamon: STOP! STOP! STOP! STOP! That's enough now, let's just stay with anime.
Naota: Anime?
Grandpa: That's exhausting!
Kamon: It's hard to be in Manga form! It takes time and it's a lot of work! After the first episode they said not to do the manga thing anymore. But then we get accused of being lazy, right?
Naota: What do you mean "right"? Quit fooling around. It's not cool, you know.

Kamon then calls Naota the main character.

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog did it ever so slightly to tip the audience off when Sonic was disguised. There's also the famous gag from Sonic X which the dub screwed up-

*Sonic is being chased by the Speed Team and ends up jumping on top of their car*
Driver: "Hey, what do ya think ya doing?! You're setting a bad example!"
Sonic, looking directly at camera: "Kids, don't stand on top of moving vehicles!"

Which the dub made "Don't use race cars to chase hegehogs"

'The Emperor's New Groove' included a number of funny fourth-wall-breaking jokes.
My fave was the chase w/ the participants leaving actual red and blue dotted lines on the ground, and the subsequent puzzlement over how the eliminated team reached the lab first.

YZMA: Kronk, how did we get here first?

KRONK: (holding up the dotted-line map) You got me! By all rights, it doesn't make any sense.

Oh yeah, that one's a hoot. "I'm the guy in the third row!"

I also think the 'Candlejack' episode of Freakazoid counts, where Freakazoid basically takes a break in "filming" to go around and schmooze with the crew.

Because we know Japanese parents don't know how to teach their kids that they need cartoons to do it for them. No that was just a joke not a breaking the fourth wall.

Tex Avery will always be the king of breaking the forth wall jokes. Some of my favorties:

Cinderella meets Fella: "Let's go back to the fifth row and stay for the news-real!"

In "Tortise beats Hare" Bugs Bunny walks across the title card and reads all the credits!

In "Daffy Duck and Egghead" Egghead shoots a member of the audience for not sitting down!

Other Favorites:

Ed, Edd, and Eddy: Didn't we win an emmy for that episode?

Garfield and Friends: Anything but one of my favorites is Garfeild interupting "DJ Jon" to warn the audience to never become a DJ
