About a week ago, I walked into a Save-A-Lot and bought a copy of Challenge of the Super Friends: Attack of the Legion of Doom on DVD for just $7 plus tax. They've got a whole tray full of discount DVDs, including Superman: Last Son of Krypton and the Batman-Superman Movie and Justice League: Secret Origins.

Anyway, I finally got around to playing the Challenge DVD tonight. Ah, the memories. Looking back now, yeah, it is a little flimsy in terms of plotting, but because each episode is 20-22 minutes in length, there wasn't much room for real plot development.

The four eps on the DVD:

Wanted: The Super Friends (listed as Wanted: 10 Super Friends on the back cover). 1st episode of the series.

Invasion of the Fearians. 3-headed menace from Venus (!!) recruits the Legion of Doom to reconfigure Earth. Wouldn't be the last time aliens would call upon the Legion.

The Time Trap: The Legion uses a time warp device to steal artifacts from the past. Apache Chief & Aquaman are stuck in prehistoric times, Batman & Robin in ancient Rome, etc.. A pity they didn't try to redo this on JLU.

The Most Dangerous Game: Hawkman, Wonder Woman, & Black Vulcan are lured to a black hole, where a artificial planet of toys awaits.

The single disc DVD also includes comments from writer Jeffrey Scott and video features & fact files on all 13 Legion members. Luthor is in his classic 70's costume, but looking back I've wondered why Captain Cold's face was colored blue, when in the comics he has normal skin tone. I think someone at HB got him confused with Mr. Freeze.

What was lacking? Plot development. All the episodes followed a basic formula, and never deviated. Would it have hurt a little to do something daring once in a while? Like, for example, having Wonder Woman go undercover, posing as Cheetah. They never thought of those things back then, but if the series were produced today, you can bet your bottom dollar they'd try something like that. Problem is, the Cheetah character has changed quite a bit since 1978, and in doing the show today, you could use Zatanna casting a spell, either on Diana or herself, to masquerade as Cheetah.

I think now I realize why they changed formats again after the one season of Challenge. Viewers were bored seeing the same thing over and over, and wanted variety. Of the LOD team, only Lex Luthor would return the following season.

Grade: B.

Yeah, the entire 32 episode 78 season is released in two seperate volumes (The Challenge episodes and the second half hour of the show with the regular five and the Wonder Twins)

The Legendary Superpowers Show and Superpowers Team will see season set releases in 07.

That might explain why the single disc I bought was so cheap. It must've been a sampler to get people to buy into the 2-disc set. That's on my to-do list down the road.

Funny thing is, the Batman and Robin in Rome was used for an Adult Swim lead in. They'd take a clip from a classic cartoon and place some beeps on it to add the illusion of swearing. Examples include:

Batman- We're in deep trouble.
Guard- More trouble than you can imagine.

Batman- Grodd did a masterful job at framing us.

The bumpers had beeping placed over trouble and framing.

My guess is, since "The World's Greatest Superfriends" episodes were based off movies, "Lex Luthor Strikes Back" was more or less "Superman: The Movie" in Superfriend style. The hideout designs as well as Orville Gump (More or less Otis) indicate that.

Although the LOD never posed a *major* threat again, several members continued to appear throughout the rest of the series.

The Legion of Doom returned in a seven minute short episode a few seasons later, but only a few had lines, and it was just Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman & Robin against them.Bizzaro also returned for a solo appearance in that season.

There was a *variation* of Toyman in the Legendary Superpowers season called the Dollmaker, although why it wasn't the Toyman himself I have no idea. Brainac returned for two more appearances with a new robot skeleton type design during the LSP season, and then again in the Superpowers Team season. Lex Luthor showed up a lot in the Legendary Superpowers Season as welll, then made a brief cameo in the first episode of the final season.

Even though Captain Cold never showed up again, another one of Flash's foes, the Mirror Master, appeared in that season as well, although Flash himself was nowhere to be found. The Scarecrow returned during the final season in 'The Fear' with a slight redesign.

Bizarro appeared again with a new design in the Superpowers Team season as Bizzaro #1, who wasn't played as being evil in any way during his final appearance on the show.

Batman & Robin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXq7F0k6Vd0)

Since it is a bumper, btw, I believe it's within rights of posting.

The version of Toyman that appeared on Challenge was already dead in the comics by the time Challenge aired (killed by the original, no less). Since that character was still relatively recent and probably more "super villain" looking than the original Toyman, along with the fact that several Bat Villains couldn't be used due to The New Adventures of Batman, he made the cut.

The Challenge Toyman was one of the more memorable Legion members but since the character was long dead by the time they decided to use him again, the writers created a new character that was more or less the same character to avoid confusion with the original Toyman.

How soon in '07? These cartoons are superhero comedy classics. Especially when you can imagine the Batman & Robin cussfest from that Adult Swim clip.

I wish the DVD had had more of the later episodes. I can tell you, Doomsdaym Superfriends, Rest in Peace, and Conquerors of the Future are a lot more daring [and entertaining] than the ones that you listed. One features three members of the Legion turning evil... well, rogue... Another open's with Batman's funeral... And still another features the Legion of Good.

Probably in the summer. Since the last seasons of JLU & Batman Beyond are coming out. Warner needs to bring the DC-Filmation toons, the '88 Superman, and the remaining Superfriends volumes.

I like to see Volume 3 (the Super Powers episodes) along with Vol. 1 of The New Adventures of Superman or The New Adventures of Batman.
