Just where did Bob Kane get this crazy idea? I know Zorro, and maybe the Count of Monte Cristo (read the book and you'll know why). Any others?

I'd put money on a nightmare involving bats. Bill (not sure of first name) Finger had a big role in the creation of it, but I'm not sure who created the majority of Batman's background. All I know is that Kane was bright enough to put a clause in to make sure his name was associated with the character.

Bob Kane was commisioned by Detective Comics editor Vin Sullivan to come up with another tight wearing character similar to superman. kane went home and began looking through textbooks for inspiration. What really kicked it off were a few sketches that Leonardo Davinci did of some bat-like flying apparatus. Kane drew up a crude sketch of Batman and showed it to his colleague, Bill Finger, for some tips. The original sketch had a red costume with a domino mask and bat-wings, and Finger suggested bat like ears and a black and grey suit. Thanks to Finger, we have batman as he is today.
