View Full Version : "Batman: Vengeance" Video Game Talkback (Spoilers)

Seeing as how the last Batman: Vengeance thread was closed, because it was getting off topic, I figured I would help everyone out and start a thread where people could discuss all aspects of the game, and ask for help if they need it. So go ahead people, discuss.

Just a little note: Keep the thread on-topic. Any posts that veer off topic with either be deleted or split or, and warnings will be issued. This is about the game. About Batman: Vengeance and Batman: Vengeance only. Remember: About the Game. Please, not have this thread degrade into mindless babble like the last one.

That's exactly what the last thread was about...the only thing it veered off to was talking about the game, instead of tips and tricks on the game. I really don't see why it was closed, since it was labeled the "Official Batman: Vengeance thread." And other threads have gone off the exact topic and into a related topic, it happens all the time. Anyway, if someone could tell me how it got off topic, that'd be cool.

If you want to know why the thread was closed, which was a mod decision, please email the moderator of these boards, as we state in the rules. We closed it becuase we had to repeatedly ask it to remain on topic, and it kept going off, so we decided to stop it. Yes, some threads do go off topic, but they manage to swing back on without us stepping in. We had to step in four or rfive times, which is four or five times too many.

Well, I just beat the game. I give it a 7 out of 10. The story was good and the graphics, especially the FMV's, were very good. However the gameplay is not the best in the world. And it's inconsistent, like everything is fairly easy up until Fatty towards the end. Even the bosses after Fatty are easy.
*Spoiler*
The Joker, who is the final boss is too easy in the hand-to-hand combat and the free fall towards the end.
*End Spoiler*
Well, that's my opinion.

On behalf on the other thread (which I'm sadden for it to go) I apologize for not staying on the topic.

i give it a 7 out of 10 too, because it was good, like 2 things were complicated, gas works and the batmobile scene, otherwise it was too easy and too short

Ah, okay. I apologize for openly questioning that.

I think it's a great game- I don't think it was that easy though. It was just about right- there were challenging missions and easy ones, the way there are supposed to be in a game. I give it maybe a 8/10 overall. I wish you could play as Batgirl, or maybe only after you beat the game or something, but that would be sweet.
One thing I wish it had that I'm hoping for in a sequel is a multiplayer in some way, shape or form. I just think that would be sweet, Batman vs. Batgirl vs. Mr. Freeze vs. The Joker. Hehehe.
By the way, I think Bird Boy went a little power mad, shutting down threads at his will, with his newfound mod status! J/k ;)

I think that it was a good game! I also would have liked a few more characters in it; both good and bad guys.
Here's a question for you all: In the first scene of The Bridge, how do you pick up the object on top of the boxes?

It' really hard. First you need to beat up that first guy and climb the box all the way over like you would if you were just doing the mission. You have to glide around the next box onto a small platform, and then again to where the secret envelope is. It's really hard, and took me half an hour, so be patient, you'll get it eventually.

It's actually a code bonus you can use when you have beaten the entire game. There are like 5 envelopes around the game, get them, and get a variety of codes.

I finally got this game (for the GC)! Very cool, I like how it's created in episode style, with the old BTAS style episode name intro's. And all the cut scenes, with the voice acting... very nice.
So I've been playing for a few hours so far and I've just beaten Freeze and started the Poison Ivy ep. How far am I into this game?

I heard people say this game is short..but if you have 5 or 6 other games to keep you switching around, you still aren't done with it yet! lol

It's my only GC game so far. :( Looks like I'm gonna have to pony up for some new ones soon. :D I'm thinking about either Pikmin or Tony Hawk 3, anybody else with any suggestions?

Tony Hawk is great...
and I'm finding Batman:Vengeance to be a PAIN THE BUTT. I got passed that Break-In level, and got to where the
Joker appears and the 2 thugs w/ flame throwers are, and then FINALLY beat them after about 10 tries, and I had about zero health left, and that health box didn't help squat. So I jump down, and I get flamed by ANOTHER guy and Die. And then find out I have to do it all over again! Man was I pissed, so I just shut of my GCN. Then, I realized, I never saved, so I have to do the whole gosh darn thing over again.....
ooooooh. I'm mad...I need to go take a cold shower..I'm steamed....

Ahh, I hated the Gasworks stage! You had to do so much and get so far before one of those checkpoints kicked in. I dont know how many times I had to restart that level.
On another note, I just beat the game like 20 minutes ago. :( There's a bunch of points I didnt get, which I'm going to have to go back and get, but I think this is the fastest I've ever beaten a game. It is a short game. Looks like now, I'm going to have to get a new game. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'm leaning towards Tony Hawk b/c of the replay value. Maybe I'll check out Pikmin later on. I was never a fan of Smash Bros. for 64 though. Too hectic for me. Now... the only problem... $$$ :wakko:

what the replay value of this game is? Because a month ago, the day I got a PS2, I rented it and got through midway in the Mr. Freeze level. I hadn't bought a memory card yet so I couldn't save and didn't want to replay the game to get back to where I left off.
I really liked this game, but I have heard that it is on the short side. So what do you all think? I love BTAS and TNBA, but is this game worth dropping $50 on?
Ah, maybe I'll wait for it to fall into the value bin...

Man, I am really having trouble with the part in the Poison Ivy stage where you have to drive the Batmobile. I have been doing fine so far but this stage is kicking my butt... it's so hard to make all the turns and still keep firing at the getaway car... I drive around for a few minutes chasing after the guy, and then it'll say "Game Over: The stolen car was unharmed and the thug got away" or something to that effect. Can anyone offer any words of wisdom?
Failure
02-08-2002, 12:48 AM
What I did was, when I knew there was a pretty long straight away I'd try to get in as many shots as I could. When I knew there were a bunch of turns coming, I'd just try to acceleerate and focus making the turns first and fire shots only if I could. And then u keep doing that and try to finish him off with the gas bomb at the end.

It is very short, I finished it in 3 days, and I'm not even a good vid game player. ;) It is a very cool game. You can go back to get things you missed, but the replay value is about even with any other type of game that has an ending. For example, say you beat Zelda or Mario and never went back to replay it, then Batman has very little to no replay value. Actually, if it was any game but Batman, I probably would've sold it by now.

It was a good game but it was extremely easy all the way up to the gasworks stage, then it just gets rediculous.

In the gasworks stage, the easiet way to beat it is to avoid as many thugs and boxes as possible. How you ask? Well, it not as simple as I say it but it can be done. When fighting a thug, try to knock it over the edge. This saves you having to totally defeat the thug and saves on batcuffs, batarangs, nets, etc. to keep the thugs defeated. Just leap over the Joker boxes whenever possible. It takes them a little time to start spitting out flames.
Now I have a couple of questions. In the final stage of Plant food, I hear the beeping noise to pick up something. I think it's behind a door, but the game says that it requires a special key. How do I obtain that item?
In the police stage, it;s the same thing all over again. An item is giving off a noise but it's behind a door that requires a special key. Grrrrrrrr.
In the first stage of Infernal Jest, I'm having great difficulty beating those wretched flame-throwing thugs. Thanks for the tip on getting their weapons away w/ batarangs. I still need to know how to beat them without taking too much damage myself. :(
Finally, I cannot seem to be able to save the game! How on earth do I save the game? I don't want to have to keep playing the whole thing over again just to get where I was the last time.

I am sick of the gasworks stage! Please somebody help me. I can find the first two valves easy but I don't know where the third one is. Also where do I go after that?
TimTwoFace
02-11-2002, 04:15 PM
The GASWORKS stage is the toughest one for me. I completed the game a while ago but it was this stage that gave me the most trouble.
The third valve is in the room with four thugs, and all the boxes, where you have to Bat-grapple up onto the catwalks. It's up there somewhere.
Anyway, I personally loved the game - my only complaint is that I wish there were more people in it, both good and bad guys. Catwoman WAS going to be in it originally, but she was taken out on account of lack of space.
Would everyone like UbiSoft to make a sequel? They said they'd love to, and are open to it. Who would you want in it?

Bird_Boy's Walkthrough to "gasworks":
When you start. go straight. Turn left and go up the ladder. Take out the 2 thugs and turn the valve. (If you become low on health, go left [after arriving up the latter], and then down the corridor. a health box will be at the very end).
Go through the door, fight the thug, open the valve.
Now, usually, I'd just go back through the door, make my way back to the beginning, and then open up the 3rd valve.
Then, I found out, where valve 2 is you can just jump down, and you're closer to valve 3...
anyway, shut off valve 3 and go through the door.
kill the two joker boxes, and plan your jump..land on the platform and keep going down. at the end of the platform is a health box.
Go through the next room. the first thug you see (and fight) likes to hug you alot, so try to take him out fast. Make sure you JUMP across..i kept forgetting that and having to start it all over again.
Procede to the next room, making it fast (I'm usually low on health by this point).
Up the slope thingy and in the door. a cut-scene will play. From this point on. If you die..you'll restart here. But do NOT shut off the system...then you'll have the start the level all over again..
Go through each room (each one is a level above the other), moving the valves. Then, go back to where you began, and grapple to the top. follow the directions it gives you. Then another cut-scene will happen and the door across from the valve will open. A thug will come out..this guys a toughie. I barely got past him (my health meter was blaring red by the time I dropped him). Pull on the level in the corner and then another cut scene should appear (I think it does anyway..you might have to go over to the guy in the corner..)
and yeah, i want a sequel...put Robin it this time though, for crying out loud.. :p

Heck, i think the whole Bat-team should be in it! :p
And witness, my best advice for defeating the flame-throwing thugs is to block a lot. After you dis-arm them w/ batarangs, take on one at a time and wait for an opening. Also use special moves whenever possible. Hope that helps! :D

I have been stuck fighting Fatso for longer than I care to remember and I finally pulled out again last night after... well longer than I care to remember. I know how you beat Fatso in that you have to fire a batarang at the rocket before it comes out of the launcher, but is there some secret to get me pased this accursed boss?
A pattern to the rockets? A number of hits? A code? Is Harley involved in this somehow?
Please don't talk about what happens in the game after this (don't want to be spoiled), but...

I really like Batman: Vengeance. I am still stuck on the dumb Police helicopter scene. I'm firing away at the helicopter and it seems to fire at the copter every once in a while. I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong or if I have to wait for it to recharge before I can fire again.
On a side note, I finished Superman: Shadow of Apokolips in like four hours.

Well I played Fatso again on Monday to take a break from working on my paper and I beat him! I was shocked, but I actually finally did it! :)
Then I went on and beat the rest of the game!!
Remember this thread says spoilers on it before continuing.
I really liked the closing scene in Arkham. That was just very well done (even though techincally Freeze doesn't go there last I checked ;) )
I really liked Gordon and Batman on the roof at the end. At first I wondered how Harley's fingerprints could have been on the batarang, but then I remember she was pretending The Joker was dead so there was no way she'd have been running around in the red and black clown outfit. I like how Batman left Gordon in mid-sentence as always.
The ending was cool with Bats standing over the city. I am now officially ready for Batman: Vengeance 2 (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54479) :D

Okay, I've been looking for the Gamecube version of this game for weeks, and appearantly every Microplay and EB near my area that once had it in their display cases for MONTHS suddenly doesnt  So I saw the PC version on sale for around $20, and I figured I'd pick that up instead since a)it's still cheaper than a used GC version and b)all the reviews I read said nothing was omitted and the resolution was even slightly bumped up.
So I finally got around to playing the game yesterday, and...I'm disappointed. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this game, no matter how faithful it may be to the series, seems awfully below par. The character models are nice, but the backgrounds seem bare and untextured, even given that its replicating the simple style of the show. The framerate is just choppy (might be my computer, even though I meet all the requirements).
Most of the early gameplay seemed disappointing too. Controls are clunky, such as using Batman's cape to slow your fall, the camera work is inane, and the fighting system seems rushed - I took a bunch of damage trying to defeat one of the Joker's thugs with a gun. Aiming your bat grapple at certain, pre-determined points highlighted by the vengeance symbol seems kinda silly. And is there a way to use your gadgets outside of 1st person mode?
All in all, I'm very disappointed. It was worth the purchase just to hear the TNBA voice cast (even though the FMV sequences are horribly compressed), but I was expecting more. Are the console versions more polished than this?
The presentation is probably the best part of this game. I would suggest you rent the GC version Captain.
Overall, I found this to be a good but frustrating game. Paticuallary the Batmobile and Gasworks levels. The main problem with it, cape gliding aside, is that you don't feel like YOU are Batman.
In Superman: Shadows Of Apokolips, I felt like Superman, allowing bullets to hit me knowing I could just smack the crap out of them seconds later and recover. In the original Spider-Man for PS1, you could websling about wherever you like. In Vengeance, you can't throw a Batarang without it being needlessly difficult, never mind use your grappling hook, as Batman does and SHOULD be able to.
On a related note, how the hell do you get that envelope on the construction site level, the level before you save Mary? I tried for months and still don't have it.
I'm well  , I tell thee

CaptainJustice, I think EB ripped you off by charging $20. I bought the PC version of the game 2 month's ago from EB as well and it only cost me $5.
I wasn't impressed with this game either. I didn't like the camera. It made things more diffitcult than they had to be. I also didn't like the battle system. One moment you're winning the fight than the next you're losing badly. Plus when there was more than one oppenont on the screen, it became even more diffitcult to win. Over all I didn't like it but it was worth the price I paid for it.

Not sure why I am revisiting this, but the game has been on my mind again lately, so I'll do a write up.
In my opinion, there are only two Batman games out there worth playing: the Gameboy version of "Batman: Return of the Joker," (NOT Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. They are very different. the one I'm talking about goes back to '92 and has nothing to do with the DTV.) and Batman Vengence.
Vengence gets a lot right in terms of presentation and story telling, and really did give me a sense of being a Batman ep, or animated movie.
The gameplay for the most part is fine. Batman jumps and fights the way you want, and it has a pretty good stealth movement system that is useful, especially since it's not the focus of the game like Metal Gear Solid or Splinter Cell.
But the way the gadgets were implemented was not good. Batarangs range from pitiful useless, (It takes a lot of effort to line up a shot to knock machine gun out of the thug's hand, and it usually gives away your position,) or rediculous useful, (Every Boss just about is beaten with them.)
What this game always represented to me was a possibility: That if you take what worked here and rework what didn't, you have the possibility to have a really awesome Batman game. Imagine it: A Batman game where you patrol Gotham, solving mysterious, bringing thugs to justice, and tracking down the Joker or whoever. Actually, something similer to what was done for Spiderman 2 the Video game, only with distinct Batman flavor.
Back to Vengence, Hammil as the Joker makes the game. The little asides he and Harley Quinn toss at each other during the first Batman/Joker battle are priceless! :D

VENGEANCE was a great game; the only drawback it had, in my opinion, was the lack of characters in the game. Those that were presented were great, but I'd like to see more than four villains in a game.
Sin Tzu, same deal - at least you had the option of different heroes to play in that game. I like that game less though, simply because it's more of a brawler than an "RPG", which is what Vengeance SORT OF acts as.
I wish that Ubi-Soft would be given the chance to do one third (and final?) game that features the remaining animated villains that would work well in a video game: Two-Face, Catwoman, Riddler, and Penguin. (Mad Hatter and Ra's al Ghul would be nice, too.) I don't know what the story would be, but these are the most notable people that have yet to be used.

I really like this game, it's my favorite Batman one. I think it gets everything right about Batman. The story is a great one, the charaters and VA's act and sound like they should, they really got the feel of Batman, and they used a simplistic fighting style and gave you all of Batman's gadgets to use at your disposal. Although, I would've like to play as other heroes, although that's on the Sin Tzu game, but I hate that one, it's so repetitive, it's boring. It's not hard, but it gets a bit tough, and it looks pretty good as well. The cinematics were really fun to watch and looked really good. Great Batman game that gives does the series justice.
I beat this game just the other day in a dramatic manner, with just an inch of health remaining. I found the game to be quite fun at times, but at other times it was too easy and other times annoyingly frustrating. The story and voice-acting was great, kinda foreshadowing of Return of the Joker in a cool way ("But dead he's the stuff that nightmares are made of"), and I also liked the title cards that were reminiscient of the original series. But on the other side, only three (four if you count Harley, who you don't even fight) of the villains from Batman's extensive rogue's gallery were present. I found the first boss fight with the Joker to be fun, although most other boss fights were either too easy or frustratingly difficult. I guess in conclusion this is a worthy companion to Batman: The Animated Series that suffers from problems in gameplay, inconsistent difficulty and a lack of villains.

Is there a website selling this for a decent price? The game appears to more or less be out of print as far as newly produced copies.
I'd advise searching some websites to find a decent price. A quick Amazon search (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/103-9483170-1408601?%5Fencoding=UTF8&search-type=ss&index=videogames&field-browse=11846801&field-keywords=Batman%3A%20Vengeance) finds sellers in the marketplace selling used game for under 20 bucks. New ones are mostly being sold like they are the only ones who have it.
I was able to get a used one at a Gamestop for about ten dollars, good deal.
