View Full Version : The Best Comic Book movie EVER (so far)

I've seen people calling Spider-Man 2 the best. I've seen Batman Begins being hailed as the greatest. X2 has been bandied about, as well. To be honest, I think this needs settling, hence this thread. This will concern movies that have graced the silver screen, so no TV movies. Sorry, fans of The Flash.

We'll start off with the Marvel movies, then DC, and then finally the independent comics movies. The poll is open for about two weeks as of this posting, and then we'll move on to the next four movies.

Let the voting begin.

If there's any I've left out (if you want movies like Howard the Duck and Conan the Barbarian included), say so and I'll amend it with a later poll.

Of that bunch... Spider-man 2

I'll take Spiderman. It is my favourite of the four movies.

My favorite is probably Spider-Man 2. It just seemed to capture Spider-Man so perfectly, all of the characters were so true to the spirit of the comics, even if the exact details varied a little bit.

But I'm kind of torn between it and Superman. The first Superman movie was nearly perfect in most ways except for some of the lame humor characters. But the story is spread out into Superman two, which is imperfect in many ways and an inferior film.

I also love Ghost World, even though it's a little different from the books. And I'll admit that Popeye came very close to capturing the original comics, even if it is a less than completely entertaining film.

Just speaking specifically of superheroes, my third favorite would probably be Batman Begins. This was the Batman movie. It was just a shame that the Joker had already been used, because Scarecrow was a little less than compelling. Ra's was great, though.

Fourth favorite is probably X-Men II. The first and third movies are both good but have some bad acting and other flaws. The second is where Bryan Singer really hit the sweet spot, and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is incredible.

Haven't seen any of the Blade movies all the way through, but from what I saw of the first one I don't think I'd rank it very high. Haven't seen Daredevil or Elektra. Haven't seen History of Violence or Road to Perdition.

Didn't like Spawn, Tank Girl, Captain America, the Hulk, or either of the Punisher movies that much. The Hulk was just kind of boring and nonsensical and the Punisher was based on a way too convoluted, impossible to swallow revenge scheme. I did like Thomas Jane and the scene with the Russian, though.

Fantastic Four had potential to be at least mindless fun, but spoiled it by misusing Dr. Doom too much. Actually like Howard the Duck as its own product, although as an adaption of the comic it's not very good.

Uh, can you tell I like comic book movies?

Your poll is quite screwy, by the way. It mentions two Blade movies, but no DC comics movies.

That's not the full poll. I'm doing it in sections to allow, y'know, a bit more discussion about the favourites. Once this poll has closed, I'll move on to another four Marvel movies, then four DC movies... you get the drift.

Basically, this is just the first round.

Out of the four movies, it's Spider-Man, without question. X-Men has iffy pacing, as does Blade, but Blade II is a lot of fun, I just think Spider-Man is a better movie.

Out of those?
Spider-Man.
Of all time?
Arguably, Spider-Man 2.

Of that group, Spider-Man. X-Men wasn't bad, but Spider-Man was just better. Haven't seen the other two.

I'd have trouble deciding between X-Men 2, Spider-Man 2, and Batman Begins. Nothing off of the poll.

If I had to choose from that poll, I'll give it to Spider-Man, hands down.

Just choose your personal favourite out of the four above. Remember, this is only round one.

And it's fun to participate!

Is your poll going to be restricted to superhero movies, or will future selections allow such films as Ghost World, Sin City, Road to Perdition, and A History of Violence?

I would have to agree, Sin City is by far the best comic adaptation I've seen. It didn't hit all the marks of the books, but it caught a lot of them.

All comic book movies will be included eventually, the better ones being judged by which ones got the themes and attitudes of the source material down while still being an entertaining film. I'm just going with Marvel and DC first, since they're the big kahunas.

In my opinion, Batman Begins, Spider-Man, X-Men, X2 and Hellboy were probably the best comic book movies going today.

Superman Returns, X-Men 3 and especially Spider-Man 2 were mediocre at best.

I also thought the Hulk movie was better then a lot of people give it credit for.

I would rank Batman Begins as the best for DC, and Spider-Man 2 closely edging out X-Men 2 for Marvel.

Seriously, The poll should have all of the Marvel movies and let people chose. Not piece meal. But, my fav Marvel film is Spiderman 2.

Out of that list, Spiderman. Really great film with some of th best action sequences ever seen in a comic book film. I didn't like GG too much though...

My favourite comic book film which isn't on that list is a tie between Superman Returns and Superman II The Richard Donner Cut. Both really capture what I like about Superman. Hmmm.... I think I prefer the Superman II The Richard Donner Cut as it was closer to the comics.

I see that you're only doing Marvel movies right now, but why just those four? You could put more Marvel movies into one poll and finish this sometime before the next Presidential election. ;)

My three favorite comic book movies, in no order other than chronological, are Superman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Batman Begins.

It's just the first round! In retrospect, perhaps I should have included as many Marvel films as I could. I'll amend that with the next round. The question is, how far back do you guys want me to go with this? There are some comic book adaptations that go back as far as 1920 (The Mark of Zorro, for anyone curious).

BATMAN RETURNS.

Followed closely by XII - X-Men United.

Out of the poll, Spider-Man.

Top 10:

1. Batman Begins

2. The Crow

3. Spider-Man

4. V For Vendetta

5. Batman

6. The Punisher

7. Fantastic Four

8. Superman Returns

9. X2: X-Men United

10. Batman Returns

Note - I love Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, but it's technically based off a cartoon based off a comic, so just live action stuff for this list.
Also, I hope to add Iron Man and Spider-Man 3 to this list someday.

I voted Spider-Man (2002).

Definitely loved this movie although I enjoyed the sequel even more. X-Men (2000) and Blade were good movies, too. I didn't particularly like Blade 2 that much. It was my least favorite of the Blade Trilogy and my least favorite on this list.

Wasn't Men in Black technically the first Marvel film? (if we're not counting the crappy Cap. America and Fantastic Four movies from the 70's and early 90's).

Men In Black should definently be on a poll somewhere...

Among these choices, I gotta go with Spider-Man...though Blade 2 wins some respect for being the best of the Blade films.

I think I'll request that this topic be closed and start again with some more choices, because as Terminatah said, it could take a while with four movies at a time (especially considering how many movies there are based on independent comics).

Currently, Spider-Man has to be the best comic book movie adaptation. Everything is perfect and fun.

X-men movies, while good, wither need more soul or action (depending on the movie).

First two Batman movies are also preety good, but still feels very Tim Burton.

Superman I and II were just as good, if kind of chessy. But that can be a good thing.

Blade was a good movie, but since I've havn't read the comic, I can't really compare.

I still need to watch Batman Begins, Spiderman 2, and Superman Returns, but from the looks of it, they might be the best of the bunch.

No, Howard the Duck, 1986, or Red Sonja, 1985, was first, depending on how you figure it. Red Sonja first appeared in a Conan comic. Conan is a character from Robert E. Howard and can't rightly be said to be a Marvel property, although the comic did seem to influence the even earlier Conan movie.

The popularity of that lead to a Red Sonja movie, and although there was a character called Red Sonya in a Robert E. Howard story the character as we know her and her ties to Conan originated in the comics. To make it more confusing Arnie was in the Red Sonja movie but he played a character similar to Conan, not Conan. It depends on whether you want to count an ancillary character added to the Howard mythos as the first theatrical Marvel movie or a character with more wholly original origins like Howard the Duck.

Men in Black is not actually based on a Marvel Comic, but a Malibu comic. Marvel acquired the rights when it bought Malibu, but it was not originally published as a Marvel Comic.
