First one for me was The Black Cauldron, waaaaay back in 1985, though my memory of it is pretty fuzzy. I remember seeing The Great Mouse Detective, the following year, much better. (I've only seen five Disney movies in the theater. After those two, I also saw Oliver & Company, The Rescuers Down Under, and Chicken Little.)

The first Disney movie I saw in the theatre was either the Fox and the Hound or the Black Cauldron. The first that I saw and truly remember begining to end was Oliver and Company.

Back when I was really young, my mom took me to see a screening of the 101 Dalmations (which, in retrospect, is kinda odd) and I got scared by all the flashings spots in the OP. Since i started crying, we had to leave the theater. I was scarred for life and I never went into a movie theater again, until I was forced to watch the Lion King in theaters. I had my hands covering my ears the whole time (because I didn't like loud noises), so I didn't really get to enjoy the movie.
And four years after that, I saw a special screening of Tarzan in South Africa, where I finally got over my fear of going to the movies.

I don't really recall my earliest Disney film---- but I do recall seeing Ernest Saves Christmas.

Go figure.

I do however recall seeing a freebie matinee of Snow White.

Snow White 1990 reshowing.

I think I actually saw it before then. It was a local event sponsored by something where they obtained the permission to play a print of the movie.

Maaann it was forever ago.

Oh gosh, I don't even know. It was probably either Cinderella (they did a reshowing in theaters in the 80s) or Oliver and Company. I can remember how crazy the line was to see Oliver. Such long lines!

You really are all "kids," aren't you? My first Disney movie experience was BAMBI in 1956.

I'm not entirely sure. I can remember snips of the earliest films I can recall seeing: "The Care Bears Movie" and "An American Tail" in 1986. Neither are Disney. My preschool somehow showed Bedknobs and Broomsticks in movie reel form, but that wasn't technically in a theater.

I remember going to "Roger Rabbit," but nothing before then under the Disney brand. I might have seen something before then, but I have no memory of what. As for Black Cauldron, I wrote down that I saw it in 1990 under its reissue name "Taran and the Magic Cauldron." And DANG, I sure wish I could remember any of it.....

You're both wrong. Snow White was officially reissued in 1988 I believe. I saw it then too.

First Disney film might've been either "The Fox and the Hound" (1981) or the late 70's re-release of Pinocchio (IIRC what my parents told me; I would've been a preschooler at the time of Pinocchio's 1978 rerelease).

I vaguely remember seeing the 1978 rerelease of PINOCCHIO with my dad. (I was three years old.) The first Disney film I remember seeing when it was ORIGINALLY released was THE FOX AND THE HOUND three years later.

As much as I like DVD, man, I would love to see some of those movies on the big screen again.

By thy side,

Mine was Beauty & The Beast (1991). I still have vague memories of being in the theatre during the scene where Maurice encounters the Beast.

I recently bought the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and it dawned on me that the first Disney movie I saw in theaters was Pirates of Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. All other Disney movies I either saw on VHS or DVD. :D I just couldn't bring myself to ticket counter to ask for a ticket for The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, or Beauty and the Beast.
