Here's the plot synopsis...and it doesn't sound good...
The story starts when Shrek and Fiona return from their honeymoon to find a letter - its Fiona's parents inviting the newlyweds around for dinner, and are unaware of what happened to their daughter.
Also, Columnist Liz Smith also confirmed today that Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy have all signed on for the sequel.

So, it's an animated "Meet the Parents?"
I dunno, it could be good, but... after the originality of the first one, I expected a little more than that.

Same here. I hear this will be geared a bit more to the younger crowd, which totally defeats the "purpose", if you will, of the original. While we won't see this movie for 2 - 4 years, I'm not sur eif I'm really looking forward to it.

Alot can happen in the next 2-4 years. Toy Story 2 started out as a direct to video sequel without much hope and it went on to be polished into a fine gem that out shined the first movie. I have trust in the Dreamworks crew to make a great sequel. If they don't then I will be disappointed, but at least we will still have Shrek.

Hatter calls it an animated Meet the Parents--but I'm thinking Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? for some reason. I mean, suppose the princess' folks are traditional and don't cotton to her being married to a huge green ogre. "Honey, I'm not a racist, but those creatures belong with their own kind! Try to see my position. I want grandkids I can show off to the rest of Fairy-Tale Land!" ;)

...This is terribly scary.
A while ago I mentioned in that 'movie sequels that shoudn't be' thread that making a Shrek 2 would be a pretty bad idea.
I'm having a serious case of deja vu...

What do you expect to happen when you fire the original writers and hire the writers from The Rugrats Movie?
EDIT: I'm not kidding. That's a fact.

Oh, GOOD LORD NO.
What's next, the soundtrack's by O-Town? (on the other hand, I wasn't exacly enamoured with the first movie's soundtrack :p :p :p )

EDIT: I'm not kidding. That's a fact. ARGH! How much bad entertainment news can one person handle in a short period of time? I've just about reached my limit.
Cal’s post gave me hope, but now Shrek 2's gone on the future entertainment scale from "could be good" to "potentially sucktastic." :(
If you'll excuse me I'm just going to stand in the corner and start crying now.

The original writers declined the Shrek 2 job because the studio wanted this story instead of the fairy tale template that so effectively drove Shrek.

...well, isn't that brilliant.
And people wonder why producers should never be allowed to work on a show's story-more than 80% of the time their ideas leave MUCH to be desired.
Notice how I vastly sugarcoated that comment.

lol. And if they knew, wouldn't they try to um...save her?? Frankly all synopsis ideas I've heard so far are just bad and unneccessary. The movie doesn't need a sequal, plain and simple.

Aren't Fiona's parents dead? According to the DVD her parents died and Lord Farquad took their kingdom over.

If Fiona's parents are alive..then why the heck didn't they try getting her out of the castle before hand....
honestly...Shrek 2 is a NO NO. Shrek was such a perfect movie, a sequel would only screw up the franchise. If the plot doesn't change, I'm staying away from this movie at all costs. Why? Cuz it could very well ruin the first one.

Wait... I'm really confused... so if her parents aren't dead, weren't they the ones who locked her up, or was it the person who cast the spell in the first place? How else would she be able to eat and stuff if she was locked there... did they bring her food, or did the Dragon?... wait... what about the prince then? WAIT... *is soo confused right now* They don't need a sequel. It ended, and I really don't want it to have one. Though knowing me I'll end up seeing it anyway.

Given Shrek's success, there is absolutely no possible way Jeffrey Katzenberg would let this movie die without a sequel. It's basically his mission to outdo Disney. Sadly, I think the reason Shrek came out so well is from all the extra tweaking time they got during the delays that ensued after the death of Shrek's original voice, Chris Farley.
As far as the plot of Shrek 2, her parents supposedly don't know she's become an ogre. And neither do the people who haven't seen Shrek, so maybe a mod could add "(Shrek spoilers)" to the title of the thread.

Dude, I don't mean this the wrong way, but if somebody hasn't seen Shrek and are coming here to read about a sequel to a movie they never seen, any spoiler that gets revealed is their own fault. This thread is for people who have seen the movie, no spoiler warnings required.

My sense was that Fiona was the princess of an Ogre kingdom, but put in the tower with piles of fairytale books at an early age. So that'd make the parents ogres as well... Maybe they take issue with Shrek not being royalty?

I don't remember all the specifics, but her entire backstory is detailed in the Shrek DVD.

Here's the story:
It was one of the scenes that made it to storyboards, but never into the final cut. Fiona was ashamed that she wasn't a normal beautiful princess, and I think her parents were too. She found a typical "elderly magical woman", and begged her to cast a spell on her (I think she was originally an ogre). The woman said she had two spells; "happily ever after" or beauty (During the day, I guess). Fiona decided that if she was beautiful, she could make her own happily ever afters.
Maaan...... I had hoped Dreamworks would be the new Disney (Disney before all this DTV and anime-hoarding nonsense), but they're just as bad.

As a rule of note, I'm generally leary of sequels.
And this, more than anything else, proves I'm right. I feel sorry for the SHREK legend now that Rugrats writers are on the story. I feel sorry for the crummy plot. I feel sorry for everything. I mean, here are my guesses:
DONKEY will become annoying even more-but not in a good way. He'll become Timon and Pumbaa in the lion king-a spinoff.
SHREK will lose his old, cynical personality for a "always so good" one. This alone will be a major plot problem.
FIONA will become a lot more self-concious and less funny. Even more a dasmel in distress.
And yet, this movie will do well, just because it's Shrek. How sad. :(

When they say "happily ever after", you'd think that would be the end of it. Apparently they had a sequel in the works even before the movie was released. The success of the movie would determine if the sequel would be a DTV or another theatre run. It's not expected Dreamworks would make a sequel to their most successful movie ever, in their short 5 - 7 life so far. I just can't see how they'd make the sequel work...the premise of the first movie made the movie becuase it was fresh. This seems old hat.
