Episode 1.11: The Freaks Come Out at Night...
Original Air Date: November 25, 2006
Written by Marty Isenberg
Previously on Fast Forward: Thanks to some careful planning (and a bit of luck) Sh'Okanabo manages to smuggle a ship full of "gene-seeds"; to Earth. Afterward, in an attempt to find out what they know about the "Day of Awakening", he attacks the turtles at a run-down movie theater, and takes away some genetic material.
This week on Fast Forward: More details about Sh'Okanabo's plan come to light, as one of the turtles becomes a victim of his gene-seeds.

This episode is absolutely awful.

The episode was pretty interesting with the infections that Leo, Mike, Don, and Splinter received until the very last scene of this episode.
Sunlight? They're cured by sunlight???
What a copout!
Now I know that this show is starting to borrow material from the old CBS seasons where the turtles just happen to find a solution at the very last second.
And they have an old fashioned hot dog stand in the 21st century? Wasn't 20th century food obsolete at this point?

I imagine 20th century food is no longer mainstream, but you can still find it at certain shops.
I bet when Shoko'nobo tries to block out the sun, (flashback to Simpsons 2-parter), it deals with Bishop again.
Nothing too special in this episode, other than moving the plot along a tad.

I didn't love the sunlight copout either, but the ending sort of made it worthwhile. I'm glad that instead of taking this lying down, he's going to try to destroy the sun.

And it didn't?

I didn't watch this ep but the title caught my eye. Any old school hip hop heads catch the reference?

unless your market is unique TMNT FF has been at 9:30 for weeks
they lost the 10:30 slot almost a month back...probably because it was getting destroyed by The Batman on CW.

The only thing saving this series for me is Raphael.
I didn't like this ep, I don't like Sho'kanabo, and I'm not impressed w/ the Dark Turtles. I'd rather have Slash.

Uh TMNT was on at 11am before the change, it was never competing with The Batman.
Of course 4kids now put TMNT in direct competition with Spongebob on Nick and Pokemon on Cartoon Network like idiots, so putting the already low ratings of TMNT against two rating powerhouses is stupidity in itself.

I dunno,
It was nice to see all the Destruction take place, especially on a system with a surround sound setup.....but at least they had a somewhere fun explination as to why the sun was the cause.
I'm thinking... would they actually dosomething that drastic and destroy the sun in a turtles universe? MAybe thats what they mean when FF will take a 'darker' turn in the second half..

Eh, it was decent. The sunlight was a little bit of a copout, but since Sho'kanabo is kind of a living shadow it makes sense.
I feel sorry for Serling, though! He always gets damaged and everyone else just goes on their merry way, without even a thought as to how the poor robot's going to repair himself. I know Serling's more or less comic relief, but letting him sit there looking that pathetic is just mean.

Yeah it was a cop out but they did say certain light waves would be the key to destorying the cells. Overall I thought it was one of the better episodes simply for having SOMEHING to do with an ongoing plot.

Major plot hole: How did Raph know the creature was Shokanabo? He didn't reveal himself the last time they fought, and Bishop thought Shokonabo was a 'bogeyman' of sorts. Either this was trimmed in the editing room (FF seems to be cutting scenes out like crazy), we missed an episode, or the writing staff was out of touch.
I think the 'sunlight is the cure' is meant to refer back to sci-fi classics like war of the worlds and other stories where something simple ends up saving the day, except it wasn't handled very well here. What made it even worse was that the middle of the story was clearly set at night, but the moment Raph busts the truck through the wall, it's broad daylight again outside. for a moment i thought the city was just so deep and buried that some areas would have no contact with sunlight, but now its looking more like a bad editing/colouring choice.
I did like, as sir lemming mentioned, how shokonabo isnt taking this lying down. it'll definitely make the second half of the season more interesting...when 4kids gets around to showing it.
the burping gags i could care less for, and the middle dialogue with raph and cody exploring the basement was weak, otherwise i liked the cloned hot dog vendor bit and some other lines were good as well.

I noticed that to. The same thing happened with Hun. One day they just new who he was.

Interesting, but since Raph fought Shoko'nobo before and heard the name from Bishop, it probably isn't too farfetched to say he just put 2 and 2 together.
That's how I figure it, anyway. Raph is a hothead but he's streetsmart. ;)
Still, the whole name thing seemed to be an important plot point in both Bishop to Knight and Night of Sh'Okanabo, so to see it dismissed in this matter is puzzling, to say the least. One would think, for example, that if the turtles have learned of Sh'Okanabo's not-mythical status, they would have informed President Bishop of that fact, which itself not an unimportant detail. Overall, its very distracting, and when taken in conjuction with the sloppy details, made what could have been a good episode into merely-decent territory.
Aside from that, it was a decent episode, althought not nearly as good as other recent ones. While some may see the sunlight solution as a cop-out, the fact that it occured during the field test and not the Day of Awakening itself makes for an interesting development.
As for Sh'Okanabo's motivations, its nice to see something somewhat outside the norm; biological imperative isn't usually used for villains as calculating as he is, so it'll be nice to see where it'll all go from here. His personality still needs work, however; he keeps shifting from "calculating" (his plan to smuggle the gene eggs; testing the gene-seeds) to "stock villain" (revealing too much information to his enemies), and it's very jarring. I'd really like to see what happens when he teams up with Darius Dun, thought, particularly as it pertains to his desire to infiltrate O'Neil Tech.

So is there some history that says the Turtles' dark clones have to be purple? I know the actual dark turtles are multiple colours, but these guys reminded me of the evil clones from the Genesis version of Tournament Fighters. Just wondering if the comics/archie series ever did anything like this to set precedent.

Why not just throw Ace Duck and Mutagen Man into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fast Forward already? This show is teeming with so much goofy stuff that the next thing you'll know, they'll have the turtles singing "Coming out of our Shells" by the season finale.

Freak'n Mutagen man still weirds me out. And Laird hated where the old show went remember? No more mutants of the week for TMNT and I prefer it as such. An Ace Duck homage would be pretty neat though as he didn't even get notable screen time on the old show.

With the way the season has been going so far, it makes me wonder if Laird still has creative control over this show anymore?

So we go from some fun at a 21st Century hot dog stand to the Turtles suddenly turning into monsters. Hmmm...
I thought it was an okay episode. I was baffled by the whole 'the best solution is the simplest one,' aka, the sunlight, being the solution to curing everyone as well. I thought it was already day to begin with, but maybe I'm not remembering it right.
Would Sh'okanabo really go so far as to destroy the sun? Would make for an interesting show if he actually ends up succeeding...
