Anyone have any suggestions for a Batfan on tradepaperbacks to pick up? I have only recently started reading comics again, and am not sure what to buy. It doesn't necesarily have to be Batman themed, but that's my favorite comic book character, and what i am most interested in. lata

If you haven't read them already, get "No Mans Land"
Wow.

The Killing Joker is a must have, closely followed by The Long Halloween.

Depends on which version of Batman you like more.
If you like the lighter side of Batman, I'd say go with any of the collected volumes of the animated style comics.
If you like a little bit darker version, oyu should check out Batman: Year One, The Killing Joke, A Death In The Family, The Dark Knight Returns (and currently coming out, DK2), any of the "Demon" books (Son of the Demon, Bride of the Demon, etc), Long Halloween and Dark Victory, and some of the TPB collections of recent storylines like No Man's Land.

Do any of the trade paperbacks feature Ra's Al Ghul?

Here's my personal faves...
The Killing Joke ~ a must-have...the story that got me into comics.
The Long Halloween ~ One of the best bat-comics ever...Loeb and Sale together are great.
The War on Crime ~ Alex Ross has to be the best artist around.
Year One ~ Definitely a must-have.
The Dark Knight Returns ~ Same as Year One.

Arkham Asylum does a very good job in bringing about the twisted world inside the walls of that asylum. The comic features breathtaking art by Dave McKean and an unrelentless story by Grant Morrison. A stunning read.
