During the "smoke out" gag segment on letterman's show tonight, they used two separate tracks from the Robotech soundtrack.

The first is the slow, instrumental version of "To be in love" the other was a more festive tune usually played during Minmei concerts.

if you're in a later time zone than me, you might be able to catch it.

Was this deliberate? Since it's 2 tracks, I'd have to say the music choice might be one fan trying to spread his fandom out, hoping some other geek would notice. I doubt it's just a "roylaty free coincidiece". Is the Robotech OST royalty free?

I doubt that since Harmony Gold has used it for their previous Robotech rereleases and games. If it somehow is, then I can finally use the soundtrack in my portfolio legaly. :anime:

Roy Focker's Theme song is my ringtone and my wake up alarm.

The great thing about the Robotech soundtrack for me is there is atleast one song you can use for any theme you come up with.

I wouldn't know, but it's not the first time I've heard a anime/game soundtrack used for this type of stuff. Just last night I believe on Sportzone, I heard a football player profile using the Metal Gear Solid theme, and back in '98 I remember hearing Transformers 'Escape' being used for another football player profile.

Not much connection, but there was some staffer on Conan O'Brien who once talked about being a Robotech fan.

In something of a reverse situation, I remember having a good laugh during a scene from Sailor Moon where they were watching some kind of Godzilla movie and the music playing was CNN's "The Trial of OJ Simpson" theme.

They've used a fair amount of anime music on Iron Chef. Yoko Kanno, in particular. I remember during one of the specials, they were using Turn A Gundam background music.

Lawsuit waiting to happen??

Heh, it would be ironic if Yoko Kanno sued someone over using her music when there has been a lot written about how some of her music seems to have been 'taken' from other artists...

Sorry for bumping this, but apparently, more Robotech music has been used in Letterman. And this time I have a link (http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/01/13/worlds-worst-wingnuts-and-klingons-in-the-white-house/)
Youll have to sit thru some other dudes trying to push their agenda on you, but the clip comes right after the "Klingons in the white house" bit.

Well, they probably just have both licensed the same music library. But it's still funny. ;)

s the Robotech OST royalty free?

Almost certainly no.

Back in my TV news days, it went something like this:
The broadcaster pays a yearly fee to ASCAP/BMI. This allows broadcaster to use copyrighted music in snippets of 15 seconds or less (or so it was at the time). If you use longer portions, you have to fill out a report of the program listing the music used, including the track name/number and cat# of the CD/Album and the number of seconds it ran. Then your company's bean counters get a quarterly bill or something.

Either way, the music owners and artists get their slice of the pie.

Heard another Robotech chime in one of their Al Gore segments. It's really funny that it's become the music source for their segments, but who can argue? It's one of the few old dubs with actually GOOD changes music.

Hey, the original Macross series had AWESOME music.

But Robotech had some really good music as well.
