Coming february 6 according to Animatedbliss.com (http://www.animatedbliss.com/DVD/details.asp?title=The+Last+Unicorn:+25th+Anniversary+Edition).
The last unicorn was THE movie of my childhood. My grandmother had a tape of it and I'd watch it every time I visited her. Good thing I didn't buy the cheap fullscreen edition that came out in 2004. That movie is so beautiful, don't cut off half the picture!

I think this film was originally shown fullscreen anyway. I'm not sure a widescreen version exists since this was a TV movie (I believe).
But this film definitely needed some remastering.

Actually, this film had a theatrical release (The New York Times showed it along its theatrical billings). Note in fullscreen versions that the credit sequences are squeezed and stretched to keep the titles from getting cropped (as well as the oval-shaped moon).

Indeed. I have in my possession the German R2 PAL DVD, Das Leztze Einhorn, which was for years the only way to see the movie in the widescreen and 5.1 surround sound for which it was intended. (There are also rips of this DVD into AVI form floating around out there; you can tell because they have the Das Leztze Einhorn title card.) Thank goodness for computers which are only too happy to take care of region-unlocking and PAL for you. (Plus, as an added bonus, you could flip over to the German audio track and hear Christopher Lee still performing the part of King Haggard.)
I'm quite excited to learn that a decent R1 version of this movie is finally coming out. I've already placed my pre-order at DeepDiscountDVD (http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=LGE020423). Hopefully Peter S. Beagle will actually get some money (www.conlanpress.com/youcanhelp/) out of this one.

I grew up with this film on HBO or Cinemax. I'm wondering was this movie made in Germany or is it American made?

It was actually made (that is, animated) in Japan, by Topcraft, who would later form the core of Studio Ghibli. The animation was contracted out by Rankin & Bass, the production company who created the film.
For whatever reason, it proved to be a very popular film in Germany, where it has come to be aired on TV as a Christmas special. (This explains why the slipcover of the German DVD is done up in a Christmas gift motif.)

I see, I had heard somewhere it was a German film. Cool.

I'd just like to bring people's attention to this bit of news (http://www.conlanpress.com/html/news.html): If you purchase the DVD of The Last Unicorn via Conlan Press, Peter S. Beagle's current publisher, you're helping to support Beagle himself, who really needs the money (especially since the fight is still ongoing to get the distributors of the movie to cough up the money they owe Peter from all the prior home video editions). Also, for an additional $10 over the cost of the DVD, Beagle will personally autograph it in three places.
So if you've already got it pre-ordered elsewhere, cancel it. It might be a couple bucks more from Conlan, but over half the purchase price is going direct to Peter.
