Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo Release Details (2006-11-15 09:51:31)
Illumitoon's Charlotte Black has confirmed to ANN that their release of Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo will include an uncut version of the Phuuz Entertainment dub that is airing on Cartoon Network, as well as the original Japanese language track. The series is "initially planned" for a January release

SEXXXXXY BEEEEEEAM!

Awesome. Sure Bobobo has a pretty good dub, but there's nothing like the Japanese version.

And there was much rejoicing in the Bo~BoBo community.

Suddenly went from a "most likely will get" to a "must buy on release day" item for me. Kudos to Illumitoon for not alienating their base on one of their early releases.

Suddenly went from a "avoid at all costs" to "will rent for sure, and most likely buy" item for me.

I'm not a Bobobo fan at all, but the mere fact that the bilingualism was in doubt but is now happening is enough to make me want to buy the first couple volumes and check out the original (and hopefully better) Japanese version.

Hell, because it's a new company (Illumitoon) doing an uncut Toei release (which isn't something to take for granted) means I'll definitely be buying at least the first volume for sure.

Illumitoon is definitely taking a step in the right direction. Now if Beet and BT'X get the same treatment in addition to all their other properties, they're going to wind up as one of my favorite anime companies. :)

However, I need to see how the job will be done on the actual DVDs. Hopefully there will be a true sub and no dubtitles.

Never heard of Illumitoon, but it was obvious we were going to get Dual languages since the words Viz and 4Kids were not in the licensing news.

The uncut version of the Phuuz dub should be interesting. Richard Epcar put together a really great script for the English dub, in as much as it was very funny in English (unlike a lot of anime comedies,) so to see what was too much for TV could be even better. Meanwhile, Illumitoon continues to prove even before they've dropped a single disc they are committed to pleasing fans. You can really tell this company is run by ex-FUNi people - they know what fans want, and that's Japanese audio with subs.

So they're doing an uncut english as well as an uncut JP?

Uncut probably doesn't mean unlocalized. It just means any scenes that had been omitted previously will be put back in, and if there was any jokes or language that was too salty for Toonami, they might also turn back up. It doesn't sound like a redub with a straight script at the very least (which is good because the rewrites help that show flow in English.)

Just wondering, how unfaithful to the original is the dub?

The Japanese version is full of jokes and references that won't translate to English, so they have to improvise.....a LOT.

Yeah, I figured as much... So they basically made their own script that's totally different from the original's script?

The basic structure and plot are intact, but when the references or humor doesn't function in English or makes no sense to a western audience, it's reworked.

Uncut and billingual? Well then Illumitoon, you had a customer before but now you've got a customer that can't freak'n wait for your releases. Good show.

Here's hoping they can make a good sub track for the Japanese version but boy howdy that'll be tough.
