View Full Version : Would Family Guy still be funny without the 1980s pop culture humour

If there is one thing that Family Guy has relied on since the start it's 1980s pop culture humour/references.
I was thinking, would Family Guy still be funny/worth watching if they did rely on them?

Oh, definitely. Not every cutaway or joke is about '80s pop culture references, like the haters would have you believe.

What haters?

Some people hate Family Guy, and use that "fact" as one of their arguments for their perception of hate. IMO, FG uses pop culture references from all over the time-spectrum. If anything, they have more 90s jokes than anything.

I tihnk Family Guy would still be great without them. They would find ways to fill in the time without the references. It might be better without certain ones because some are just awkward like the Penelope Cruz/Lara Flynn Boyle/Minnie Driver style jokes they've done which aren't that funny, just weird. Well, ok, I did like Penelope Crux being fed the carrot but the Minnie Driver thing from the latest episode was stupid and the Lara Flynn Boyle body heat thing was really weird.

Family Guy doesn't have 80's pop culture humour, it just has references to the 80's. The actual "humour" in said references is often one of the following...
a) two characters from the referenced show/movie have an awkward, uncomfortable conversation about a touchy topic
b) a straight re-enactment with an FG character in one of the main roles
c) a FG character interferes with the show/movie at a well-known scene
d) the scene goes on for way too long, and that's supposed to be funny
I didn't mind when this happened much in Seasons 1-3 too much, as it was fairly infrequent, albeit predictable. It happens pretty much every 30 seconds in Season 4+ though. That's why American Dad is better!;)

Family guy uses satire, big deal it is mostly current stuff to.

Well no one liked the Vaudeville guys, Olie Williams, the overlong gags (Peter's hurt leg, the caveman argument from the episode "Jungle Love", etc)

There are LOTS of people who dislike Family Guy.

I think because the creators themselves are children of the 80's, and most of the demographic is as well. Some are younger, but they have references that are current as well.

I like Ollie and the overlong gags. Peter's hurt leg has always been one of my favorites and I've never understood the hate for "Jungle Love", which I liked, including the caveman argument.
