View Full Version : How nerdy are you with your collections?

Books, comics, video games, DVDs...

Come on, do you have them sorted in a special way that you really don't like admitting to?

Are your DVDs by genre? Are your books In alphabetical order (by author)? Do you wince when someone shifts a graphic novel into the wrong slot on your shelve? Do you grumble when your shelf has no room and your collection has to slightly overspil onto another shelf?

Come on nerds. Time to 'fess to uncle Jimmy.

I sort my action figures and toys by the type of toys they are (Star Wars, Matchbox/Hot Wheels, Toy Story, etc.), but I think that's pretty normal.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I divide my season box sets (Space Ghost sets together, Samurai Jack sets together, etc) and I have all of my sequels right next to the original with both books and movies.

Simpsons DVD sets stay in box, the minicases for Family Guy and Futurama are seperate, however the Pee-Wee sets are in their boxes for some reason.

The closest thing I can think of is how I arrange my music CDs.

There's two parts to this. Artists are first arranged in alphabetical order, and then the albums of said artists are arranged in cronological order. It would work something like this:

-The Beatles-> Rubber Soul
V
Revolver
V
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
V
-Elvis Costello -> My Aim Is True
V
This Year's Model
V
Armed Forces

I don't give as much thought to too much else I own.

Similarly to Pedro, I'm pretty into how I sort discs. I sort by genre, then alphabetically. Of course, most genres are self-made [chick music, skater, 90s...]. It's just easier that way. Otherwise, much of it would be in one genre... alternative. >_<

Also, what books I actually have on shelves are separated by fiction and non-fiction, and then sorted alphabetically by... *checks* by author surname. Manga is alphabetically by title.

I sort my books by series, author and publisher

I sort my DVDs by animation, anime, and live action

I sort my videogames by system

I sort my robots by series and faction

Good lord. My CD collection is catalogued by how-far-my-arm-can-reach-pile. They are then shunted into the catalogue protocal called ram-them-in-the-rack.

Occasionally, I'll attempt to place my Faith No More in order, or Rocket from the Crypt, but alas I'll play one, then another CD, and they'll be mixed up on return. It's a never ending battle with apathy.

I must admit, while not perfect, my DVDs are normally arranged in series, but beyond that no order. And books, I would LOVE to have them in author, and they ALMOST are, but again, it's a battle against apathy I can never QUITE win...

Unfortunately my cataloguing is in order of "most recent stuff on top of the pile" in a sort of chaos/order. But if I ever organized them I'd have no idea where they're at.

As my apartment is going to become Brian's and my apartment shortly, we've been buying some furniture and moving some things around. I've got all of my video game systems stashed one small TV table that has 3 shelves (not including the very top). NES, SNES, PSone, N64, Dreamcast, Gamecube, PS2, replacement genesis (on the way). Once I had everything hooked back up again, Brian looked on in amazement and fright (at least, I like to think so) and said, "Damn, woman."

Equally frightening is my list of games. But that's for another day.

I definently keep "like items" together. All my "on card" action figures are one shelf, with my "off card" ones standing infront of them typically.

Near by I have my DVD rack with all my TMNT 2K3 single DVDs on one row, my GCN cases, DS cases and some animated DVD cases on the next row and my box sets on top of that row. Currently I also have most of my DVDs out of their boxes and in a single CD/DVD case which are of course grouped by "like items" as well as not to be confusing when I'm looking through them. It also helps me keep track of everything. On another shelf I keep all my Shonen JUMP magazines for every year prior to the current one. On the shelf above that I have the current year JUMP magazines and my graphic novels ranged by series. I don't typically alphebitze them though.

My motto is there's a case for everything and everything should be in it's case. My portable gaming systems, accesories and software all have cases I keep them in besides the boxes they came in and I tend to update what I have for keeping them organized and protected whenever something else catches my eye.

My console gaming stuff usually isn't very organized because I move my GCN all the time and take it with me various places. So it's often just in a bag on the floor with my GCN disc case/s (I've got two, one with the games I always want with me and one with games I probably wont play and don't often take with me). I tend to bring my 4 player games with me everywhere I bring my GCN. My N64, SNES and Genesis games are in plastic bins on a rolling compartment along with some controllers and other video game related items while my 50+ NES game collection is in a wicker box. They aren't organized per say but I try to keep it so I can see all the titles for the games when I look into the box. When I have all my consoles hooked I tend to leave the GCN on a table next to the TV while my SNES and NES share one shelf and my Genesis is on another one next to it. Things were kinda cramped when I had a PS2 as well so it ended up on the table or on a little stand on the floor rather than on a shelf.

The Taco bell / burger king / pizza hut Starwars Collectables
I got 3 of each One to play with One for display and one for NRFB.

I Typically get at least 2 of stuff I collect so I can open one and leave one in the box.

Like my Reincarnation Cards. The first edition first printing is out.
So I got 2 sets. One to open and One to keep sealed.

I have a storage unit that is full of NRFB stuff !! If I had sense I would get rid of the stuff and save on the storage costs but I do not care! It is an investment to me!

My albums have always been alphbatized, and I also did that with the DVD collection.

I always seemed to buy CDs too often to organize them but now with computers I have everything encoded into the Harddrive for at the fingertip access. so that helped organize things.

When I start a collection I want to finnish it. I bought so many cards to finnish my Desert Storm card set I can almost make up 3 sets.

I started collecting Yu Yu hackisho[sp?] spirit detective cards but every time I got close they would just start printing more so I gave up.. seemed to be no end in sight.

I am SO nerdy with collecting rocks that I start explaining facts to other people about how they formed, where they come from, ect.

I'm starting to collect the TV shows I like to watch on DVD now. So far I got TaleSpin, Darkwing Duck, Kim Possible, and since I haven't seen the Aladdin tv series on DVD I'm recording that on tape. All I got left to get are Ducktales, Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, 5-7th seasons of MacGyver, Teen Titans, and Code Lyoko.

I am a conflicted collector

All of my action figures are out in the shed somewhat exposed to the elements, my 2000+ comics are in boxes with quite a few out of their slip covers. But at least I'm trying to catalogue everything, particularly my massive pile of unlabeled DVD recordings (...just so I can tell what to record and what not to.) Spreadsheet checklists are great.

I have a collection of books, captain underpants. Since he doesn't update all I collect now is comic books and stuff.

My collection just sortof happen. nothing really ever gets put away so I I don't have to remember where anything is. My DVD's are all around so as I see them I think, "Ooo, I'll watch this one". My saved VCR tapes are in worse state as few are labeled. Flamingos (An inside joke with Sis.) hang from every usable suspension point and goats are are on the shelves. (Inside joke with Mom) Now my show figures are scattered around my comp as I tend to fuss with them as web pages load.

Rocks? I used to collect rocks. We probably would have gotten along great back then.

My comics are organized so far by either titles or the lead character (I have one box that has a majority of Spider-Man comics from 1996-1998 for instance).

My Marvel Essentials organized by title, volume number and by complete single volumes. For instance:

The Essential Savage She-Hulk
The Essential Human Torch
The Essential Silver Surfer Volume 1
The Essential Ant-Man

My DVDs are somewhat in order.

I've got my anime boxsets on the top shelf, in alphabetical order. The next two shelves consist of single anime DVDs placed in alphabetical order. After that theres a short row of animated movies and live action movies in no particular order. From then on its just a mess of old VHS tapes, broken CD cases, and old Disney VHS movies. The only DVDs that are out of place in the house are my Avatar and M*A*S*H DVDs which are currently sharing shelf space with some manga.

Everything in my room however, makes a bit more sense. All my action figures are group together by series all over different shelves in my room.

My manga is pretty interesting. Its arranged alphabetically but all series that I only have one volume of share that shelf space with the Avatar and M*A*S*H DVDs.

Until I rearranged my wallscrolls I had entire wall and a half dedicated to Fullmetal Alchemist. With all my wallscrolls, figures, and every other FMA trinket I owned on a shelf somewhere against that wall.

My video games have a lovely arrangement. All over the house.
