Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter in Guilty Pleasures #1 by Laurell K. Hamilton & Stacie M. Richie, & Brett Booth In a world where Vampires, Zombies, and Werewolves have been declared legal citizens of the United States, Anita Blake is an "animator" - a profession that involves raising the dead for mourning relatives. But Anita is also known as a fearsome hunter of criminal vampires, and she's often employed to investigate cases that are far too much for conventional police. But as Anita gains the attention of the vampire masters of her hometown of St. Louis, she also risks revealing an intriguing secret about herself - the source of her unusual strength and power. COVER A-32pgs, FC (1 of 6) 2.99

Just wondering if anyone got this? It was sold out for me. I had to order it on Ebay.

I picked it up and before I state my thoughts I should warn that I used to be a huge Anita Blake fan back in the day. First off the translation text and dialogue wise was excellent and obviously done by someone who had a love for the matieral. As for the artwork, while pretty it was not how I envisioned certain characters looking. In my opinion Anita looked too sexpottish and skinny and as for the two major vampires Jean Claude and red-haired one well they were practically identical save for hair color.

Other than that art was great, nice touches with the shot of Anita's room full of penguins and Willie looked like a slimeball as he's supposed to. (And I love the promo art of Anita in a Zombies are cool T-Shirt) For the record I got the cool cover featured above with Anita in a graveyard surrounded by assorted ghosts and goblins not the (In my opinion) horrible Anita the gunslinger cover. If I hadn't already read the novels I would probably pick this up monthly but since I have I can appreciate it that its an excellent translation despite my gripes about certain characters not jiving with my perceptions of them. I hope it does well though as I am in interested in seeing how this artist envisions some of the characters who appear in later novels...

Okay, ever since I heard Marvel was going to publish this line of books, I've been scratching my head, and so maybe somebody can explain this to me:

Who are these "Dabal Brothers"? Are they real life people or is that just the name for a line of books, (and are they fictional characters in the books)?

Is this comic, (and the other comics under this imprint) NEW adventures of this "Anita Blake" person? Or is this a straight adaptation of an Anita Blake novel?

Were these comics published for a different company before Marvel got the rights to them? Or is this the Dabal Brothers first attempt at making comic books? Because it appears these comics are going to be coming out pretty fast, (it's like the Dabal brothers have some experience in comics, not just in novels)...

My understanding is the Dabal Brothers are a company with various artists and appear to have the licensces for adapating tons of novels if the ad at the back of this issue is any indication. To my knowledge the Anita Blake novels have never been adapted to the comic book medium before. Guilty Pleasures is a comic adaptation of the first novel in the Anita Blake series. (I believe the novels are up to #10 or #11) If your interest is perked I wholeheartedly reccomend picking it up to give it a skim and if it perks your interest go pick up the novel or just wait for the inevitable trade.

The Dabel Brothers (http://www.dabelbrothers.com/). They are real people, and real brothers (http://www.dabelbrothers.com/about/about.html) -- apparently 5 of them, though I thought it was only 2.

They used to be affiliated with Alias Comics, and were the first high-profile bail out from that company, which was the first indicator that it was really in trouble (well, second -- pushing a launch of about 12 release titles in one month and only managing to ship one was probably the first sign). They may have even signed something with CrossGen or Speakeasy or one or more of the other recent high-profile comic company flameouts before landing with Marvel.

I think they used to publish original material, but have since gone the way of licensing the heck out of other properties, from Orson Scott Card's Alvin Maker to Dungeons and Dragons fantasy comics that bear only a TOTALLY COINCIDENTAL RESEMBLANCE to Dungeons and Dragons ;) to Anita Blake. The thing I remember them best for was a series of Dragonlance comics that had a sizeable fandom before getting pulled mid-story due to licensing issues.

Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter in Guilty Pleasures #2 by Laurell K. Hamilton & Stacie M. Richie, & Brett Booth Anita escapes the powerful vampire Aubrey, but finds herself in a world of hurt. Unbeknownst to Anita, Jean-Claude transfers some of his stamina to her to help her heal more quickly, effectively making her immune to his powers. He and Aubrey take Anita to see the city's master vampire, Nikolaos, but as Anita waits to see the master, she finds herself attacked by another creature of the night - a were-rat that hungers for human blood. Cover by Brett Booth
Writers: Laurell K. Hamilton and Stacie M. Richie
Pencils by Brett Booth

The Story:
Anita Blake has faced great horrors in her career as a vampire hunter and an animator of the undead, but being left in a dungeon with an army of were-rats is hardly her idea of a good time. Fortunately, she is able to escape when her vampire hosts intercede, but her good luck seems short-lived when she is brought before Nikolaos, the master vampire of St. Louis. What Nikolaos wants is unclear, but one thing is certain - even an experienced vampire hunter like Anita cannot stand against a being as powerful as this! But can she survive the night?

Comments? What are your thoughts?!?
