View Full Version : Color Bars
Tainted Blood

I caught the episode of AquaTeens last week (I think it was last week. wasn't this week, that's for sure.) The color bar representation of d*cks was brilliant. Anyone else work in television? haha. Bars & Tone. I'm guessing that since tone is used to censor profanity audioly (did I just make that word up, or what?) that color bars are the logical way to censor things visually. Brilliant.

Eh, I think it sould be okay, because he's talking about their method of censorship, not the episode itself.

He does? I thought his post count just went back to zero when his first thread was deleted and this had always been his screen name. Apparently not.

Way to welcome Tainted Blood to the boards. :p BTW, welcome!
On that note, I'm pretty sure it's okay to talk about censorship if the show has no uncensored version. So any AS originals we can discuss what was censored and how, we just can't talk about what COULD have been censored. The ***** were censored (as Tainted Blood pointed out, quite cleverly) and thus that is not the rule he broke, if he had in fact broken any rule, which he didn't.
***** suck anyway. Good riddance. :(
EDIT: Wait, "dick" isn't censored but the plural form is? Do two ***** have a higher maturity level than one? This is probably in the FAQ, I should go read that again.

It's to avoid an implosion of awesomeness. Do you think Dick Clark and Dick Grayson could exist in the same room? No. That would be too much Dick to handle. And even more, well, that would destroy the universe. Therefore, only one Dick is acceptable. More than one Dick is not.

EDIT: Wait, "dick" isn't censored but the plural form is? Do two ***** have a higher maturity level than one? This is probably in the FAQ, I should go read that again.I believe it is because of the name Dick. If it was censored on Toon Zone, there would be a whole lot of posts in the DCAU Board saying **** Grayson when they clearly mean Dick Grayson, and not something else. Look at the DCComics.com Board, they censor "dick" and "Dick", thus causing all mentions of "Dick Grayson" to say "**** Grayson".

And then that makes it look like you're saying a certain F word to Grayson.
ComicBloc's forums really suck about that. You can't say damn over there. They want it to be all ages. Comics have not been all ages since 1980!

I'd say since earlier. Code approved comics had swear words in them since early seventies.
But yeah, it is pretty dumb to censor dick plural when dick single remains uncensored, regardless of names. I mean, we can talk about a dick but not more than one dick. Maybe it's because two dick(s) together will imply homosexuality.

True. Green Lantern/Green Arrow and Spider-Man were taking on drugs, racism, murder, rape, women's lib, etc. as early as 1970. Yet the ComicBloc boards won't let you say damn. What the hell?

Aside from not allowing you to swear, are ComicBloc's boards okay? I've never been there.

Well, it's kinda cool because a lot of comic creators like Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka, Moose Baumann, Ron Marz, Kurt Busiek, Marc Andreyko, Todd Nauck, Beau Smith, Don Kramer, Ethan Van Sciver, Rags Morales, Leonard Kirk, Jeffrey Neary, Steve Sadowski, Scott Kolins, Simone Bianchi, Gail Simone, Alberto Dose, Ken Lashley, Howard Porter, Mike McKone, John Watson, Liam Sharp, J Torres, etc. post there.
Then there's the problems...
1. Fanboyism. There's rampant fanboyism for creators, for characters, etc. You really have to weed through that to get to any interesting discussion.
2. The restrictions. Now heated disagreements are allowed, little criticism of creators, particularly ones that post there, are tolerated, criticism of companies, particularly DC since only DC creators really post there, is barely allowed, complaints over lateness or whatnot are not allowed, no insults of any kind are allowed, no swearing allowed, etc. It used to be great around there back in 2004 but then they started getting as bad as the Byrne board. If you have anything negative to say about Geoff Johns for instance, they'll either reprimand you, lock your topic, ban you (I was banned before for complaining about Geoff's constant lateness on Green Lantern), or, if the moderators allow what you're saying, the fanboys will rip you apart, going back to #1. There are a great deal of Geoff fanboys, for instance, who will tear you a new one for even questioning his greatness.
3. Preferences between old and new. In general, they don't like you to prefer the old to the new. People still do which is a problem in itself though. There are tons of arguments between people and insults flung around over which Green Lantern you prefer for instance. The moderators will usually handle it quickly but subtle jabs like posting "Hal Jordan" in a topic where it asks you which Green Lantern you wouldn't mind being killed for some reason are left alone, which creates more fighting. It's best to just say you love all Green Lanterns whether you do or not. This happens though with others too like which Blue Beetle is better, the new one or Ted.
4. The moderators. Disagree with them or say they're overstepping their bounds at all and you will be banned. I've been banned several times for that.
5. Bad topics. A great deal of the topics are either really dumb speculation ("I think *Insert character here* is going to die because..." usually with some really poorly thought out or just really stretching speculation), bad suggestions to creators ("BRING BACK *Insert random, old, obscure character here*!!!!"), irrelevant fellating of the creators ("Ron Marz is the greatest writer ever because of the latest issue of Ion!" with little discussion, just saying how great they are), or something else. You really have to dig to find a good discussion.
Personally, I only lurk because they've gone downhill in the last year or so. They were great in 2004 but now, they're not much better than the DC boards, just without the ability to argue and the creators actually posting.

Not sure. The mods are pretty incompetent really, for all their blustering.
