Okay all, I was thinking about the upcoming Batman Beyond live action movie and was going present a simple question about keeping it faithful to the cartoon or giving it a brand new spin, and your views on it. But with all this talk on these boards of WB making Batman Beyond fade (I see it as well), I think it could just have something to do with the live action movie.

So with this thread, I will pose two things, my original question and my little conspiracy theory of why WB seems to be fading the Batman Beyond cartoon and it possible links to the live action movie.

The Question: How many of you out there would like the upcoming Batman Beyond live action movie to be faithful to the cartoon (Bruce never setting out a legacy, Terry stealing the suit and everything), or crafting something completely new? (How simple was that??)

The Conspiracy Theory: Okay, as said in other threads, it seems that WB is trying to drop Batman Beyond. Why would this be save that the upcoming movie might not resemble the Batman Beyond we are used to and it would make sense that it wouldn’t.

Batman Beyond was aimed at kids from the very start (from a marketing standpoint, making Terry young and in high school, to the techno setting and flashy battles, to say nothing of the talks that Hasbro asked WB to do the whole thing to sell BB toys). Beyond live action is more a continuation of the movie series, which means it will be aimed at movie goers beyond us fans of the cartoon and comics, and I don’t think the movie-going public would embrace a movie that could easily turn into a Teen Exploitation in a Batsuit flick. How many people who liked the movie series (and only know the movie series) would care for the Teen angle that Batman Beyond presents? It would be a hit for kids and teens, but the movies always aimed for a broader audience. It will be a gamble I don’t think WB will take.

I think Beyond live action will be a lot darker because so many people hated the campiness of Batman and Robin; many cried to take it back to tone of the first movie. With that, I can’t see how WB can make the movie resembling the cartoon when both older gen and parents would only link the feature to it. How many parents would be offended by a darker Batman Beyond? Who can say since WB was afraid to even take the risk of finding out when they slashed ROTJ to such a degree.

The live action movie is not set to come out till 2002 or 2003 I read (I have no idea if this true or not), but that is plenty of time for the cartoon to fade from the greater public eye, despite the fact that CN has got the air rights, it would never match the viewer accessibility of basic TV.

My Answer: Well since Paul Dini is involved, whatever direction that is decided to be used will be the right one, I'm sure. If I had the moxy to write such powerfull stories (i.e. Batman) I'd want to blow all past mistakes out of the water. We have four movies experience, as well has almost 10 years animated experience, so only Satan himself could physically ruin this for us.

But what would I want? I'd want the movie to do what a fourth season of Batman Beyond would have done, all with Paul Dini at the helm, to fix past BB mistakes. Max's annoying/evil personality change, the heavy high school story settings, Terry's development. So basically, I say just take the show, and do all necessary transitions to go from TV to film, such as making sure the show's mistakes don't happen in the movie, and making the movie overall much darker.

Unless Dini has an epiphany or something and comes up with a different story he'd like to use, of course. But I think there's a lot to Terry's Batman origin if you look deep enough. I always thought it was cool how Bruce and Terry's strong relationship started way back on the same night he lost his father. It's like when he lost his father, he was given a new one to look up to.

The Conspiracy Theory: Of course it's obvious The WB doesn't like us or Batman Beyond. But that's why I've been bellowing to just give us our last Batman Beyond episode (and stop jerking us around like they did with out other shows) so we can be done with KidsWB!. Then maybe the ulcers will subside.

There's only so much I want to be forced to take from those at the WB who wear names identical to the words in Batman Beyond's title sequence. Greed, Apathy..... :p

Batman can appeal to any fan of movies and/or fiction. So bringing in this new Batman is a great oppertunity because we can do it right, introducing Terry to the entire public for the first time.

OH MY GOD! Are you actually proposing that WB is engaged in a deep, dark conspiracy to do something RIGHT AND GOOD AND DECENT?!!! :D

I want to hug you, Periphery. Whether you're right or not, this is certainly the most refreshing and ORIGINAL conspiracy theory I've ever seen on these boards.
