Why does it seem like cartoons always have nephews that look just like them. The only examples I can think of is Donald Duck and Popeye. I know there's others that I am just not thinking of right now.

Nephews and nieces were always given to characters so they could be parental figures, but minus the responsiblity of being an actual parent.

That and presumably to cash in on the success/popularity of the first characters to do this cliche, Donald and Huey, Dewey and Louie...
Still, makes one wonder what the never-seen-or-mentioned brother/sister of Bugs, Popeye, Slappy, etc. were like (or how they feel knowing their sibling's famous)...or why they seem like a bunch of deadbeats to dump their kids on their siblings in such high numbers. ;-)
At least today's "Shaggy and Scooby Doo Gets a Clue" had Shaggy specifically refer to his Uncle Albert as his "mother's brother" (with the help that they've actually shown Shaggy's mother in two seperate spinoffs)...

Scrooge has Huey, Dewey and Louie for grand-nephews and Daffy had a nephew in the short "A-Haunting we Will Go"

Should I mention Snively from SATAM? Granted he didn't look like his uncle but he's a nephew.

Scooby had his nephew, Scrappy-Doo (regardless of the fandom's feelings towards Scrappy).
In the comics Mickey Mouse had two nephews - Mortimer and Ferdie - and Minnie had at least one niece. All three can be seen in "Mickey's Christmas Carol" playing the part of the Cratchit children. I think its Ferdie that's credited as playing Tiny Tim.
Bugs Bunny had a nephew named Clyde. He looked like a miniature of Bugs, but he had blue eyes. The only short I remember Clyde being in was one where Bugs attempted to help him study for a history test. I think Clyde was also in a Looney Tunes Christmas special as well.
In addition to Huey, Dewey and Louie Scrooge also has Donald for a nephew.

If aunts/nieces count for this thread, Lois Lane in the Golden age comics of the 40's / early 50's had a niece named Susie Tompkins, who was a mischievous kid who told tall tales/fibs and got into trouble.
Patty and Selma Bouvier have Bart as a nephew.
Scrooge also has Gladstone Gander as an "honorary nephew" (Donald's cousin from his father's side, and thus no actual relation to Scrooge).
Dr. Marbles on "Cyberchase" has a nephew named "Sleight O'Hand", an illusionist (his sister must've married some cube-shaped person, given Sleight's appearance)...
Betty Rubble has a nephew named Marblehead.

Popeye had identical nephews, but the number varied from two, to three, and even four. When they spoke, it was one at a time as they finish a sentence. When it's 4, their names are Papeye, Peepeye, Pupeye, and Pipeye. :p
Also on X-Men: Evolution, Spyke was Storm's nephew as his mother passed the mutant gene to him even though she wasn't a mutant herself.

So far, the cartoons previously listed featured nephew and niece characters in supportive roles to the main character, and there are cartoons in which the nephew/niece are the main characters and their uncles/aunts are portrayed in secondary roles.
First, here's a list of cartoon nephews who resembles their relatives:
- Snarf's nephew Snarfer from 'Thundercats'
- Orco is Uncle Montorks' favorite (if not only) nephew in the Classic 'He-Man and the Master of the Universe' series.
- Clover was grounded by her mother after her bratty cousin, Norman, told his Aunt (Clover's Mom) that he was mistreated by his older cousin in 'Totally Spies.'
Now, onto the cartoon nephews and nieces who are either the main characters or don't look like their uncles or aunts at all.
- Peter Parker, the most famous cartoon nephew of them all from the various 'Spider-man' animated series.
- It's amazing how Penny can tolerate her uncle's foolhardy antics in the 'Inspector Gadget' cartoon series.
- 'James Bond Jr'. is the nephew of his famous uncle of the same name except for the 'Junior' part.

Few corrections:
Popeye's nephews are named: Peepeye, Pipeye, Pupeye, and Poopeye. (Can just imagine some scene on the playground where any one of these guys are trying to sound "tough" to the cool kids by telling them what their name is... ;-) ).
Woody Woodpecker's neice and nephew are named "Knothead" (the nephew) and "Splinter" (the niece).

Ben Grimm, the Thing- nephew to his often mentioned Aunt Petunia.
I know Porky had a nephew in some old Looney Tunes comics, but I really can't remember his name.
Keitaro Urashima, nephew to Aunt Haruka (Love Hina).
Also, Pan in DBGT is Goten's niece.
