After finishing Epilogue from the JLU DVD set I started thinking about the whole history of the DCAU. It's a pretty unprecedented history for animation. There was, what, four major series comprimising the DCAU, plus the four Batman DTVs and shows like Zeta, Static Shock, and others that have connections in one way or another. Setting aside issues of whether or not certains shows are in the DCAU continuity we can safely say that their existence was made possible because of a little old show we've come to lazily call BTAS. There have been show many people involved and so many stories told. The DCAU has even spawned new comic books with the unique characters they've introduced. There's even a fan filmed made about Terry McGinnis. These shows have sparked so much discussion that are so passionate that you'd almost think these characters were real life people and all this time we've been watch actual recorded events of actually people. There's has been such a long journey between BTAS to JLU.

So think of how great it would be if they were to created a documentary about the DCAU. How great would it be if they would actually take the time to really develop one that truly represents the significance of the DCAU. We've had great extras on each of the DVDs giving us a glimpse at what it took to create each individual series and season. But wouldn't it be great to watch a documentary that brought the whole journey together. Would it be great if they talk about starting BTAS then being ask to develop STAS which later led to bringing Batman, which later led to Batmand Beyond, which spawned Zeta and so on and so forth. I'd like to hear interviews from everyone involved and how it felt to come on a team with a new show after seeing how well the previous show had done. I'd like to hear from the creative minds of BTAS about their thoughts of the shows they've never went on to work with. I'd like to hear from each every voice actor that participated in the DCAU. I'd like to hear from from people who became fans of the show even if they never got involved. I'd like to hear from the people at Warner Bros. who worked with the creative minds. I'd like to hear from people at DC and there take of the the DCU being animated.

Like I said before, we've gotten great extras on the DVD but we know that in I think JL Season 2 we got to hear from some of the voice actors that worked on JL but obviously they weren't able to get the voices of all seven league members. What if they actually worked to get interviews with everyone. What if a release date was not set for this project right away so that time could be taken to get interviews with these people.

I know this may not be possible or at least not very probable, but don't you think it would be great. I'd buy a documentary like this, would any of you?

Are you kidding? I'd buy three. One to watch, one to give away, and one to eat and make its power my own.

I'd buy it.

If they made one, I would suggest...

My favorite things about the DVD commentaries is when the producers explained why they made certain choices with the story. Like on the recent BB: Season 2 DVD they talk about why they added in Max and why they added in more of Terry's high school into the episode plots. I like hearing about why story ideas where thrown in, which ideas were scratched, etc.

I'd love it if they made something like that. The subject matter's rich enough. If not that, a book would also be nice. I'd draft Jason Hall to write it ;)

Even though I basically like just B:TAS/TNBA and JL/JLU, I'd be all for a documentary on the DCAU. Whether DVD or some kind of big companion book, I'd definitely buy it. :)

I'd buy it for sure. The Batman:Animated book and Modern Masters shows that it can be done. But from what I've heard and noticed, WB tends to be pretty secretive and protective of its material. I don't blame them in the business sense. Maybe in 10 years or so, it'd fly with them.

I love behind the scenes stuff and I always watch special features. The DCAU defined alot of cartoon history, before BTAS cartoons were for children, no one took them seriously and the animation was terrible.
It has inspired so many people, thanks to Bruce Timm I am now interested in a career in animation and his art inspires me to draw.
I am dissapointed that there isn't a documentary already, the special features in the DVDs were awesome but a little rushed. I want something that goes more indepth.

I agree!!!

This is a fantastic idea nate3po:D!!! I would defenately want to see a doc on the DCAU and I would like to hear some unpublished info from the TNBA crew on why they decided to do Tim Drake as the second Robin and show us alot of never before published artwork from TNBA and DCAU. Totally awsome that would be!!!!

If b.t or any of the creaters of the DCAU should be reading this thread right now, all I ask is to take this idea into consideration. Even though you guys have ALOT to do as it is, still consider it.

I'd also like to see it done because it would inspire more Animators to push the bar like Timm and Co. did. Some of these youngsters don't know how to do cartoons.

Would love it. Something very welcome and deserved... too much so to ever expect. It would be nice wouldnt it to something extra special and fan-gazmic on the final set though.

I would love to buy a commentary boxset for every episode. The only problem is would it work? I mean when Timm and co. did the commentary for "Brave new metropolis" they were really bored halfway.A book might work a little better but I would love to see a dvd boxset.

If Bruce Timm seems to get bored after a few commentaries, they could easily fix that by mixing up the commentators for additional episodes. Imagine having a couple with just some of the voice cast talking about a particular challenging episode or something like that. I wish the B:TAS and JL DVDs had more commentaries.

The E! True Hollywood Story could be a good forum for it. Someone should start a petition.

It might be nice to see a 30 min. one done on one of the DVD's. It wouldn't be possible otherwise I thinks. It's just too time consuming to get people and art and stuff and I don't think WHV will release something like that unless it involves one character. The closest one might come to something like that is if there's a JL movie made. Then, the DCAU will more than likely get a mention.

Good idea though. I think a fan made version could conviince people. Hint. Hint.

A fanmade documentary might be interesting, but I'm really jonesing for an official one, haha.

You want something in regards to the history of Superman??

Or some type of patten like that?

Or some type of patten like that?Like that, I guess, but preferably not sticking religiously to whatever's the most current with the odd tangent on things no one remembers.

Thankfully, since the DCAU is in hibernation at the moment, marketing shouldn't be too bad an issue.

Well you mentioned the DVD extras feel rushed....but go back to Batman: The Animated Series Vol.1 on the Disc 2. Batman: The Legacy Continues is a great mini-documentary is fantastic, especially a great look back now that the rest of the shows are out.
