View Full Version : My Friend's Interview w/ Weird Al - Need Good Questions

Okay, this is purely a coincidence that I posted up about that bad interview and am not posting about a friend who's got a shot at interviewing him.
Not sure where she works, but for some magazine in LA. The usual guy who does the interviews is gonna be out of town, so the torch gets passed to her to interview a childhood legend of ours.
I'm pretty sure she's professional enough to come up with a bunch of good questions, but what questions would you like her to ask? If they're good and she hasn't thought of 'em already, she'll probably get an answer for ya.

Tell her to ask if he'll be in any more episodes of Billy and Mandy as Squid Hat.

I'm assuming asking what's in his CD player/Ipod/Turnable is standard fare at this point.
The question I would ask would be in regard to his parodies. I'm curious to know if it's become easier or more difficult to come up with song parodys in this day and age than it was in his 80's heyday.
And also, does he work with songs that he actually likes, or does he enjoy going after stuff that bugs him and is just asking for a good mocking? And if both, then which approach is more common?

It's pretty well known that Al has wanted to do a Prince parody for years but hasn't been able to get permission; she might ask if there were any parodies he really wanted to include on Straight Outta Lynwood but didn't because the artist wouldn't give permission. She could also ask if he's gotten any crap from James Blunt's record label over the free Internet release of "You're Pitiful."

I've got a good one....it's a little long, but hopefully it can be fit in.
Al's been around since the 80's and in that time, no other musical satirist has risen to popularity. What happens when Al retires? Who's going to parody the songs that will get popular after that point? I'm sure his music label will attempt to get a "Weird Harold" or something, but no one would ever accept a mere copycat of Al. Is the Weird Al phenomenon something that can only happen once?
And if so, will he be just as popular decades from now? It's doubtful, as many of the targets he spoofed will become forgotten. Today's "Ridin' Dirty" is tomorrow's "If You Knew Susie Like I Know Susie." I want to know if he's ever thought about this stuff and what his opinions are on it.

Ask him why his music video for White & Nerdy wasn't included on the album DVD with the animated music videos.

Because he shot the video after the album was already completed.

I've been listening to Bohemian Polka a whole lot lately and I want to know something.
Why did Al decide to use only one song for Bohemian Polka as opposed to the multi-song polkas he usually does?
I like Bohemian Polka. In fact, I find it to be one of his best polka tracks but I want to know what inspired this decision.

Song's renewed popularity at that time due to the scene in Wayne's World when they sing it in the car.
BTW please search the 'Ask Al' feature at his website, alot of these questions have already been answered.

The content in the video for "Close but no Cigar" is a bit racier than fans are used to coming from Al, what are his thoughts on this?

I don't hear Al swear in any of his songs, even at opportunities where he could. What is his opinion on that?

At the very end of "Don't download this song" when you crank it up as its fading out you can clearly hear him say "you cheap bastards"!

If you turn up the end of "Phony Calls" (during the fade out), you can clearly hear him say "But you're just a pain in the ass."
As for a question:
How exactly did the "Peter and the Wolf/Carnival of the Animals Part Two" album with Wendy Carlos come about, and what are his thoughts on the final product? I've always loved that album, but I find it odd that most people (Al included) act like it doesn't exist.
