Whenever I see some of batman's foes doing martial arts I think, "I thought for martial arts your mind had to be focuesd."

and when I see a smart villan I think, "They can't be that smart if they chose the path of evil."

that is all.

Luke, you do not know the POWER of the dark side....

"They can't be that smart if they chose the path of evil."

Intelligence has nothing to do with morals. I think the smarter you get, the more likely you are to turn to evil because you comprehend and understand both sides and are able to decide which benifits you the most. (If that made any sense...)

The Riddler is proabably smarter than Batman (or at least close), and he chose evil. It's just how you were raised and how you think, not how smart you are that determines who you are in the inside.

If he's so smart, why isn't he rich?

Knowledge is power. And power corrupts. When the intelligent go to the darker side, they do it as an easy way to get power. Yes, there are some that are naive and fall into it...but usually, if you are that smart, knowledgable, and have seen the light of day in the last, oh say, 5 years, you know exactly what you're doing.

If knowledge is power and power corrupts, does that mean I shouldn't do my homework because I'll become evil? :P

Yes that's exactly right. lol! Nooo! Going to school and getting smarter will help you intellectually defeat those like Edward Nigma who are incredibly intelligent yet evil.

LOL! Hehe, sorry, hardcore BTAS fan.....I laughed involuntarily. :)

Anyway! Unfortunately for us, your heart doesn't have to be pure for your mind to focus and master martial arts. The human mind is a very strong and powerfull thing, and with the right motivation and drive it can do anything.

The moves, techniques and everything else physically involved with the martial arts fall under this catagory of thinking. It's the master's drive and morals that don't matter, unfortunately, to the said hypothetical evil person. And that sucks because, unknown to most, the storys, history and people involved with martial arts' history is the main reason for studying.

Thank you! Man, everyone's been coming up with the best excuses not to do homework.

I agree. Intelligence isn't good or bad itself, and can be used for both purposes. Wisdom on the other hand is something different. ;)

Howdy,

To attempt to address the thread in another manner...

I studied martial arts for many years during and after college. While spiritual self-perfection is often a goal of the martial arts, the study of martial arts can (and. sadly, often does) occur without it. People can become truly adept in the techniques of the arts without understanding the spiritual aspects of them, or without appreciating the ramifications of one's training.

To pick a name at random, Steven Seagal is an absolutely marvelous technician in Aikido. I completely fail to see anything even vaguely resembling the spiritual aspects of the art in any of his movies (except maybe Fire Down Below, where he kicks butt for Greenpeace =8^), and I find it hard to believe that he could be spiritually enlightened and beat his wife at the same time. To pick a less controversial example, the instructor of the Cobra-Kai in the Karate Kid movies understands the techniques perfectly, but has no grasp whatsoever of the spiritual dimension of the arts.

Martial-arts training also does not necessarily entail intelligence, although the constant striving and effort required to truly master martial-arts does tend to attract particular kinds of people who are often called "intelligent" by our society.

I think there's a huge difference in 'choosing' evil, and being evil. Evil is a human idea, and for it to exist it needs good. However, with regards to Batman, no-one is totally pure evil, or pure good. They are human - an imperfect balance of each. One's moral stance on life could lead them to be construed as being evil, even if they do not deem themselves as being so. I was actually discussing this with a friend a few days ago, with regard to sadism. If someone doesn't choose something, is it their fault if they are what they are? If someone finds they derive pleasure from, say, hurting another, is it their fault? After all, they didn't choose to gain pleasure in such a manner - that's just the way they are. And, what is wrong? We are told that a lot of things are wrong in this world, but I tend to see things in the sense of the ends justifying the means. The bourgeoise hegemony enforces various beliefs upon us, that this is sexually deviant, that that is morally impure, but that's only someone's tainted point-of-view, and until one abstain's from beliefs forced upon them and listens to the messages that ebb from their being, they can never be truly happy or satisfied. Yin needs yang. Good needs evil. Right needs wrong. Innocence needs lust. It's all about context and points of view. I always find it amusing when people deprive themselves of what they desire most of all by condemning it. Although, that is the obvious, and natural thing for any one to do. One gains more out of freeing their mind and opening it up to angrogynous thought. :)
