Mario may hit the 100 game mark within the life-span of the Wii

I don't know if anyone's been keeping track of the Mario and co. related spin-off games and such but the number itself is getting very very very very upthere. The majority of the games are the Mario Spin-offs however with only a handful of mainline Mario platformers, but it's currently a very big number, I think it's around 70-80 games at the current count.

More or less Mario was featured as a playable character in SSB, it's kinda iffy

but it's also interesting that characters like Pac-Man don't have even close to the same number of games as mario

Not really. Mario is one of the most highly marketable mascots out there. It's been said that he's more recognizable worldwide than Mickey Mouse (though I find that claim dubious). Naturally, he's going to be ridiculously overused.

Going by that Wikipedia entry, if you only count games in which Mario is a playable character and discounting ports (such as the Super Mario Advance series), the count only stands at around 50-60 depending on how inclusive you want to be.

Still a whole lot of games.

I think the spinoff games are some of the best games in the Mario series! A family (friends) can only truly bond when screaming obscenities at the computer player! :) (Mario Party, Kart, etc, etc).
