View Full Version : Toon Zone Talkback - Disney's Little Mermaid "Most Well-Known Redhead"; Promotes Ocean Awareness
This is the talkback thread for Disney's Little Mermaid "Most Well-Known Redhead"; Promotes Ocean Awareness (http://news.toonzone.net/article.php?ID=12685).
Wow. Looking at that splash image reminds me how ridiculously tiny her waist was. As Disney chicks go, Esmerelda was much sexier.

So Ariel's Doing PSA's now.. my comment is this.. Some Disney Characters already have been doing commentary for different PSA's..
I mean Take a Look at Cinderella, promoting Child Safety Seat Awareness.
Or Penny Proud (Of The Proud Family) or Kim Possible Promoting things Like Reading Awareness or YMCA Youth Activities.
I have to say this: Is Disney Slowly turning their Characters/Properties, into characters that deal with Public Service Announcements (PSA's)?
Oh and Ben, what's next? Belle doing a PSA for Reading Awareness? Simba Doing a PSA for Wildlife Preservation?
It really makes you wonder if Disney is going to turn a vast majority of their Characters into some sort of PSA "Poster Children"...
Just my thoughts though...

People are always using cartoons for these kinds of things.

You mean Nani. Now she had some junk in her trunk.

Simba Doing a PSA for Wildlife Preservation?
I think that Timon & Pumbaa were doing that at one point.

Cartoon characters are used for all kinds of PSA or advertising. Heck, you got Snoopy dancing it up on life insurance ads. Disney doing this for some of their popular properties isn't much of a surprise.
What is a surprise is Ariel being the most recognized red-head. Certainly wouldn't be the first thing to pop into my mind.

I've seen Bambi ones as well. Really, these PSAs seem to be timed just when the movie's on DVD.

Ariel should be a spokesperson for the "Good God, Give This Girl a Sandwich!" foundation.

Well, she is a mermaid, mermaids may not require as much food as humans...and if they do, the food underwater probably isn't very fattening. :p

Well, they did show a fat mermaid in part of the movie. Dunno how real she was, being part of Ursula's pitch and all.
But in any case, a girl that can slip in and out of a ship's porthole is scary thin.

Considering that every fish in the sea is either a close personal friend of Ariel's or higher up on the food chain than she is (the sharks), she probably subsists on a diet of seaweed, which is naturally low in both carbs and transfats.
Reality Check: I'm pretty sure this "survey" is bogus, possibly dreamed up by Disney to coincide with the Little Mermaid Special Edition DVD release. I used three different search engines to try to find the survey results (I wanted to see where Lucille Ball, Shirley Manson, and Ann-Margaret ranked) and learned the following:
--most news services and agencies that mention this are either printing the press release verbatim (including Toon Zone) or commenting on the press release, which is quoted extensively.
--"Omnibus Operations" apparently doesn't exist. The press release is the only place on the World Wide Web that mentions it.
--The survey list has not been published anywhere, and the ranking of the other redheads mentioned in the press release are not mentioned anywhere.

I just wanted to note that Toon Zone News did both.

For the record, I did try to find a copy of the survey, if nothing else because the press release (from Disney) is pretty thin on details (and also seems to be missing Reba MacEntire). There is an Ipsos North America (http://www.ipsos-na.com/) that does market research and opinion polling, but I can't find anything on the site about the Little Mermaid. Due to a bunch of things, I never really got much further with the investigation.
So, at the moment, the press release is the only thing we have to go on, and it contains nothing about methodology, the questions that were asked, margins of error, or anything else you'd expect from a more reputable poll. The results would have to be interpreted radically differently if the methodology was, "Name the most famous redheads you can think of" and Ariel was named most often or if it was a multiple-choice quiz and Ariel was the top pick of the choices offered.
Even so, I'm pretty sure that most of the redheads named in the article would still rank above Lucille Ball and maybe even Ann-Margaret, unless the survey happened to skew to a significantly older audience.

Well actually, that Circle Of Life movie with Timon, Pumba, and Simba at Epcot is pretty much just a PSA about respecting the Environment:

Cartoons have a long history of starring in PSAs, which did not always suck. See Disney's wartime toons. (http://www.amazon.com/Walt-Disney-Treasures-Front-Lines/dp/B0000BWVAH/)

Bingo! Disney is exceedingly clever about these things.

Yeah, it's called Circle of Life and it can be seen in Epcot as an attraction :D
Edit: I got beaten to the joke, 8 days ago. Very embarasssing.
