View Full Version : John Delaney's Sketch of the Week #4
Harley
01-21-2002, 04:57 PM
Welcome to "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"! Out of the kindness of his art, John Delaney is doing something big for the fans - an exclusive weekly Toon Zone sketch! Every week, John Delaney will draw up a new picture based on the results of the poll above. That means that *we* fans choose what the picture will be! The contest will begin every Monday, and end at 5pm the following Friday, giving fans a solid five days to choose. You can only vote ONCE ! Delaney will then draw the sketch over the weekend and we'll present at the beginning of the following week. The characters must be DC characters drawn in the Animated style, and if you have any requests for future polls, send me an email with your ideas! Sound good? You can also post your thoughts on the poll in this thread.
So...let the voting begin on "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!
P.S. Keep on sending those requests in!!!

That's a nice lineup, very different from the previous polls. I have one question though, isn't it only suppose to be DC Animated Characters? I'm not complaining, I think it's nice that there are Marvel characters too, but just wondering since you said that it would only have to be DC Animated Characters. Anyway, I voted for Good ol' Cap. If Cap wins, I hope Delaney does a little bit of a tribute to the 9-11 tragedy, maybe the WTC in the backround with Cap with his shield standing in a pose like an American Hero in the foreground. (hint hint) :D

well, there are those of us who dislike the Man of Steel...but I don't think that's why Batman isn't on..
the only High profile heros on this list are both 1st time Marvel characters....I think they're trying to rotate in new faces, and rare oldies...

Like why are Marvel characters even allowed? I would rather see the Green Lantern than Spiderman. I don't think they belong here. If you don't vote Ivy, at least vote Darksied or Alfred.
I also wanted to add to the Spiderman fan. Everyone has their own style and I want to see him do Ivy. Ivy you know someone who is actually DC.

The reason why characters like Spider-Man and Captain America are in the poll now becuase we decided to let this expand past the DC Animated universe and include Marvel Characters as well, so we'll have both Marvel and DC Characters to choose from. It'll definatly make results more interesting, I think. And we won't be focusing on Batman and Superman and JL related characters all the time, since we've already seen them in animated form. We'll be expanding past that to make Joun's work even more of as treat. There are alot of characters outside the BTAS/BTAS/BB/JL universe that I can't wait to see in the animated style.

Wow, John! Great Catwoman sketch. I like the frowning expression, too. It's a little less generic than the usual Bruce Timm grin. And the JL highlights are very nicely done, as well. Although similar, this design is much better than the TNBA Catwoman design, IMHO.
I love getting 2 for the price of 1!

Thanks for the warm welcome. Believe me, I've spent lots of time viewing this site for the last few months, just finally got involved myself. I have the 1st Batman sketch as my wallpaper right now-

Actually, I voted for Spiderman. I just wanted to use that joke. :) Ivy would be my second choice.
All the comics I subscribe to (not counting the Animated ones) have that Bat-family icon on them, but I really like that this poll opened to include characters outside the DCU. My thanks and congrats to everyone who put this together.

I'm very impressed and greatful for the PURRRRRFECT Catwoman piece! Not only did you give her a B: TAS fluidity and a TNBA mask, but her stance and highlights look very reminiscent of that proposed Catwoman spinn-off that we read about in Batman:Animated!!! I'm so thrilled, thanks so much!!! This is great!!!

Hey DB
Although I have Batman Animated, I didn't refer to it for the Catwoman drawing I was just trying to get the best elements from each series. The more curvacious body fom BTAS the black costume and mask fom TNBA and the highlights from JL
Glad you liked it!

Well only 10 minutes left and Poison Ivy leads by only 1 vote! What will happen if there's a tie? Will there have to be a recount in Florida? What about all those pregnant chads? Tune in at 5pm EST to see what happens!

Poison Ivy winning by 1 vote and me with my vote left. This is why it's good to wait till the end.

3 minutes to go..and we have a tie...AHHH!!! The suspense!

Screw this whole alphabetical order nonsense. In case of a tie, the winner should be whoever would win in a fight.

That would be Spider Man!
HEY! You voted for Ivy! She's alphabetical...
Matt Hazuda
01-25-2002, 05:02 PM
Well it's after 5 and we have a tie! The polls are closed folks nothing to see here. Go on, get out!
James Harvey
01-25-2002, 05:03 PM
The poll is closed...with a tie. So - how do we decide this? Well - there's three options:
1) The winner is the character who comes first in alphabetical order.
2) Both characters are sketched
3) Or John chooses his favorite out of the two characters and sketches that one.
Looks like we'll have to wait and see.

Ahhhh!!!!! Not a cliffhanger! I guess that means that Poison Ivy wins by default! Yah!
Terminatah
01-25-2002, 05:05 PM
I don't even want Poison Ivy to win, go Spider-Man.
Kalibak: "Father, I received no votes."
Darkseid: "You're a bad son."
-Terminatah
Mr. Obsession
01-25-2002, 05:05 PM
Well, in the even of a tie John Delaney could just draw the two of them fighting and not have an obvious winner. Plus a sketch like that would give use something fun to debate. :)
King Ryan7708
01-25-2002, 05:06 PM
Id say do choice two, then everyone is happy!
edit-gah! I misspelled two! How stupid am I!
James Harvey

Looks like we'll have to wait and see what John says. I wonder if he knew what he was getting into when he decided to do this....:)
The Dark Knight
01-25-2002, 05:09 PM
Choosing alphabetically seems just silly, and I think it’s unfair to ask John to draw two sketches, so I would say to leave it up to John himself.

As much as I'm tempted to, we can't. You've already placed the vote and it can't be changed. It's only fair. Well - this is definatly going to be interesting to see what results...

I agree. Let John decide.

Or we could let John draw the third place winner and let Spidy and Ivy fight it out again next week.

If I was John Delaney, I would draw Spider-Man disguised as Poison Ivy.

That's... just... wrong...
Randy H
01-25-2002, 05:20 PM
I'd prefer that John draw the fourth place winner. Drawing the third place winner is just too passe.... ;) And it doesn't hurt that the fourth place winner is the guy I voted for.....
Here's hoping for a truly tight race next week.....

Well if drawing the third place winner is "too passe" why don't we just have John draw Jimmy Olsen vs. Kalibak! :wakko:

Oh, i'm too late! I was going to pick Spiderman, which would have broken the tie. Drat! Too bad i didn't come here first. :( Sorry everybody.

While we could have used the vote, never fear optimal321. There's always next week.
Glad you liked my idea naraht. I can just see what would happen if that pic got posted -
Me: Well, there's Kalibak. But why is he standing in a puddle?
John: That's Jimmy. :D

Speaking of Orion........ wouldn't HE be nice to see in a poll?
And yes, I've emailed the suggestion to Harley....... :)

Randy H I understood that. At any rate, having not read SA #28 I'd be kind of interested in seeing that sketch. Well, you probably know how I picture that fight turning out. :bosko:
Let me guess, in SA #28, Jimmy won.
Randy H
01-25-2002, 05:53 PM
What? You thought Kalibak was bigger? You thought Kalibak was stronger? Ha! The lens is mightier than the sword, my friend! And the flash bulb is even more powerful!
Well, if they did fight, Jimmy'd win! Maybe... not...

Just to be clear, Jimmy actually didn't beat Kalibak in SA#28. He was captured by him, but in the end, he was set free by Darkseid....

Just a suggestion, but maybe we can have a poll agaisnt Spiderman and Ivy. Just them two. If not, then Mr. Delaney can just pick which one he rather does.

That sounds like a good idea. We already did get a fourth sketch - Catwoman. We could have a Spidey versus Ivy poll for next week.
However, I think we should leave it up to Mr. Delaney to see what he decides.
Mr. Obsession
01-25-2002, 07:32 PM
I don't think it's a good idea to have the next poll dedicated to a face off between Spiderman and Poison Ivy.
John should just choose the winner and the looser gets to fight it out in the next poll.
Or alternatively instead of doing either Spidy or Ivy he could do the
do a match-up of one of the other ties. Either Jimmy Olsen vs. Kalibak or Alfred vs. Hal Jordan. :bosko:
Bruce Wayne

No no, I'm not saying have a poll for next week. I'm just saying have like a 24/48 hour poll and who ever wins, gets sketched. But I think its up to the great artist to choose a plan.

How about the two together?
Poison Carley

Ivy won. Ivy is a DC character. Ivy has a reason to be here and Ivy won. Ivy is better and thats who won. Case closed your winner is Poison Ivy.
Bruce Wayne
01-25-2002, 10:22 PM
Carley, keep in mind that a tie is a tie. I know you love Ivy so much, but think of it, its a tie. I love spidey as much as you love Ivy, but I'm not being on one side. Hell, I'd love to see Ivy too.. blah.. lets hope this gets setteled in a fair way.

Uhh... A tie is a tie Carley. Let's just let John decide.
Of course he could just sidestep the entire issue by doing a Jimmy Olsen vs. Kalibak sketch! Come on John, you know you want to! Listen to the voices in your head which tell, no demand you do it! :D

Hey Kats
A tie is a tie! I just finished drawing both Poison Ivy and Spiderman. We'll post them both, otherwise it's too much of a forgone conclusion next week. Let's keep it fresh, besides they both were tons O' fun to draw

Darkseid: "Where'd you get those scars?"
Kalibak: "From my job."
Darkseid: "Don't lie to me. I saw you with him."
Kalibak: "You were watching me?"
Darkseid: "What did he make you do?"

Kalibak: "Jesus, what is it with you--"
Darkseid: "I swear to the High Father, I will throw you out of Apokolips and never look at you again."
Kalibak: "You mean that."
Darkseid: "Damn straight I do. I'd rather you were dead than be a failed villain."
Kalibak: "You're right. I lose fights with superheroes."
