Who else likes ash and why?
who hates ash and why?

I personally think the writers took a really good chaicter and butchred him up. I mean, he's really stong, smart and clever, but most of the time he acts stupid and weak. and he has a puny voice.

For a moment I thought this thread was about Ash from the Evil Dead series (love that guy) :)

Ash from Pokemon is written so unevenly most of the time it's not even funny. He'll be a bonehead some times then turn into the most competent Pokemon trainer ever to grace the game.

I'm sick of this "schizoid" stuff!

When I actually watched the show (I stopped sometime before "Johto Journeys"), I thought Ash had one good line: "If anybody's out there, you can come out. And if you're a monster or a ghost, you can stay where you are."

The rest of the time he annoyed me. But, I have to agree that the writing made it seem like there was some kind of split personality thing going on.

that's the american version conflicting with the true anime.

sooooooo...in Japan he isn't a good trainer? =]

I say if the series ended a lot sooner, the answer to the question would be obvious. Personally, there really is not much to compare Ash to, primarily since they don't give him much time to battle in the anime. But I say that outside a few times of brilliance, Ash pretty much relies on luck to drive him through. I mean, he has to have luck on his side if he keeps finding every single problem out there in the Pokemon world, thus leading to the ad infitnitum reruns.

overall, he's a terrible trainer. half of his badge collection was "earned" by beating the less than worthy team rocket. he's just not very bright. if brock and misty were never there, ash would have died in viridian and pikachu would've eaten his corpse.

He is bright, but only when the situation demands it. I can prove it if you want me to.

Ok, in Japan... For starters, his voice stays pretty much the same throughout. Personality-wise, he's your average shouen/shojo leading character: Determined and reliable when the time calls for it.... Completely lacking common sense the rest of the time. But the fact is, "Ash" isn't half bad at training Pokemon, he treats them well and is willing to let them go if they want it.

RE: Evil Dead Ash... Maybe that's his dad.... :P

--pause to consider it, most heroes of anime are sweetly naive--Tenchi Mysake, for example, has the personality of a wet teabag, yet about half a dozen women are fighting to bed him. The lasses are much the same--cf. Serena/Sailor Moon, a clumsy, babbling naive brat you'd never expect to be a modern day amazon. Even (early) Bruce Wayne is rather like this--the boyfaced billionare you'd never guess in a million years was Batman--which demonstrates the definite influence of Japan on mainstream American animation.

Not if Ash keeps lopping off his girlfriends heads..or letting them get possesed...or leaving them in the past..or...yeah...the point is, while Ash may get some Sugar, I dont think he'd have a kid yet. Especially not some annoying dork like Ash Ketchum. Geeze.

Even though...Sam Raimi's original character of Ash(Evil Dead), was just supposed to be a Lucky Idiot. hehe...
