Clark (Tom Welling) works hard to clean up the destruction done by Zod and develops what he thinks is his first cold. However, he soon discovers it is a new power – super breath! Lois (Erica Durance) lands a job at The Inquisitor, the local tabloid, and Lana (Kristin Kreuk) moves in with Lex (Michael Rosenbaum, who believes someone is following him, which quickly proves to be true after he is kidnapped.
Allison Mack, John Glover and Annette O’Toole also star. Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer wrote the episode directed by Paul Shapiro.

This was a very lackluster episode in my opinion. It played out like a standard "main character is kidnapped and has to be saved at the last minute" fair. Along with that, there are some things that are starting to bug me about the show.
1. So it apparently hasn't been too long since the so called "Dark Thursday" incident and Lana, after getting an iron rod jammed straight through her hand, she is down to only a double sided bandage on her hand. But she apparently has enough feeling and movement in her hand to hold a gun. Yeah, sure.
2. Lana is such an unlikeable ***** now. I hate to say it that way, as I've tried to see her side of things, constantly being lied to, but damn. No wonder so many in the Smallville fandom want her to either die or just go away.
3. Clark comes down with a cold but we, the audience, never get an explanation as to how. What's worse is that neither he nor Martha were too worried about it. The last time he fell ill it was because he inhaled Kryptonite dust, so it's surprising that neither one even thought to check on that angle.
4. Clark is still way too sloppy with his powers. Even with a bajillion cameras in Luthor mansion he still runs out of it at super speed. That along with the fact that he just tries to rip walls off and blew the wall down in that PI's office would be more than enough for people to ask more than a few questions as to how it happens, even for that weird town.
5. Lois is starting to become the Lois of the comics, a reporter, which means Chloe's time is just about up. Pisses me off to no end.
6. How many times is Lex going to get shot? I mean really, between him getting shot and Lana getting knocked out, those two should just live in the hospital.
About the only good thing about the episode was Oliver Queen/Green Arrow's conversations with Lionel. Plus, they let us see just how good of a marksman he is.
So after a pretty good season premiere last week, the producers churn out dreck like this. Sigh. I should have watched the Office and Earl. I probably will next week and record Smallville to watch another time.

For the last five years, I've been bothered by the fact that Lex doesn't have cameras around the mansion. Seemed rather convenient for Clark. Now we find out that he does have them, which just bothers me more. I mean, how many times has Clark used his powers there? Surely enough to have been found out...
Also, you'd think someone would have mentioned Oliver's recent stay on a deserted island. Sure, they could have changed his origin for Smallville, but they already had a newspaper headline starting that story. If they don't follow through with it, I will be upset, but not surprised.

Whenever she complains, it always comes off as "It's all about me! No secrets from me, kneel before Lana!" She ceased being relevant a long time ago, so the writers have to shoehorn in things so that she actually has a purpose in the story. Unfortunately, since they don't have many of those tricks, she fills the rest of the time with her "all about me" in the hopes of trying to look like she's important.

Somehow, they probably don't think that major plotlines should be beholden to throw-away easter eggs made years ago.

amusing ep... carries the tradition of the fun "new power discovery" episodes, including "Heat." In terms of the lack of explanation of his cold... I just figured it was just a growth thing. I mean, the way he pined for Lana in the past, I'm surprised he didn't develop his heat vision at the age of 10. Then of course was his x-ray vision: just random headaches... the same thing applies here: just a run-of-the-mill, random cold :)
nice to see Oliver Queen on the show... can't wait to see his development, and the upcoming "Young Justice League" ep.
good stuff :D

I liked the sneezing/Lois subplot, but everything else we've seen before and seen done better.
Lana's hand healing at Wolverine speeds was nothing (maybe they should have examined her, huh?) The promo for next week mentions that Green Arrow is a billionaire CEO. THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A CEO THAT YOUNG. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO GET THAT HIGH IN THAT SHORT A LENGTH OF TIME. COME ON.

Unless the owners of Queen Industries (prob his parents) made Oli the CEO.
Lex is CEO of LuthorCorp, why cant Oliver be CEO? They're about the same age.

I thought Lionel was CEO.

My memory isn't that good but I think Lex became CEO either after Lionel became blind or when he became possed by Jor-El/Kryptonian tech.
The only good thing about this episode was Lois subplot and Oliver introduction. From the look of the preview we finally gonna get someone in super hero costume(it about time).

It just really kills me that the show can't use Batman in any of the episodes. That would be fantastic and really give "Smallville" and much-needed kick start. But, yeah, the episode was "eh" and, worse, I forgot to DVR "My Name is Earl." D'oh!

5. Lois is starting to become the Lois of the comics, a reporter, which means Chloe's time is just about up. Pisses me off to no end.
Not necessarily. Chloe knows Clark's secret and as far as this show is concerned, Lois never will, so Chloe still plays an important role as Clark's sidekick, of sorts, and non-parent confidant.
Only caught the last few minutes of this one, but is anyone on the show still bothering with college?
I think this episode is supposed to take place over the summer.
Smallville's been around for a while, and although it has a tendency to spin its wheels, I'm still enjoying it. I like the Clark/Chloe stuff, and we can still see Clark develop new powers and feel more responsible about big disaster-type stuff.
Really, the only thing that doesn't work is Lana because she's so annoying (and aparently more of a pervert than she thought Lex was considering she watched herself get undressed like 3 times). I hope her role is kept to a minimum this season, but I know that's just wishful thinking.
Ah, Green Arrow. A little too soon for me to judge, but it's cool he has a past with Lex. I was kind of surprised they showed he was THAT good an archer and next episode we see him in (two?!) costumes, but I'll have to wait and see how that plays out. Maybe dealing with the Luthors is what turns Ollie into an anti-corporate left wing for-the-people kind of guy.

So Green Arrow was indeed the one who wanted to find out how Lex had those powers, but now they know someone else has them (though they don't know it's Clark yet). This episode was good since it does get Lois startting into journalism, though she does seem to have some grammatical mistakes, but it doesn't eliminate what they can d with Chloe. I still feel they need to do a Chloe/ Pete episode where the two discuss Clark.
As for Clark's new power, it's not that it's new, it's how he discovered it. I thought it was kind of weak, but I was laughing at the end when he blew the storm away. I guess that'll teach mother Nature to mess with Clark.

No, apparently the school got damaged enough during the Dark that it's closed till next semester, at least (Lana's words). Gotta say, pretty sceptical about that piece of flimsy writing.
It's nice that Clark's running around trying to clean up the mess, but I'm getting tired of waiting for him to do such things on his own. Guilt's the motivation right now.

Another episode that i thought was very strong and a great follow up to the season opener. Everyone is usually complaining that things are back to normal in the second episode and everything that happened in the clifhanger is ingnored and we finally have a second episode dealing with the repricussions of last years season finale and noneone cares. After 5 seasons its hard to stay fresh and i think the show is doing an excelent job. The only thing that bothers me is how Lionel changes from evil to good to "do we really trust him?" without an explanation. I'm hoping that eventually gets cleared up. It seems he always has some motive the audience never gets let in on. All in all i think this season is off to a great start and am hoping its better than season 4 or 5.
I liked the episode, even though the whole a "Luthor gets Kidnapped" angle has been played to death.
Good to see "Zod" wasn't ignored like most story arcs. The show barely mentions any of the other season finales in their following seasons besides the first episode wrap up.
Lana has been so annoying since Season 3, I dont know why the writers still have her fed down our throats. It's really the thing that drags the show down the most.

The thing is, in this continuity, it probably wasn't all that recent. The newspaper headline was from just around the time of the original meteor storm. Then, in this episode, we see Lionel looking at a picture of Ollie and his parents when he was very young standing near a Queen Enterprises yacht. I'm thinking that in this version, Ollie crashed on that island as a little boy with his parents and grew up there for a reasonable period of time. Maybe Ollie's parents even died there. Who knows?

When Lionel went to jail in season four, thats when Lex became the CEO of Luthor Corp. He still is. He just allows Lionel to work there now for his experiance. (That was explaned in the last season's saw rip off.)

I have my fingers crossed for a decent time commenting on this week's episode. A character getting kidnapped is rather passe at this point so that didn't really do it for me...
The only part I really liked was the start of Justin Hartley as Oliver Queen. I haven't seen the Aquaman pilot, but I really liked Hartley from my infrequent viewing of Passions. It was awesome finding out that he was the one pulling all the strings. The arrow shot on the Daily Planet globe was a great visual.

The last time he fell ill it was because he inhaled Kryptonite dust, so it's surprising that neither one even thought to check on that angle. He didn't have a cold, it was the development of the 'super' breath. Clark and Martha only thought he had a cold. Their reaction to it didn't really bother me, while it's weird for him to have a cold, it's not like he was deathly ill.

This was also the first "new power" episode where Chloe helped him figure out how to use it. Those were fun scenes to watch. Nice to see them finally relaxing at the end (with the lake trip), and it was interesting that nobody else was mentioned as going until they invited Lois. If she hadn't been there, would they have gone by themselves? :D
